The Warm-Up Lap: News and Notes (Feb. 28)

February 28

NEW ORLEANS – Conference championships are largely now in the books and NCAA Championships weekend awaits next weekend, but in the meantime a significant number of student-athletes in Divisions I and III will be striving for one last chance to post an NCAA qualifying mark.

A dozen or so schools around the country will be hosting "final qualifier" or "last chance" meets to give student-athletes a final opportunity to qualify for or strengthen their position for the NCAA Championships. The qualifying window for both the DI and DIII Indoor Championships close Saturday.

In Division I this weekend takes on an entirely different meaning than in years past due to new changes to the qualifying procedures to the meet. While in the past automatic and provisional qualifying marks were used to select championships fields, all guidelines have been removed this season – leaving just the top 16 performers in individual events and the top 12 relay teams eligible for championships competition in Fayetteville, Ark. No more, no fewer.

DIII uses a similar system in which only a select number of individuals and relay teams qualify to compete at the DIII Championships in Naperville, Ill. The standards are a bit stricter, as individual men’s events will be contested by fields of 13, and women’s individual events will have 15. Relay events for both genders will feature 10 teams.

Meanwhile in Division II the qualifying window for NCAA Championships has closed and the qualifiers have been announced. Two-time defending champion No. 2 Grand Valley State leads all women’s teams with 23 entries to the meet, while No. 3 Saint Augustine’s secured the most men’s entries with 18. Updated National Team Computer Rankings based on NCAA qualifiers will be released Monday.

The first "last chance " day for those DI and DIII student-athletes jockeying for championship qualification positioning will be Friday with eight meets around the nation either beginning or taking place. Division I schools hosting one-day final qualifiers Friday include Arkansas, LSU, Northern Iowa, and Wisconsin, while Columbia and Notre Dame begin two-day competitions. Division III Carthage will host a one-day Friday meet, and DII Tiffin kicks off a two-day meet Friday.

Those athletes competing Friday will 1.) hope they post a strong enough mark to secure a qualifying spot and 2.) hope they can keep it after the second last-chance day on Saturday.

In addition to those two-day meets concluding Saturday, Iowa State, Virginia Tech and Washington will play host to final qualifiers. UW-Stevens Point will be the lone DIII institution hosting a one-day Saturday final qualifier.

A pair of DIII conference championship meets – the MIAC and the NCAC – will also take place this weekend.

Should any student-athletes be tied at the outer edge of the fixed fields, tie-breakers are in place to determine which will compete at the Indoor Championships. If two or more student-athletes’ best marks are tied, the tie will be broken by the best second-best qualifying mark, and then the third-best and so on should ties still exist. However unlikely it may be for most events, should the progression of qualifying marks from best to worst for the student-athletes in question be identical, the process will repeat taking into account the date each time/mark was recorded, with preference given to those set closer to the indoor championships. A coin toss will be the final determination should the student-athletes in question still be tied after the lengthy tie-break process.

March Bowerman Women's Watch List Released

February 28, 2013

NEW ORLEANS – Three newcomers join a star-studded group of collegiate track & field student-athletes on the March edition of the women’s The Bowerman Watch List released Thursday by the Bowerman Watch List Committee.

Arkansas’ Regina George, Betsy Saina of Iowa State and Aurieyall Scott of UCF join the Watch List this week, marking each member of the trio’s first career apperance.

Far from new to the Watch List are reigning The Bowerman winner Kimberlyn Duncan of LSU and 2012 The Bowerman finalist Brigetta Barrett of Arizona. Duncan makes her 15th career appearance, tied for second-most all-time with Arkansas’ Tina Sutej and Florida State’s Kim Williams, while Barrett appears for the 13th time, fifth all-time.

The Watch Listers had quite the conference championship weekend, combining for a total haul of 17 individual/relay conference championships, and Watch Listers account for the collegiate lead in 10 events after the weekend. Makeba Alcide of Arkansas had the best weekend of them all, winning the SEC indoor pentathlon title with a collegiate record 4,569 points.

The pool of exceptional student-athletes from which Watch List selections are drawn is deep, as demonstrated by the fact that three of the "Also Receiving Mention" honorees combine for the collegiate lead in four events.

Listed below are brief synopses the Watch List selections’ credentials to this point in the indoor season.

MAKEBA ALCIDE, ARKANSAS
This Season: Won the SEC Championships indoor pentathlon with a collegiate-record 4,569 points, giving her two of the top seven scores in collegiate history. Her record surpassed Oregon’s two-time NCAA indoor pentathlon champion and 2012 Bowerman Finalist Brianne Theisen’s previous record of 4,555 set last season. Set career bests in three of the five components (20-2 (6.15m) in the long jump; 8.35 in the 60 hurdles; 2:16.37 in the 800) and an indoor PR in the shot put at 40-5 (12.32m). Earlier this season recorded the seventh-best pentathlon score in collegiate history with a 4,464 at the Razorback Invitational. Leads all collegians in the pentathlon by more than 350 points. Ranked fourth in DI in the open high jump with a mark of 6-2¼ (1.89m).

BRIGETTA BARRETT, ARIZONA
This Season: Has won 24 of 25 high jump events – indoors and outdoors – against collegians dating back to the beginning of the 2012 indoor season, and is undefeated indoors. Cleared a collegiate-leading 6-3¼ (1.91m) in her season debut at the Razorback Invitational. Won the MPSF high jump title with a clearance of 6-2 (1.88m). Finished runner-up in the Millrose Games high jump at 6-1½ (1.87m).

This Season: Has won ten of 11 shot put events dating back to the 2012 indoor season. Launched a mark of 61-6¾ (18.76m) in her season debut at the J.D. Martin Invitational, giving her the collegiate lead and making her the only collegiate woman to surpass 60 feet. Owns the top 11 collegiate throws of 2013, and leads the nation by more than three feet. Claimed the Big 12 title in the shot put with a winning mark of 60-9¼ (18.52m), but each of her four legal throws would have won the event.

KIMBERLYN DUNCAN, LSU
This Season: Tied for second all-time with 15 Watch List appearances. Won 19 of her past 20 finals in the 200 against collegians, edged out only once by fellow Watch Lister Aurieyall Scott of UCF by .04 at the Razorback Invitational. Reclaimed 2013′s fastest collegiate time at 200 meters with her SEC Championship-winning 22.54, placing her fifth on the all-time indoor collegiate performers list and giving her the sixth-fastest time in indoor college history. Unbeaten in finals at 60 meters this season with an SEC Championship and the nation’s second-fastest time at 7.16.

ENGLISH GARDNER, OREGON
This Season: Won the Millrose Games 60 in 7.19, defeating three Olympians in her season debut in the event. Claimed the MPSF title at 60 meters in 7.24, and ran a leg of the Ducks’ victorious 4×400 relay team. Is currently ranked third in a three-way tie at 60 meters. Ran a 23.00 over 200 meters during an SEC Championships prelim, giving her the fifth-fastest collegiate time this season.

ANDREA GEUBELLE, KANSAS
This Season: Is the undefeated collegiate leader in the long jump this season in three events, including wins at the Big 12 Championships and the Armory Collegiate Invitational where she posted a collegiate-leading jump of 22-11½, just a quarter inch shy of placing her among the top 10 collegians all-time. Extended her streak of triple jump victories against collegians to 12 of the past 14 dating back to the 2012 indoor season with an individual title in the Big 12 triple jump, recording a mark of 44-3¼ (13.49m). Claimed the ACC title in the 60 hurdles by nearly a quarter of a second with a 7.90 in the finals. Also ranked ninth in the nation at 200 meters with a winning time of 23.22 at the Armory Collegiate Invitational.

Claimed Big 12 individual titles in the mile, 3000 and 5000. Ranked fourth in the nation at 3000 meters in 9:04.57. Won the 2012 DI NCAA Cross Country individual championship, the Midwest Region individual title and the Big 12 Championships individual crown during the cross country season, winning four of five races and finishing runner-up in the other.

AURIEYALL SCOTT, UCF

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
INDIANAPOLIS - Galen Rupp (Portland, Ore.) has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after setting the 3,000m indoor American record of 7:30.18 at the IAAF XL Galan Indoor Meeting in Stockholm.

Rupp knocked off more than two seconds from Bernard Lagat’s previous American record of 7:32.48, which he set in 2007.

Now in its 12th year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on www.usatf.org. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.

WEEK IN REVIEW - FEBRUARY 18-24
From USATF Statistician Glen McMicken

CONFERENCE WRAP-UP
NCAA Division I conferences dominated the weekend's news in U.S. track and field. Here's a rundown of the major happenings:

SEC -- Marquis Dendy of Florida jumped a world-leading 8.25m/27-0.75 on his second attempt in the LJ and then added an 8.22m/26-11.75 and an 8.24m/27-0.5 for good measure. LSU's Aaron Ernest also twice raced to a WL in the 200, going 20.59 in the prelims and then 20.53 in the final.

Fellow Tiger Kimberlyn Duncan grabbed her own WL in the women's 200 at 22.54, and Charlene Lipsey took over the U.S. lead in the 800m with her 2:02.48
.
BIG 10 -- Casimir Loxsom of Penn State ran faster than the standing AR in the 600m, but his 1:15.42 isn't eligible for record consideration due to the oversize track at the SPIRE Institute. In the heptathlon, Wisconsin's Japheth Cato moved to No. 6 on the all-time collegiate list with his 6,090 point PR.

SOUTHLAND -- Oral Roberts PV ace Jack Whitt cleared a U.S-best 5.61m/18-4.75.

SUMMIT LEAGUE -- South Dakota's string of pole vault success continued with Bethany Buell climbing to No. 8 on the all-time American collegiate list with her 4.41m/14-5.5 effort.

CHERRY PICKS UP HSR IN 300
Michael Cherry of Chesapeake (Va.) Smith broke a 27-year-old high school record in the 300m at the Virginia state meet Feb. 23, clocking 33.05 to trim the old mark of 33.19 by William Reed in '86.

BURRELL A CHIP OFF THE OLD BLOCK
Texas high schooler Cameron Burrell certainly has the heritage to become a great sprinter, as his dad set the 100m WR in the 90s and his mom was a standout for Florida State. He moved to second on the prep all-time list at the Brooks Invitational meet in Seattle Feb. 24 with a 6.61 in the 60m, no doubt making his dad/future collegiate coach smile.

Sasha Wallace (California) and Dior Hall (Colorado) waged a spirited battle in the 60mH, with Wallace climbing to third on the all-time prep list with an 8.18 to Hall's 8.21.

March Bowerman Men's Watch List Released

February 27, 2013

NEW ORLEANS – As the battle for the NCAA Indoor Championships is beginning to heat up, so too is the competition for collegiate track & field’s highest honor, The Bowerman Trophy. The men’s Bowerman Watch List for March, released Wednesday, includes numerous collegiate leaders, world leaders, a collegiate all-time record holder and the owner of an all-time heptathlon world-best.

Four student-athletes made their 2013 Watch List debut in Florida’s Marquis Dendy, Texas A&M’s Deon Lendore, Tulsa’s Chris O’Hare and Washington’s Jeremy Taiwo.

The 10 Watch Listers combined the collegiate lead in a total of nine events, and took home a combined 11 individual conference championships this past weekend.

Dendy’s inclusion on the Watch List makes him the sixth Gator men’s student-athlete to make an appearance – joining a storied group that includes Olympians Jeff Demps, Will Claye, Tony McQuay and Christian Taylor. No other program has had more than three student-athletes named to the men’s Watch List, an honor shared by Arkansas, Florida State, Oklahoma and Texas A&M. This also marks the 50th individual appearance by a Florida Gator on the Watch List, most of any school.

O’Hare’s and Taiwo’s addition to the List gives Tulsa and Washington, respectively, their first appearance on the men’s Watch List.

Full synopses of each student-athletes’ accomplishments during the 2012-13 season can be found below.

Council For Responsible Sport Awards Gold CertificationTo 2013 Chevron Houston Marathon

HOUSTON - The Council for Responsible Sport announced that the Houston Marathon Committee has been awarded a Gold Certification for its sustainability efforts while conducting the 2013 Chevron Houston Marathon event weekend. The Houston Marathon Committee (HMC) is now one of only eight organizations ever to achieve this distinction since the Council launched its certification program in 2008.

The three-day event weekend generated 17.74 tons of waste, 83% of which was diverted out of landfills. The HMC recycled 11.27 tons and composted 3.45 tons, while sending 3.02 tons to landfills. The integrated planning efforts of the HMC, corporate partners, the GRB Convention Center, Discovery Green, Waste Management, and green crew volunteers made this initiative a reality.

"We have a responsibility to the local communities, to our loyal participants, and our corporate partners to operate responsibly in regard to environmental and social best practices," stated Wade Morehead, Executive Director of the Houston Marathon Committee. "We are grateful that the Council of Responsible Sport has created a quantifiable method to measure success in these areas, and to garner a gold certification in the second year of this initiative is truly gratifying."

Running USA 2013 Hall of Champions Dinner & Auction Fetes Honorees

SAVANNAH, Ga. - (February 25, 2013) - At the Running USA Hall of Champions Dinner & Live Auction on Monday evening at the Hyatt Regency Savannah, the fourth Allan Steinfeld Development Award winner and two Hall of Champions inductees were celebrated and feted. The evening presented by Competitor Group was part of Running USA 2013: The 10th Industry Conference that opened to a record registration of nearly 500 attendees in the Hostess City of the South.

ZAP Fitness was announced as the fourth Allan Steinfeld Development Award recipient. The development award was named after Allan Steinfeld, who jump-started the U.S. distance running resurgence when as head of the New York Road Runners he allocated $20,000 seed money for the development program Team USA Distance Running. The program, launched in November 2000, produced training groups such as Team Running USA (two Olympic medals in 2004 and major marathon wins) and Team USA Minnesota (winner of the inaugural development award) and inspired the formation of others. Steinfeld also is a co-founder and President Emeritus of Running USA.

"Since our inception in 1999, Running USA has supported and promoted U.S. athlete development, and ZAP Fitness embodies our and Allan's vision. It is our distinct honor to present this $25,000 grant to ZAP Fitness," said Susan Weeks, Running USA CEO.

ZAP athletes have produced top results from the turf to 1500 meters to the marathon. ZAP qualified five athletes for the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials in the marathon and track & field, nine for the 2008 Olympic Trials, and nine for the 2012 Olympic Trials. Four ZAP men and one woman have qualified for the World Cross Country Team in the last 9 years, another athlete made the World Half-Marathon Team, and four ZAP women have run on the U.S. Ekiden Relay teams in Japan and Korea.

Also at the Monday evening awards banquet and live auction, the 10th class of Running USA Hall of Champions was recognized for their contributions and impact to the sport. The 2013 inductees, the 40th and 41st overall, were:

Ted Corbitt (New York, NY), 1952 Olympian / ultra record setter / developer of U.S. certified course system / founder / pioneer
Nina Kuscsik (Huntington Station, NY), first official Boston Marathon women's champion / long-time USA Track & Field Women's LDR Executive Committee member and Law & Legislation chair / advocate / pioneer
"Ted and Nina are true pioneers in the sport, who unselfishly have given so much and who also often worked behind the scenes to improve and advance the sport that we love," said Susan Weeks, Running USA CEO.

NAMPA, Idaho - The San Diego State track and field team claimed its first-ever Mountain West indoor title at the MW Championships Saturday at Jacksons Indoor Track in Nampa, Idaho.

The Aztecs, who won a MW outdoor championship in 2003, finished with 123 points over the three-day meet, pulling away from runner-up New Mexico (103 points). Nevada (86), Boise State (77.33) and UNLV (66) rounded out the top five.

SDSU head coach Shelia Burrell was named the MW Women's Indoor Track and Field Coach of the Year, while Shanieka Thomas was tabbed as the women's outstanding performer.

San Diego State finished the championship meet in style, winning three individual events and capturing the 4x400-meter relay in exciting fashion.

"SDSU's first indoor title in school history under this staff's leadership is something that all of us are very proud of," Burrell said. "Each young woman on this team competed with heart and Aztec pride."

Thomas claimed her second straight indoor title and third overall (also 2012 outdoor) in the triple jump with a leap of 43 feet, 9 inches (13.33 meters). She also finished second in the 400 meters in 55.67 seconds and anchored the winning 4x400-meter relay team that ran the second-fastest indoor time in program history of 3:42.11. Teaming up with Thomas in the relay was Allison Reaser, Maderia Toatley and Deyna Roberson.

"The 4x400 relay was the most exciting to watch with the team already knowing we had won the meet," Burrell said. "We ran with such pride to hold off a very talented UNLV team. Shanieka Thomas anchored that relay and fought until the end to get the win."

Kristen Brown, who won the pole vault yesterday, took home another title today in the 60 hurdles with a time of 8.40 seconds. Yesterday she ran an 8.28 in the prelims, which was the second-fastest time in school history.

Jasmine Burrell was the final Aztec to win an individual crown on Saturday as she won the shot put with a toss of 51-10.50 (15.18m). It was the second-best indoor mark in program history.

Altogether, SDSU finished with five individual titles at the MW Championships, including Brown in the pole vault and 60 hurdles, Burrell in the shot put, Thomas in the triple jump and Reaser in the pentathlon.

San Diego State also got Saturday points from Reaser (third, 8.53) and Alex Evans (fourth, 8.56) in the 60 hurdles, Roberson in the 400 (fourth, 56.02) and Nicole Oudenaarden (sixth, 47-07.00 (14.50m)) in the shot put. Brittany Gonter also competed in the shot put, taking 12th in 44-05.25 (13.54m).

"I always wanted to be the team staying late after the championships taking pictures," Burrell said. "I can get used to this."

San Diego State now has won five out of the possible six Mountain West trophies in the 2012-13 season. Along with track and field, women's soccer (regular season and postseason), football and volleyball have all claimed league championships. As of press time, the swimming and diving team had a large lead at the MW Championships as well and would make it six out of seven.

The Aztecs may send a few athletes to a last chance meet next weekend prior to the NCAA Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., on March 8-9.

Air Force Claims Program-Record 17 All-Conference Selections

Five Falcons earned multiple all-MW honors.

Matt Bell

Feb. 26, 2013

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Air Force track and field team received a program-best 17 all-conference selections at the 2013 Mountain West Indoor Track and Field Championships, the league office announced. By finishing within the top three of their respective events, 14 individuals (15 events) and three relay teams earned all-MW distinction.

Senior Matt Bell paced the Falcons with a pair of individual all-MW distinctions, finishing second in both the 3000- and 5000-meter races.

Three Falcons earned one individual medal and claimed another as a part of the Falcons' all-conference 4x400-meter relay squad. Sophomore Jake Spuller and senior Uzor Udensi finished second and third, respectively, in the 200-meter dash, while junior Alex Lindsay was the runner-up in the 800-meter run. The trio also earned all-conference honors in the meet's final race, as they teamed up with junior David Ptacek for a runner-up finish in the 4x400-meter relay.

Ptacek also captured all-league accolades as a member of the distance medley relay, where he was joined by senior Ted Artz, junior Jake Hawkins and freshman Patrick Corona in a close, runner-up finish.

In addition to the 200-meter dash, Air Force claimed multiple all-MW selections in the 5000-meter run and pole vault. Junior Isaiah Bragg joined Bell as a medalist in the 5000-meter run, when he finished third overall. Sophomore Joey Uhle became the third Falcon in four years to win the Mountain West title in the pole vault, while senior Cale Simmons (Rocklin, CA/Rocklin) picked up his fifth all-conference nod following a third-place finish.

Also earning all-conference honors for Air Force was sophomore Zach Perkins (Alameda, CA/Alameda), who captured his first Mountain West title by easily winning the mile. Perkins became the Falcons' first mile champion since Brian Carpenter in 2002. Senior Zach Wood was the runner-up in the high jump, while sophomore Evan McDowell earned the same placement in the heptathlon. Senior Brian Ford rounded out the men's all-conference recipients with a third-place finish in the weight throw.

Backed by a program-record two individual all-conference selections, the women's team collected an Academy-best four all-league honors.

Senior Melissa Fuerst, senior Bethany Gross, senior Morgan Mosby and sophomore Rebecca Esselstein successfully defended the Falcons' conference title in the distance medley relay to pace the women with a gold medal.

Junior Annette Eichenberger and senior Jen Bremser picked up their first all-conference awards after placing second in the 800- and 3000-meter races, respectively. Eichenberger became the program's first top-three finisher in the indoor 800-meter run, while Bremser, who broke the program's 23-year-old program standard, was the first-ever medalist in the 3000-meter run.

Junior Kassie Gurnell captured all-conference honors in the triple jump for the second straight year, after finishing third with an Academy record-setting performance.

The 17 all-conference selections are the most by an Air Force team during an indoor championship meet, bettering the total of 16 that was set last year.
