EDMONTON -- Two medal sweeps in the women's long jump and discus increased Team USA's medal tally to 23 after Saturday's morning session of the Pan American Junior Championships at Foote Field.
Samiyah Samuels (Houston, Texas) and Courtney Corrin (Playa Vista, California) took gold and silver in the women's long jump, the fourth medal sweep in an event by Team USA. The jumpers completed one round before having to leave the facility for a weather delay. Samuels came back to jump 6.23m/20-5.25 in round four to take the lead for good. Corrin had two fouls to open before a 6.13m/20-1.5 in the fifth round put her in silver medal position.
Heading into the fifth round of the women's discus, Josie Natrasevchi (Fort Collins, Colorado) was in second behind Shanice Love of Jamaica. Natrasevchi unleashed a 52.60m/172-7 throw that put her in first and would be enough for gold, and Lloydricia Cameron followed up in the final round with a 51.98m/170-6 effort that vaulted her above Love on the podium into silver medal position.
Competing in the first event of day two, Anali Cisneros (Elgin, Illinois) was sixth in the women's 10,000m racewalk in 52:03.26, two spots ahead of teammate Katie Michta (Nesconset, New York), who finished eighth in 52:45.96.
After lengthy delays due to lightning in the area, the men's 110m hurdles saw both Team USA runners advance to the final by finishing second in their heats. Misana Viltz (Long Beach, California) was outleaned in the second heat in 13.55, while Marquis Morris (Pittsburgh, California) finished in 13.76 in the first heat.
Carlton Orange (Memphis, Tennessee) took over the lead midway through the first heat of the men's 800m and went on to win in 1:50.65. He will be joined in the final by Robert Ford (San Antonio, Texas), who ran 1:50.42 to take fourth in the second heat and advance as a time qualifier.
Running into a 1.5 meters per second wind, Deanna Hill (Orlando, Florida) won the first heat of the women's 200 in 23.83. Caitland Smith (Pelham, Alabama) ran 24.21 for fourth in the second heat and did not move on as she was 10th overall.
Ryan Clark (College Park, Georgia) made up the stagger on the field by the middle of the curve and sprinted on to win the second heat of the men's 200m in 20.91.
From lane seven in the third heat, Noah Lyles (Alexandria, Virginia) was also an easy winner in 20.96.
Taking the lead at the sixth barrier in the third men's 400m hurdles heat, Kenny Selmon (Mableton, Georgia) was a convincing winner in 51.67. World Youth champion Norman Grimes (Canyon, Texas) also advanced to the final with a 51.24 to take second in the first heat.
