Running USA's State of the Sport Series

2012 State of the Sport - Part II: Running Industry Report

National surveys show record levels of general running participation; running shoes and apparel sales also increase; running apps add to the runner's experience; charity running helping to fuel Second Running Boom

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - (July 15, 2012) - A review of the surveys and reports on the Running Industry 2011 reinforce the Second Running Boom record road race numbers that Running USA has reported over the past decade-plus. The tables and summaries below reveal that Americans are running in record numbers, buying more running shoes and apparel despite the sluggish economy, using technology and apps to enhance their runs and raising money for charity via road races also in record amounts.

According to the National Sporting Goods Association (NSGA), running/jogging continues to show strong and consistent growth annually as running total participation (ran at least 6+ days/yr) was up almost 9% overall in the last year. The Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association (SGMA) survey indicates similar growth for the general running population (see Table 1).

DFWRUNS, Susan G. Komen For the Cure Launch New Adventure Event Series

The Juggernaut adventure race will make its debut in Tennessee on Sept. 1

DALLAS - (July 12, 2012) - DFWRUNS and Susan G. Komen For the Cure® have announced a new partnership aimed at the creation and management of a new adventure race series. The Juggernaut national "mud run" series will debut as a 5K mud run on Saturday, September 1, 2012 in Franklin, TN. Additional race dates and locations for the Juggernaut are forthcoming.

WHAT'S A JUGGERNAUT?
What's a Juggernaut you ask? Here's the definition: A large, overpowering, destructive force or object, a giant battleship or a powerful team. The Juggernaut is a 5K (3.1 Mile) adventure that has out-of-this-world obstacles that will be simultaneously challenging, fun and a little muddy! This adventure race is named the Juggernaut to help Susan G. Komen for the Cure defeat the Juggernaut of breast cancer by helping to fund research and local programs that will finally put an end to this terrible disease. Sign up, raise funds, get muddy and help women in need.

DFWRUNS will manage the race's sponsorship, marketing and publicity efforts.

"DFWRUNS is honored to become a partner with Susan G. Komen. Their contribution to the fight against breast cancer over the last 30 years cannot be overstated. The success of their active lifestyle programs - the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® series; the Susan G. Komen Marathon for the Cure® and the Komen 3-Day™ walk have been nothing short of inspiring to millions of men and women worldwide. We look forward to working with Komen in growing the Juggernaut series and helping it become the premier adventure race in the country," said Eric Lindberg, founder and owner of DFWRUNS.

Juggernaut will donate 15 percent of all registration fees as well as 100 percent of all fundraising to the local Komen Nashville Affiliate. Each participant is required to fundraise a minimum of $50.

Since its inception in 1982, Komen has raised nearly $2 billion towards finding the cures and serving women and men facing breast cancer. The Juggernaut national event series is Komen's first foray into the mud run genre.

"The rise in popularity of these adventure 'mud runs' gives the supporters of these events an opportunity to raise funds for breast cancer research and community programs, and have fun at the same time," said Dorothy Jones, vice president of Marketing for Komen for the Cure.

Registration and information for the inaugural Juggernaut in Nashville is available at: www.beatthejuggernaut.com

New Runner Workshop Series Designed to Keep Runners on the Roads

Woodrow Wilson Bridge Half Marathon, NOVA Pain and Rehab present three one-hour workshops beginning July 21

ALEXANDRIA, Va. - (July 11, 2012) - Woodrow Wilson Bridge Half Marathon and NOVA Pain and Rehab have announced a series of Saturday workshops aimed at keeping runners on the roads and not on the sidelines with common runner injuries.

Entitled "Don't Let Injuries Finish Your Running Ambitions," these one-hour workshops will focus on running mechanics and preventing and managing common runner injuries. A free foot analysis / scan will be offered to all attendees following each workshop.

The first workshop on Saturday, July 21 will focus on running mechanics, flexibility and strength training for injury prevention. The second workshop on August 18 will focus on common injuries with runners and what they can do if they have these problems. It also will review items from the first workshop.

Both workshops begin at 3:00pm and will last for one hour. Both will be located at Ballston Crossfit at 1110 N Glebe Road in Arlington, VA. Ballston CrossFit owner Mark Lofquist, who coaches runners about endurance, training plans, nutrition and recovery and teaches "natural" running form, will weigh in with his knowledge and experience.

There is limited space, so reserve now by emailing steve@wilsonbridgehalf.com. The date for a third workshop will be announced later this summer.

Dr. Erik Ward, a licensed chiropractor who has trained extensively in rehabilitation conditioning and the management of injuries, will be on hand this year at the October 7 Woodrow Wilson Bridge Half Marathon at the EXPO and the Finish Line Festival with his NOVA Pain and Rehab team as he was last year.

Dr. Ward believes that a major source of runner injuries derive from the feet, which is why he encourages runners of all abilities to take up his offer for a foot scan.

"The scans look at common foot issues associated with arch problems and foot pronation / supination," said Dr. Ward, who is an avid athlete himself. "The scan will also generate a skeletal image of how the person's feet are affecting their posture."

Woodrow Wilson Bridge Half Marathon Event Director and Founder Steve Nearman acknowledged the support of his race by Dr. Ward and his NOVA Pain and Rehab staff at all four NOVA locations.

"We certainly want our runners to be successful and to prepare for our race and walk about from our race in a positive way," Nearman said. "My coach has always told me that the key to success in running is time in the game. Dr. Ward's proactive philosophy is all about keeping runners in the game."

About NOVA Pain and Rehab
NOVA Pain and Rehab Center provides chiropractic, physical therapy, massage and sport rehabilitation and is committed to relieving pain and restoring good health by providing clients with lasting pain relief and education to prevent the recurrence of the problem. See: www.novapainandrehab.com
