The Battle Over a Teen's Pink Mohawk

A Michigan high school student says he’s been forced to leave his track team simply because of his hair. Mike Barker, a 17-year-old junior at West Iron County High School, recently styled his hair into a bright pink Mohawk to support his mother, who is battling breast cancer. When authorities allegedly told him to choose between his hair, which violated school policy, and the team, Barker says, “I picked family."

That list is topped by his world-leading 10.01 (+1.5 m/s) win over 100 meters at the Texas Relays to equal the event’s World and American Junior Records.

With his win in the final, Bromell (St. Petersburg, Fla./Gibbs HS) entered into a four-way tie atop the World Junior record book with Darrel Brown (Trinidad, 2003), Jeff Demps (USA, 2008) and Yoshihide Kiryu (Japan, 2013) after having nearly equaled it the day prior with a 10.02 (0.9 m/s) in the prelims.

For comparison’s sake, Brown’s time was run in August, Demps’ in June and Kiryu’s at the end of April.

As if the times themselves weren’t impressive enough, this weekend marked his collegiate debut at 100 meters after just last weekend claiming the early-season top spot on the 200 meters qualifying list at 20.23w (+3.3 m/s) in his outdoor collegiate debut. He also ran a leg of the Bears’ third-place 4×100 relay two hours before his historic 100 meters showing.

The Texas Relays also produced the Division I Women’s National Athlete of the Week, as Texas A&M’s Shelbi Vaughan (Mansfield, Texas/Mansfield Legacy HS) kept it completely in-state with her winning 198-10 (60.61m) in the discus. Each and every one of her five legal throws would have garnered her the win in Austin, which she ultimately claimed by more than 24 feet with a 4½ foot personal best.

With her winning mark she moved into a tie at No. 10 on the all-time U.S. collegiate performers list with defending national champion and current member of The Bowerman Watch List Anna Jelmini of Arizona State, and also jumped to No. 10 on the 2014 world leaders list.

Division II men’s honoree Justin Welch of Findlay (Luckey, Ohio/Eastwood HS) turned in a historic throws performance of his own as he won the hammer throw at the Raleigh Relays with a mark of 230-1 (70.13m) by almost 20 feet over Michigan State’s Antonio James.

The mark is fourth-best among collegians in 2014 and No. 4 on the all-time Division II performers list.

Samantha Elliot of Johnson C. Smith (Kingston, Jamaica) earned the Division II women’s award following a weekend at the Raleigh Relays that saw her win the 400-meter hurdles in 57.52, giving her a share of the 2014 collegiate lead with Texas’ Danielle Dowie.

If she didn’t already occupy the No. 2 spot on the all-time DII performers list, it would have put her at No. 14. She also ran legs of the Division II-leading 4×100 relay and the Division’s second-fastest 4×400 relay.

La Verne’s Chancise Watkins (Blythe, Calif./Palo Verde Valley HS) earned the Division III Men’s National Athlete of the Week award following a pair of Division III-leading performances at 200 and 400 meters. He won both events at the SCIAC Quad in personal-best fashion, claiming the 200 in 21.29 into a stiff 1.1 m/s headwind and winning at 400 meters in 47.72.

He also ran a leg of La Verne’s winning 4×100 relay, which is ranked No. 2 in DIII.

Washington (Mo.)’s Lucy Cheadle (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt HS) won the Division III women’s honor with her dominant performance in the 3000-meter steeplechase at her home Washington (Mo.) Invitational. Her school-record winning time of 10:29.58 was 45 seconds clear of the mixed Division II and III field, and is tops among DIII performances in 2014 by 15 seconds.

National Athletes of the Week are announced each Monday throughout the season, with male and female awards for all three NCAA Divisions. Nominations are open to the public and can be completed here.

Gebremeskel, Bleasdale Win 29th Carlsbad 5000; Lagat Sets USA 5K Road Record

CARLSBAD, Calif. (March 30, 2014) - Racing against 39-year-old multiple Olympic medalist and four-time w orld champion
Bernard Lagat at the 29th Carlsbad 5000, 24-year-old Dejen Gebremeskel (right, courtesy PhotoRun) of Ethiopia knew he had to use experience to his advantage on Sunday morning.

Employing two hard, sustained surges inside the final kilometer of the race, the three-time defending champion out-ran Lagat-and everyone else-to the tape, breaking it in 13 minutes and 13 seconds to claim his fourth straight victory. Lagat, who was racing in Carlsbad for the first time, held on for second in 13:18, breaking Marc Davis' longstanding American record of 13:24, set in 1996. Kenyan Augustine Choge
finished third in 13:22.

"To win here for the fourth time is very special," said Gebremeskel. "After the first mile, there was wind and I could not push. Bernard is a 1500m runner; that is his specialty and he has a good kick. I knew I could not sprint with him, so I had to go."

Olympian Nick Willis Returns to Defend Medtronic TC 1 Mile Crown

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Olympic silver
medalist Nick Willis will return to Minneapolis on Thursday, May 8 to defend the Medtronic TC 1 Mile title he won last year in record-setting fashion, race organizer Twin Cities In Motion
announced. Willis, the 1500-meter runner-up at the Beijing Games in 2008 for New Zealand, will target the course record of 3:56.1 he set last year and the $10,000 bonus that comes with bettering it.

The 10th anniversary Medtronic TC 1 Mile, to be held just two days after the 60th anniversary of Roger Bannister's first-ever sub-four-minute mile, will draw more than 3,000 runners to downtown Minneapolis for a full evening of racing. A festive Nicollet Mall atmosphere - where Minneapolitans enjoying the downtown nightlife cheer runners along the route - makes the Medtronic TC 1 Mile a unique event on the Minnesota and national running calendar.

"I'm excited to be returning to the Twin Cities to defend my title in the Medtronic TC 1 Mile," Willis told race organizers. "I was blown away by the size of the fields that went before our elite race, and it really pumped me up to run fast despite the cold temperatures last year. It is a fun event with one of the best prize purses available in our sport, so I hope to continue making it part of my yearly schedule."

AUSTIN, Texas – The California Golden Bears track & field team were in two finals on Saturday in Austin, Texas at the 87th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays at Mike A. Myers Stadium. Senior Milan Ristic finished third in the 110-meter hurdles, after running a wind-aided 13.59 Saturday afternoon in the final. Additionally, Cal’s 4x100-meter relay team finished sixth with a time of 40.31 on Saturday after having qualified for the final Friday with a time of 40.24.

“We are really pleased with how sharp we were on the second day,” Director of track & field Tony Sandoval said on Saturday afternoon. “Milan’s time in the 110-meter hurdles would have been a career best, except it was just over 2.00 for wind, but he will continue to run even better as the season progresses. Sixth place in the relay out of lane one was very impressive, considering we qualified ninth in the prelims.”

Cal’s 4x100-meter relay team comprised of freshman Khalfani Muhammad, redshirt seniors Tom Blocker, Dash Oliver and Ristic posted a time of 40.31 and placed sixth in Saturday’s final. The Bears finished behind Florida, who set a new meet record (38.29), Texas A&M (38.30), Baylor (39.39), Auburn (39.17) and Louisiana Tech (39.66). Cal’s time in Saturday’s final was just behind their qualifying time on Friday of 40.24.

Ristic, who also competed earlier in the day in the 4x100 relay, had a very impressive showing in the 110-meter hurdles with a third place finish, posting a wind-aided time of 13.59 (+2.1). The transfer from UNC Asheville had qualified for the final yesterday with a new legal PR of 13.71, which is just one hundredth of a second behind the Serbian national record. In Saturday’s final, Ristic finished behind Texas A&M senior Wayne Davis II (13.442) and Florida senior Evan Lovett (13.448).

California now prepares for a very busy weekend ahead, as they will be sending various contingents to three separate meets; the San Francisco State Distance Festival (Friday, April 4), the Stanford Invitational (Friday and Saturday) and the tri-meet in Charlottesville, Va. against Virginia and Michigan (Saturday, April 5).

AUSTIN, Texas – The California Golden Bears track & field team had seven student-athletes compete in Austin, Texas in the 87th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays on Friday at Mike A. Myers Stadium. Though the weather wasn’t cooperating, Cal’s 4x100-meter relay team qualified for the final on Saturday with a time of 40.24, which was their best time thus far this season. In addition, senior Milan Ristic set a PR in the 110-meter hurdles, shattering his previous best with a 13.71 on Friday morning and qualified for the final. Redshirt sophomore Jonte Grant also had an impressive day in the triple jump, coming close to his personal best, obtaining a mark of 50-6.25 (15.40m) and placing third.

“Large hail and thunderstorms hampered the meet throughout the day with delays that effected warm ups,” Director of track & field Tony Sandoval said from Austin on Saturday night. “We're pleased that the 4x100 relay and Milan are in the finals tomorrow. Jonte and Malaina also jumped well under these conditions.”

Cal’s 4x100-meter relay team comprised of freshman Khalfani Muhammad, redshirt seniors Tom Blocker, Dash Oliver and Ristic opened the morning on a high note for the Bears, posting a 40.24. Their time in heat number two held up as the ninth best time during the preliminary heats, qualifying them for Saturday afternoon’s final, which is set to start at approximately 11:30 a.m. PT.

Ristic followed up his relay success with some individual accolades, breaking through with a 13.71 in the 110-meter hurdles and qualifying with the third best time. He shattered his previous PR of 13.88, set back in 2012 prior to his transfer from UNC Asheville. Ristic was behind Florida senior Evan Lovett (13.62) and Texas A&M senior Wayne Davis II (13.64), as the three were definitely the class of the preliminary round.

Blocker also impressed in the 100-meters, clocking a time of 10.56, which is below his personal best, but is certainly a promising start to his final outdoor season for the Golden Bears. Muhammad’s time of 10.71 was a bit below his previous outing in Sacramento last weekend (10.60), but he is showing continued improvement from his indoor campaign.

Grant, a Hayward native, rebounded from fouls on his first and third attempts to post a solid mark of 50-6.25 on his fourth jump, which is just four-and-a-half inches shy of his PR set in February of this year during the indoor season at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships in Seattle. Payton also did well despite the conditions, posting a mark of 20-0.25 (6.10m) in the long jump competition, placing seventh.

The men’s 4x100-meter relay (approx. 11:30 a.m. PT) and Ristic (110-meter hurdles at approx. 12:50 p.m. PT) will be in action on Saturday in Austin for the finals of their respective events. The Texas Relays are being broadcast live on the Longhorn Network and fans can also follow along live here.

The Warm-Up Lap: Outdoor College Track & Field Weekend Outlook
March 27, 2014

NEW ORLEANS – While the official start of the 2014 collegiate outdoor track & field season came in mid-February for Division II and the beginning of March in Divisions I & III, for many teams around the nation the de facto beginning is this weekend.

Collegiate Event Summary
All-College Leaders

A whopping 95 meets are on the schedule over the course of the next few days, which began yesterday most notably with the opening day of the four-day Texas Relays – this week’s USTFCCCA National Meet of the Week.

Austin, Texas, has been and will continue buzzing with collegiate (and also high school) track & field action as 14 top-25 Division I men’s teams and 13 more top-25 DI women’s squads – not to mention a handful of nationally ranked Division II and III programs – are among the hundreds of athletes competing.

For more information on the meet visit either the official Texas Relays headquarters or the USTFCCCA Infozone Meets this Weekend page.

Defending NCAA men’s decathlon national champ Johannes Hock of Texas and women’s heptathlon winner Lindsay Vollmer of Kansas have already been in action and more exceptional performances promise to follow.

The meet has produced 28 top-10 all-time collegiate performances on the current list, including marks from 2013 by active defending national champions Ole Miss’ Sam Kendricks (men’s pole vault), Julian Wruck of UCLA (men’s discus) and Bethany Firsick of South Dakota (women’s pole vault).

While the weather may be nice at Texas – as well as in North Carolina for the Raleigh Relays, in Arizona for the Arizona State Invitational and in California for the San Diego State Aztec Invitational – other areas around the country have been less fortunate. As of publication, at least five meets in the Northeast and Midwest have been cancelled.

Most nationally-ranked Division I teams are congregating at those aforementioned fair-weathered locations, but Division II and Division III teams are spread out amongst many separate meets.

A number of last season’s top Division II programs, including the defending champion Saint Augustine’s men and two of the top three women’s teams in Johnson C. Smith and Grand Valley State, will attend the Raleigh Relays, while several top Division III programs will compete at the Washington (Mo.) Invitational (Washington (Mo.), Illinois Wesleyan, Cedarville, Central (Iowa)) and the Tufts Snowflake Classic (MIT, Wheaton (Mass.), and Bates).

A more detailed breakdown of where top-10 teams will be competing – and how you can watch some of those meets live online and on television – can be found below.

UW-La Crosse Men & Women Begin 2014 Division III Outdoor T&F Season at No. 1
March 26, 2014

NEW ORLEANS – Both the UW-La Crosse men and women will start their 2014 outdoor track & field campaigns at No. 1 in the preseason U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division III National Team Computer Rankings released Wednesday.

Using a combination of data from the current 2014 outdoor season (not the indoor season) and the top 2013 marks by returning student-athletes, the UWL men are projected as heavy favorites to defend their national outdoor title over in-state rival UW-Eau Claire, while the computers see little difference between the UWL women and two-time defending national outdoor team champion Wartburg.

After a fifth-place finish a year ago, the Eagles women (172.46 team rankings points) were boosted to the No. 1 position behind 10 performers ranked within the top 10 of their respective events.

Among them are the top-ranked 4×100 and 4×400 relay teams and Jaime Ludwigson in the top five both at 100 (No. 5) and 200 meters (No. 4).

DIII Rankings Home

Top-ranked shot putter Kayla Hemann and steepler Sammi Bruett lifted the reigning champion Wartburg women to No. 2 with 171.95 team rankings points – little more than a half point behind UWL.

A successful title defense by the Knights would make them the third women’s team in DIII history to win three consecutive outdoor national titles, and the first since Wheaton (Mass.) from 2001-03. UW-Oshkosh (1995-97) and Christopher Newport (1987-89) also accomplished the feat.

History is on Wartburg’s side as three of the past four preseason No. 1s have proceeded to finish the season at No. 1, including the Knights in each of the past two seasons. The one team that didn’t? Also Wartburg in 2011, when it finished runner-up.

Rowan (127.86) came in at No. 3, followed by two-time defending indoor champion No. 4 UW-Oshkosh (119.69) and No. 5 Johns Hopkins (103.31), the two-time defending cross country champions from the fall.

With 13 competitors ranked among the top 10 in their events – including top-ranked Bryan Klister (pole vault) and the No. 1 4×100 relay – the UW-La Crosse men (232.34 team rankings points) are heavy favorites over the rest of the field.

As both the preseason favorite and the recent indoor champion, recent history as it relates to UW-La Crosse is a mixed bag. The good news for the Eagles is that three of the past four indoor team champions have gone on to complete the sweep with a matching outdoor title.

The bad news? None of them have done it as the outdoor preseason (or week one) favorite since the beginning of the USTFCCCA rankings in 2010. The last time UWL was the preseason No. 1 in 2012 it finished runner-up.

Next up is No. 2 UW-Eau Claire (150.23) behind Thurgood Dennis as the top-ranked man at 100 and 200 meters, the No. 2 man at 400 meters, and a potential member of the top-ranked 4×400 relay.

No. 3 UW-Oshkosh (143.67), No. 4 UW-Whitewater (127.12) and No. 5 Whitworth (90.57) rounded out the top five.

The national team rankings will be complied by mathematical formulae based on national descending order lists. The purpose and methodology of the rankings is to create an index that showcases the teams that have the best potential of achieving the top spots in the national team race. Rankings points do not equate with NCAA Championships team points. A full description of the rankings can be found here.
