Shayla Houlihan enters her third season as a volunteer assistant cross country coach and will begin her second year with the track & field coaching staff in January.
During her last season on the track in 2007-08, Houlihan qualified for the NCAA Regionals in the steeplechase after finishing fourth in the steeplechase, eighth in the 1500m at the MWC Outdoor Championships. She owns the Utah school record in the steeplechase (10.43.60). She was a member of the fourth-place distance medley relay team at the indoor MWC Championships. Houlihan was also named to the USTFCCCA All-Academic and MWC Academic All-Conference teams.
Houlihan finished her undergraduate career at the University of Northern Iowa as the school record holder in the steeplechase. She also won the 8,000m race at the 2007 Drake Relays. Houlihan graduated from UNI with a degree in exercise science and a minor in coaching and obtained her master's of science in health promotion and education from the University of Utah in the spring of 2009.
