BERKELEY - Deborah Maier, the NCAA runner-up in the indoor 3000 and 5000 meters who sports a 3.82 GPA, has been named the 2012 National Scholar-Athlete of Year for indoor track & field by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Six additional Golden Bears also earned a place on the coaches' all-academic team.

Maier, a political science major, completed her junior season in 2011-12 with All-America performances in cross country and indoor and outdoor track. She placed 11th at the NCAA cross country meet in the fall, the best showing by a Cal runner in 24 years as the Bears finished 18th as a team.

During the indoor track & field campaign, Maier won the MPSF title in the 3000m and set a school record in the 5000m before finishing in second place in both races at the NCAA Championships. Her performances helped Cal take 15th in the team standings.

At the national outdoor meet, Maier was third in the 10,000m. She later went on to reach the finals in both the 5000m and 10,000m at the U.S. Olympic Trials.

Also earning a spot on the USTFCCCA all-academic squad for track & field were Aziza Baker, Maxime Chevee, Matt H. Miller, Sofia Oberg, Linda Oseso and Chelsea Reilly.

To qualify for the all-academic team, student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.25 and have met either of the following athletic standards: for the indoor season - finish the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org; for the outdoor season - participate in any round of the NCAA Championships (including preliminary rounds).
