Gebremeskel, Bleasdale Win 29th Carlsbad 5000; Lagat Sets USA 5K Road Record

CARLSBAD, Calif. (March 30, 2014) - Racing against 39-year-old multiple Olympic medalist and four-time w orld champion
Bernard Lagat at the 29th Carlsbad 5000, 24-year-old Dejen Gebremeskel (right, courtesy PhotoRun) of Ethiopia knew he had to use experience to his advantage on Sunday morning.

Employing two hard, sustained surges inside the final kilometer of the race, the three-time defending champion out-ran Lagat-and everyone else-to the tape, breaking it in 13 minutes and 13 seconds to claim his fourth straight victory. Lagat, who was racing in Carlsbad for the first time, held on for second in 13:18, breaking Marc Davis' longstanding American record of 13:24, set in 1996. Kenyan Augustine Choge
finished third in 13:22.

"To win here for the fourth time is very special," said Gebremeskel. "After the first mile, there was wind and I could not push. Bernard is a 1500m runner; that is his specialty and he has a good kick. I knew I could not sprint with him, so I had to go."

Olympian Nick Willis Returns to Defend Medtronic TC 1 Mile Crown

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Olympic silver
medalist Nick Willis will return to Minneapolis on Thursday, May 8 to defend the Medtronic TC 1 Mile title he won last year in record-setting fashion, race organizer Twin Cities In Motion
announced. Willis, the 1500-meter runner-up at the Beijing Games in 2008 for New Zealand, will target the course record of 3:56.1 he set last year and the $10,000 bonus that comes with bettering it.

The 10th anniversary Medtronic TC 1 Mile, to be held just two days after the 60th anniversary of Roger Bannister's first-ever sub-four-minute mile, will draw more than 3,000 runners to downtown Minneapolis for a full evening of racing. A festive Nicollet Mall atmosphere - where Minneapolitans enjoying the downtown nightlife cheer runners along the route - makes the Medtronic TC 1 Mile a unique event on the Minnesota and national running calendar.

"I'm excited to be returning to the Twin Cities to defend my title in the Medtronic TC 1 Mile," Willis told race organizers. "I was blown away by the size of the fields that went before our elite race, and it really pumped me up to run fast despite the cold temperatures last year. It is a fun event with one of the best prize purses available in our sport, so I hope to continue making it part of my yearly schedule."
