Olympian Nick Willis Returns to Defend Medtronic TC 1 Mile Crown

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Olympic silver
medalist Nick Willis will return to Minneapolis on Thursday, May 8 to defend the Medtronic TC 1 Mile title he won last year in record-setting fashion, race organizer Twin Cities In Motion announced. Willis, the 1500-meter runner-up at the Beijing Games in 2008 for New Zealand, will target the course record of 3:56.1 he set last year and the $10,000 bonus that comes with bettering it.

The 10th anniversary Medtronic TC 1 Mile, to be held just two days after the 60th anniversary of Roger Bannister's first-ever sub-four-minute mile, will draw more than 3,000 runners to downtown Minneapolis for a full evening of racing. A festive Nicollet Mall atmosphere - where Minneapolitans enjoying the downtown nightlife cheer runners along the route - makes the Medtronic TC 1 Mile a unique event on the Minnesota and national running calendar.

"I'm excited to be returning to the Twin Cities to defend my title in the Medtronic TC 1 Mile," Willis told race organizers. "I was blown away by the size of the fields that went before our elite race, and it really pumped me up to run fast despite the cold temperatures last year. It is a fun event with one of the best prize purses available in our sport, so I hope to continue making it part of my yearly schedule."

Smyth, Mullen Win 39th Canyonlands Half Marathon

MOAB, Utah - The 39thCanyonlands Half Marathon and 5 Mile race ran smoothly on Saturday, March 15, 2014, resulting in 3,700 finishers. The event, which fills local motels and restaurants, is an unofficial marker for the start of "the season" in Moab.

With the temperatures in the low 40's at the start, the runners warmed up quickly as they ran alongside towering canyon walls on a winding course down the Colorado River to Swanny City Park in downtown Moab.

The course is a favorite among many, with the river paralleling the course. Enthusiastic aid stations cheer on runners, and Taiko Drummers provide a boost of motivation.

Despite wind gusts up to 38 mph and a challenging headwind at mile nine on an uphill climb, runners thanked the wind at their back for the last two miles.

OAKLAND, Calif. - Oakland's own Sheila E. made a surprise appearance on the Main Stage of the

Running USA Annual Marathon Report

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - (March 23, 2014) - With the spring marathon season opening, it is time for
Running USA's annual Marathon Report.

Despite several cancellations due to weather and the Boston Marathon terror attack, 2013 was another record year for the classic distance with more than 1,100 marathons run across the country generating 541,000 finishers with a breakdown of 57% men and 43% women (a new high).

Last year, we reported that the estimated number of U.S. marathon finishers had declined from a record high 518,000 finishers in 2011 to 487,000 in 2012 (a 6% decrease), but like 2001, most of the decline was attributed to a unique situation; in 2001, it was post-9/11 travel impacting fall marathons, and in 2012, the ING New York City Marathon, the world's largest 26.2 mile race with 47,000-plus finishers, was cancelled due to the destruction of Hurricane Sandy. If the NYC Marathon had been held in 2012, there is no doubt that the 2012 overall marathon finisher total would have exceeded the 2011 record of 518,000 marathon finishers.

2013 was also another year of unlikely perils impacting U.S. marathons. On April 15, the Boston Marathon's finish line area suffered an act of terror, 4 hours, 9 minutes, 43 seconds into the race. In addition, two large-scale December events, the MetroPCS Dallas White Rock Marathon and St. Jude Memphis Marathon were cancelled due to inclement weather, both the same weekend. The result of those unable to finish the Boston Marathon as well as event cancellations was approximately 13,000 fewer marathon finishers for 2013 in those events. But the return of the New York City Marathon (left, PhotoRun) with its record 50,266 finishers helped push the aforementioned 2013 number to a new high.
