Please email tom@ustfccca.org for inquires including additions, omissions, and/or corrections. This is not a perfect list, but we tried hard to make it as comprehensive as possible.

Attached are breakdowns by event, institution, conference, and country.

Olympians with Collegiate Ties Number 350

July 31, 2012

NEW ORLEANS – Among the 2,236 confirmed entries for the athletics (track & field) portion of the 2012 Olympic Games there are 350 current, former, or committed student-athletes that have or will attend U.S. universities. The athletics timetable starts on Friday, August 3 and runs through the conclusion of the XXX Olympiad, Sunday, August 11.

Southern California, Florida State, and Auburn are credited as having the most Olympians among the track & field entry list with 12 apiece. Arkansas follows closely with 11 and has a list-leading five that were collegians in 2012 (Marek NIIT/EST [Men’s 100/200], Raymond Higgs/BAH [Men’s LJ], Regina George/NGR [Women’s 400], Ivanique Kemp/BAH [Women’s 100 Hurdles], and Tina Sutej/SLO [Women’s PV]).

The SEC leads all of the nation’s conferences as having claim to 77 track & field Olympians – 22 of which were on member institutions’ rosters this season. Their count includes athletes from new members Texas A&M and Missouri. The Pac-12 follows with 57, and the Big 12 is third among leagues with 39.

Of the 350 with collegiate ties, 123 are representing the United States. Eighteen of the Americans on the list were collegians in 2012.

Of the 38 individual event champions from the 2012 NCAA Division I Outdoor Championships, 18 are London Olympians. The Olympians list includes five of the six finalists for The Bowerman – an award given to the most outstanding collegiate athlete of the year.

Morgan State University
Baltimore, MD

Morgan State University (commonly referred to as MSU, Morgan State, or Morgan) is a historically black college (HBCU) in Baltimore, Maryland, United States. Morgan is Maryland's designated public urban university and the largest HBCU in the state of Maryland. In 1890, the institution name formerly known as Centenary Biblical Institute was changed to honor the Reverend Lyttleton Morgan, the first chairman of its Board of Trustees, who donated land to the college.[2].

Aldrich Bailey (born February 6, 1994) is a American sprinter. He attended Mansfield Timberview High School in Arlington, Texas, and has committed to Texas A&M University.

On April 28, 2012, Bailey broke the U.S. High School Record in the 400 metres, previously held by Calvin Harrison of North Salinas High School, at the Texas Class 5A Region I meet in Lubbock, Texas.[1] Harrison had held the record since 1993, a year before Bailey was born.

He was an All-USA high school track and field team selection by USA Today in 2011.[2]

Bailey was part of the US medley relay team that established a new World Youth Best at the 2011 World Youth Championships in Athletics. He also competed in the 200 metres, but finished sixth.

London 2012: American athletes launch protest against strict sponsorship rules forbidding them promoting non-official Olympic brands

American track and field athletes have launched an extraordinary protest against strict corporate sponsorship rules which forbid competitors from promoting any non-official Olympic brands for the duration of the Games.

John Carlos on His Fist-Raising Protest

After winning a respective gold and bronze medal in the 200-meter dash at the 1968 games in Mexico City, two American track stars -- Tommie Smith and John Carlos -- shocked the world when they bowed their heads and raised their black-gloved fists in the air while they stood on the victor's podium.

Eleven national records fall on final two days of Junior Nationals

Eleven national records fall on final two days of Junior Nationals
7/29/2012

BALTIMORE, Md. - Each athlete was determined to make the record books as 11 records fell on the final two days of competition at the USA Track & Field National Junior Olympic Championships. Competition concluded Sunday at W.A.C. Hughes Stadium on the campus of Morgan State University. The 11 additional records brings the total number to 20 records that fell during the Junior Olympic Championships as the Sub-Bantam Girls 4x100m bettered that record for the second time in competition.

Six national records fell on Saturday in an array of events. The first national record was broken by Azariyah Bryant (Moe Hills) in the Sub-Bantam Girls long jump when she leaped 3.73m/12-03. Bryant had to hold off a strong five other competitors who all broke the national record as well. Dylan Carter soon followed in the Bantam Boys shot put with a throw of 13.40m/43-11.75. Carter threw an astounding three meters more than his nearest competitor and broke the national record by almost an entire meter.

Other national record breakers included Sub-Bantam Boy Nathan Leacock (Jr Stride) in the 200m running a time of 28.65 and Sub-Bantam Girls 800m runner Lucea Wright (Los Angeles Jets) with a record time of 2:38.26. Kendrick Law in the Sub-Bantam Boys long jump also came away with a national record to his name. Law (SPARR Track Club) jumped 4.46m/14-7.75 to capture the record and first place crown. The last national record of the day fell to the Bantam Girls 4x100m Relay of Miramar Optimist Track Club. Team members Jada Bell, Myrka Cadet, Amaya Strange and Briana Williams ran 52.91 to cap off the day.

The final day of competition concluded on Sunday with five new national records set. The first record fell to Sub-Bantam Boys shot putter Angelo Allen who threw 8.39m/27-06.50 to win the event. Angelo had to battle for the title and record with Aaron Session (Excelerators TC) who also broke the national record with his throw of 8.11m/26-07.25.

Other national record breakers included Dashana Morris in the Sub-Bantam Girls 1,500m (5:32.33), Quenee Dale in the Intermediate Girls 100m Hurdles (13.80), Kaylin Whitney in the Youth Girls 100m (11.59) and the Carolina Elite Track and Field team in the Sub-Bantam Boys 4x400m Relay (4:52.00). The relay team consisted of members Anthony Vincent, Byrum Brown, Silas Demary and Kailen Perry.

Many junior olympic meet records were also broken on the way to achieving the 20 total national records with many athletes grabbing more than one national championship. One particular athlete succeeded in setting a record number of national championships to his name.

Youth Boy Denzel Harper (Quicksilver Track Club) concluded his Junior Olympic week with not only two national championships but five individual national titles to his name. Harper is the first individual at the Junior Olympics to win five individual events. Earlier in the week Harper took home the Youth Boy Pentathlon title with 3,061 points. Harper went on to win titles in the long jump (6.45m/21-02), triple jump (12.91m/42-04.25), 100m hurdles (13.71) and 200m hurdles (25.01).
