There will be a funeral service for Fred J. Jacobs, Nov. 1, 1933-July 14, 2012, on Friday, July 20, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Wilson & Kratzer Mortuaries, Civic Center Chapel, 455 24th Street, Richmond, CA, 510-232-4383.
I was a neighbor of Fred's on Browning Street in Berkeley for many years. We enjoyed talking about track and football for hours on end. He would fly down to Southern California to attend both USC track meets and football games.
One of his pet projects was the Links in the Chain Program, whereby elementary school children with limited means got a chance to attend USC track meets.
Fred attended Oakland Technical High School, Santa Rosa Junior College and the University of Oregon. He ran for the Santa Clara Youth Village back in the 1950's. His father was a barber in West Oakland.
His brother Proverb Jacobs was a professional football player and the track coach at Laney College in Oakland.
