Team USA wins third straight Thorpe Cup heptathlon title
7/22/2012
Bettie Wade (Michigan 2009), Chelsea Carrier-Eades (West Virginia 2012) and Barbara Nwaba (University HS, Los Angles 2007; UC Santa Barbara 2011) finished second, third and fourth, respectively, in the heptathlon to help pace Team USA to its third consecutive Thorpe Cup title over Germany Saturday in Marburg, Germany. The Germans responded in the decathlon competition to take their third straight win over Team USA.
The 19th edition of the competition, the Thorpe Cup is an annual multi-event competition pitting members of Team USA against Germany. Team scoring for the event is determined by the top five men’s and top three women’s scores being added together to reach a winner.
A two-time Thorpe Cup champion, Wade led Team USA with 5,795 points to finish runner-up. Carrier-Eades followed closely behind with 5,783 and Nwaba 5,754 to help Team USA pull out the narrow win over the Germans by a score of 17,332 to 17,251. Germany’s Kira Biesenbach was the women’s heptathlon overall winner with a score of 5,878.
Ryan Harlan (Rice 2004) placed fourth overall with a score 7,683 points as Team USA fell to Germany by a score of 38,521 to 36,428. Joe Detmer (Wisconsin 2007) (7,473) and Isaac Murphy (Texas 2013) (7,373) recorded Team USA’s next two best scores. Germany’s Kai Kazmirek was the overall decathlon winner with a score of 8,130.
World record holder Ashton Eaton (Oregon 2010) and 2011 World Outdoor champion Trey Hardee (Texas 2006), who will both represent Team USA at the London Olympic Games, also participated in select events at the competition. Eaton competed in the 100m dash, shot put and high jump on the first day and the discus and javelin on the second day. Hardee competed in the long jump, shot put and 400m on the first day and the discus and pole vault on the second day.
2004 Olympic gold medalist Bryan Clay (Azusa Pacific 2002) was also a member of Team USA, but was only able to compete through the 100m, long jump and shot put Friday.
Overall Team USA holds a 13-6 advantage in Thorpe Cup decathlon competition while Team USA holds a 4-3 advantage in the heptathlon.
More information on the Thorpe Cup can be found on www.usatf.org and complete results can be found here.
