Andrew Conning 谈中国通识教育

Andrew Conning 谈中国通识教育

Abstract: What will it take for China to educate world leaders? I will answer this question in two parts. First, I will describe the challenges people of all societies face in adapting to the cognitive demands of citizenship in a globalized world. Then I will examine the potential of education in Mainland China to meet these demands. There will be ample opportunity for discussion, and food will be provided.

Bio: Andrew Conning is a doctoral candidate at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and a Graduate Student Associate of the Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies. His research examines the structures of reasoning with which individuals across cultures make sense of international and interethnic issues. He is spending 2012-13 conducting research in China as a Fulbright scholar and Harvard Traveling Fellow.

Collegians Excel at National Championships in USA, Canada, Jamaica & Britain
June 30, 2014

NEW ORLEANS – Senior outdoor track & field national championships were held around the world this past weekend in the United States, Canada, Jamaica and Britain, with collegians from American universities performing exceptionally well at each meet.

Three collegians won titles at the U.S. Outdoor Championships in Sacramento, Calif.; seven claimed victories at the Canadian Championships in Moncton, New Brunswick; eight won titles at the Jamaican Championships in Kingston, Jamaica; and a pair emerged victorious at the British Championships in Birmingham, England.

In total, 96 top-five finishes were recorded by collegians from NCAA Divisions I, II and III, the NAIA and junior colleges who competed in track & field and/or cross country during the 2013-14 academic year.

Perhaps the weekend’s most exciting performance by a collegian in Sacramento came in the men’s 110-meter hurdles finale, where first-year collegian Devon Allen of Oregon edged out 2013 American champion Ryan Wilson for the win in a windy 13.16 (+2.1m/s) by just .005.

The time was identical to his NCAA Championships-winning performance two weekends ago in front of his home crowd in Eugene, Ore.

Another first-year collegian capped his season with a national title after winning at NCAAs two weeks ago in Alabama’s Hayden Reed in the men’s discus. He threw 204-0 (61.05m) as one of just two three men to surpass 200 feet in the competition. One of the others was third-place finisher senior Mason Finley of Wyoming.

Junior pole vaulter Sam Kendricks of Ole Miss rounded out the collegian champions in Sacramento as he cleared 18-10¼ (5.75m) on his final attempt to clinch the title.

Five collegians earned silver in their respective events.

Arkansas got a pair of silver medals from men’s long jumper sophomore Jarrion Lawson (28-6¼w/8.03m, +2.6m/s) and women’s pole vaulter Sandi Morris (14-11/4.55m).

Oregon senior Laura Roesler went under two minutes at 800 meters for the first time in her career as she finished runner-up in 1:59.04 for the fourth-fastest time ever by a collegian.

Florida junior Ciarra Brewer was second in the triple jump as she leapt 44-6¼ (13.57m), getting the silver over rival collegian senior Lynnika Pitts of LSU in a tiebreak.

Arizona senior high jumper Nick Ross emerged from a three-way tie at 7-5¾ (2.28m) as the silver medalist, while NCAA outdoor champion Bryan McBride of Arizona settled for fourth at the same height on misses.

Junior 400-meter hurdler Michael Stigler of Kansas used a late rally to surge into a second place finish in 49.63.

Finishing as bronze medalists were five others in Finley, Pitts, senior Marielle Hall of Texas (5000 meters), senior Nick Christie of Missouri Baptist (20km Racewalk), sophomore Shelbi Vaughan of Texas A&M (Discus) and junior Erica Bougard of Mississippi State (heptathlon).

Canadian Championships

Six different 2013-14 collegians won seven events at the Canadian Championships in Moncton, New Brunswick.

Senior thrower Julie Labonte of Arizona was the weekend’s lone double winner among collegians at any of the championships as she took both the shot put (56-1¼/17.10m) and discus (170-5/51.94m) titles.

A pair of collegians added Canadian titles to 2014 resumes that also include NCAA titles. Sophomore Brandon McBride of Mississippi State – the indoor and outdoor 800 meters champ – edged out junior Keffri Neal of Kentucky by less than a third of a second in 1:46.69 to Neal’s 1:46.91.

Sophomore Shawn Barber of Akron, the indoor pole vault NCAA champion and the Canadian record holder in the event, was the lone athlete to clear 18-2½ (5.55m) to take the title.

Agonizingly close to being an NCAA men’s javelin champion before losing his lead in the sixth round, no one would take the Canadian title from Kentucky junior Raymond Dykstra, who threw 257-9 (78.58m) on his third attempt.

Junior Alyxandria Treasure of Kansas State claimed the women’s high jump with a clearance of 6-2¼ (1.89m), while Brendon Rodney of LIU-Brooklyn won the 200 meters title in 20.80 (-2.3m/s).

STANFORD-BOUND DECATHLETE WINS U.S. TITLE

STANFORD-BOUND DECATHLETE WINS U.S. TITLE

Williams advances to World Junior Championships

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Stanford-bound Harrison Williams won the junior national championship in the decathlon on Thursday, scoring the second-highest total in U.S. history.

Williams, who signed a national letter of intent with Stanford in February, scored 7,734 points at the USA Track and Field Championships at Hornet Stadium and qualified for the IAAF World Junior Championships on July 22-27 in Eugene, Ore., by finishing among the top two. The score for the Memphis, Tenn., native was second only to the 7,748 by Gunnar Nixon of Santa Fe (Edmond, Okla.) in 2011 on the U.S. list for those 19 and under.

The heptathlon and decathlon are the only junior championship events being contested in conjunction with USATF’s national championships, which run through Sunday afternoon and feature most of the USA’s current Olympians, including gold medalists.

Williams, a recent graduate of Memphis University School, shattered his previous best of 7,181 set in the USA Junior Olympic championships last year. He beat runner-up Gabriel Moore by 140 points. Williams’ won only one event, his specialty, the pole vault (16-0 ¾). However, he was second in the long jump, high jump, and 400.

Here are Williams’ results, event-by-event:

First day:

100 meters – 10.82 (wind-aided), 901 points; Long jump – 22-11 1/4w (22-2 ½), 845; Shot put – 43-5 ¼, 682; High jump – 6-6 ¼, 794; 400 – 48.11, 904. Total: 4,126.

Second day:

110 high hurdles – 14.98, 852; Discus – 126-1, 633; Pole vault – 16-0 3/4 , 880; Javelin – 164-4, 590; 1,500 – 4:42.42, 653. Second-day total: 3,608. Final total: 7,734 (personal record, No. 2 U.S. junior all-time).

Two current Stanford athletes, each a 2014 NCAA outdoor finalist, competed on Thursday: junior Luke Lefebure in the men’s 800 and senior Michael Atchoo in the men’s 1,500. Lefebure ran 1:48.37, his second-fastest ever, to finish sixth in his heat and 15th overall, 0.35 from the final qualifying spot on time. Atchoo ran 3:48.47 to finish 12th in his heat and 24th overall.

Three Stanford athletes will compete Friday: junior Aisling Cuffe and redshirt junior Jessica Tonn in the women’s 5,000 final (9:05 p.m.) and redshirt junior Erik Olson in the men’s 5,000 final (9:25 p.m.). The sixth and final current Cardinal to compete will be freshman Valarie Allman in the women’s discus trials and final on Sunday (11:45 a.m.).

The meet runs through Sunday and will be televised live on Friday (NBCSN, 7 p.m.), Saturday (NBC, 1 p.m.) and Sunday (NBC, 1 p.m.).
