Final Stats

Seattle, Wash. - The Stanford men earned the first MPSF title in program history, scoring 107.5 points edge Arizona with 102. On the women's side, the Cardinal placed third with 96.5 points, while Oregon won the conference title.

A year after finishing as the conference runner-up, the Cardinal men finally broke through with the indoor conference title. The MPSF for indoor track and field was established in 2002, but the Stanford men had yet to win a team title, despite the women winning five. That would change on Saturday using individual titles from Elliott Heath in the mile and Amaechi Morton in the 400 meters as well as much improved depth, the Cardinal earned its championship.

The Cardinal women moved up from fourth place after day one for its eighth-consecutive top-3 finish at the MPSF meet. Stanford was led by Whitney Liehr who earned her second consecutive MPSF title in the triple jump.

Stanford did its most damage on the way to the conference title in the mile, led by the 2011 indoor season standout Elliott Heath. Heath captured the MPSF title in the mile, running 4:00.52. It was a personal best for Heath, although he ran well below that time in a relay split earlier this season. Heath was not alone, however, as four Stanford milers placed in the top-7. Andrew Berberick finished as the conference runner-up to Heath in a time of 4:01.67, while Dylan Ferris was fourth in 4:03.37. Freshman Michael Atchoo chipped in a seventh-place finish, crossing the line in 4:07.78. Adam Thorne finished one spot out of scoring position in ninth (4:10.70).

In the 3,000 meters, JT Sullivan added a runner-up finish with a personal-best time of 7:57.04. Brendan Gregg (8:06.45), Tyler Stutzman (8:06.84) and Erik Olson (8:09.93) finished just outside scoring position in 9th, 10th and 12th, repectively.

Morton added an MPSF title in the 400 meters to his growing resume. The Cardinal junior blew away the field, running 46.50, as the only runner under 47 seconds. A day after finishing second in the 200 meters, Morton earned the first indoor conference title of his career. Spencer Chase also competed in the 400 and placed sixth with a time of 47.82. The career-time for Chase earned Stanford three big points in the team race.

Later in the day, Morton and Chase combined with Alfredo Corral and Spencer Castro in the 4x400-meters. The Cardinal finished fifth, just edging UCLA at the line.

Also adding three points in the sprints was Tyrone McGraw who finished third in the 60 meters. McGraw ran a time of 6.88, which was just off his season best.

In the field, Stanford was led by Jules Sharpe who finished third in the high jump. Sharpe cleared 7-2 ¼, the same height as the top two finishers, but was third based on earlier misses. In addition to Sharpe, Stanford earned points in the shot put as Jeremy Hines and Geoffrey Tabor finished fourth and sixth, respectively. Hines tossed 57-3 ¾, while Tabor threw 56-11 ½.

Whitney Liehr won the MPSF title in the triple jump.

The Cardinal women scored its biggest points in the jumps thanks to the individual title from Liehr in the triple jump. Liehr leaped 40-9 ½, which coincidentally was the exact same mark as last year when she was also the MPSF champion. In the long jump, Liehr led a 3-4-5 finish by Stanford with a mark 19-10 ¾. Brittni Dixon-Smith and Karynn Dunn also finished in the points with leaps of 19-8 ¾ and 19-8 ¼, respectively.

The other big field event for Stanford was the pole vault. Katerina Stefanidi was unable to defend her MPSF title from a year ago, but did finish as the runner-up with a mark of 13-11 ¾. Ellie McCardwell finished in a tie for seventh with a mark of 13-1 ¾ to give Stanford 9.5 points in the event.

Also adding points in the field events was Alyssa Wisdom in the shot put. The converted sprinter continued her impressive transformation with a sixth-place finish with a toss of 48-10.

On the track, the Cardinal scored points in every event. Carissa Levingston placed fifth in the 60 meters (7.54), while Shataya Hendricks was seventh (7.93). Also faring well in the sprints were Hannah Farley and Kellie Schueler who placed sixth and seventh in the 400 meters. Farley ran 55.54, while Schueler ran 55.85. Farley, Dixon-Smith, Kori Carter and Levingston then combined for a time of 3:39.26 in the 4x400 meters to place fifth.

Carter also competed in the final of the 60-meter hurdles, placing seventh with a time of 8.50. Teammate Katie Nelms was one spot better in sixth, running 8.47.

In the middle distances, Justine Fedronic added a fourth-place finish in the 800 meters, running a time of 2:07.37. In the mile, Kristin Reese finished sixth with a time of 4:48.27.

In the 3,000 meters, Jessica Tonn and Stephanie Marcy finished third and fourth. Tonn ran a time of 9:19.77, while Marcy ran 9:19.96. Marcy completed a big weekend after placing third in the 5,000 meters on Friday night.

The Cardinal will now have one last weekend to earn NCAA qualifying standards at meet in Washington and Arkansas. Otherwise, all that remains of the indoor season is the NCAA Indoor Championships on March 11-12.

Miles Unterreiner won the MPSF title in the 5,000 meters.

Seattle, Wash. - The MPSF Championships are underway and after one day, the Stanford men have the lead with 40.5 points. The Cardinal has a narrow edge over UCLA with 37.5 and Oregon with 36. Meanwhile, the Cardinal women are in fourth place with 20 points, but have many of its strongest events during day two on Saturday. Arizona State leads the women's competition with 41 points.

Highlighting the day was Miles Unterreiner earning the loan individual MPSF title for the Cardinal. He and his teammates in the distances did most of the damage in giving Stanford the day-one lead.

The Cardinal built its lead in the 5,000 meters by placing three in the top eight scoring positions. Unterreiner ran a personal best of 13:48.13 to earn the individual MPSF title. The Cardinal junior won his first major individual title in track after being a consistent contributor in cross country over the past two seasons. Although the time was just off the NCAA auto qualifier, it would currently put Unterreiner 13th on the NCAA list.

Unterreiner just out-leaned Mohamud Ige of Arizona who battled with Unterreiner and Chris Derrick over the final lap for the title. Derrick was not far back, placing third in his 2011 indoor debut. The seven-time All-American cruised to a time of 13:49.05 to score six points for the team. Also grabbing a couple points was Erik Olson who finished seventh in 13:59.87. Overall, the Cardinal scored 18 points in the event and Benjamin Johnson just missed a scoring position, placing ninth in 14:04.81. Brendan Gregg (14:13.66) and Kevin Havel (14:32.0) also ran with the leaders early, before falling out of scoring position.

The distance crew would add six more points in the DMR as the team of Elliott Heath, Spencer Chase, Dylan Ferris and JT Sullivan would finish third. The Cardinal finished with a time of 9:34.92, well off its season best, as it did not necessarily run its strongest order and team.

Missing from the DMR was the other big scorer for Stanford as Amaechi Morton competed in the 200 meters. Morton placed second with a time of 21.52 to score eight big points for the Cardinal. Morton also competed in the prelims of the 60-meter hurdles, running a time of 8.27, but will not advance.

In the final of the weight throw, Carter Wells tossed a season best of 62-6 to place fourth and earn five points for the Cardinal. Wells was unable to defend his MPSF title from a year ago, but still scored solid points for his team. Also faring well in the event was Quinn Dawson who took seventh with throw of 57-11 and earned two points for Stanford.

The other Cardinal scorer in the field was Corey Dysick in the pole vault. Dysick vaulted a season best of 16-3 ½ to place in a tie for seventh and score 1.5 points for Stanford.

Also in the field was the long jump, where Kevin Cardey placed 15th with a leap of 22-4 ½.

Leading Stanford in day one qualifying in the sprints was Tyrone McGraw in the 60 meters. McGraw ran a time of 6.93 to get through to tomorrow's final. He will be the fifth qualifier and barring a DQ will be a lock to score points for Stanford. Colin Hepburn also competed in the event, but did not advance after running 7.03. Hepburn also doubled in the 200, placing 20th in 22.40.

The women's distance runners also did some damage as the DMR placed third as well. The team of Madeline Duhon, Kellie Schueler, Justine Fedronic and Jessica Tonn ran a time of 11:18.80, which was a season best for the Cardinal.

Also earning six points for Stanford after her sixth-place finish in the 5,000 meters was Stephanie Marcy. Marcy clocked a personal-best time of 16:16.91 in the process. Emilie Amaro (16:58.63), Victoria Pennings (17:09.06) and Alex Gits (17:34.42) also competed in the event, but finished out of the points.

Leading the Stanford women in the sprints was Carissa Levingston who placed fourth in the 200 meters with a time of 24.11. The fourth-place finish earned five points for the team, while Kori Carter chipped in a sixth-place finish to earn three points, crossing the line in 24.35. Shataya Hendricks (24.72), Hannah Farley (25.03), Joy O'Hare (25.07), Taylor Dewberry (25.89) and Kala Stepter (26.28) finished out of the places.

Levingston and Hendricks also doubled in the 60 meters, making it out of the prelims and into Saturday's final. Levingston finished as the fifth qualifier in 7.52, while Hendricks was the seventh qualifier in 7.55. Both will run in Saturday's final in the event.

Stanford's freshmen hurdling duo continued their strong season by both advancing out of the prelims to Saturday's final. Carter ran a time of 8.34 to place fifth in qualifying, while Katie Nelms was seventh with a time of 8.51. The time for Carter was just off her school record of 8.33 set in New Mexico, but based on the altitude conversion is actually an improvement on the national list.

Saturday will mark the completion of the MPSF Championships, as most of the finals will be contested. The Cardinal men will be looking for its first-ever MPSF title, while the women will look for its first title since 2009.

Bears Capture 3 Titles at MPSF Championships

Morrison (heptathlon), Suleman (triple jump), Stewart (60 hurdles) Win for Cal

Hammed Suleman

Feb. 26, 2011

SEATTLE, Wash. - Golden Bears captured three titles on the second day of the MPSF Track & Field Indoor Championships Saturday. Mike Morrison led the group with an NCAA meet automatic qualifying total of 5,694 points in the heptathlon, while Hammed Suleman won the triple jump and Ray Stewart prevailed in the 60-meter hurdles.

In the team competition, both the men's and women's squads placed sixth. Stanford led the men's field and Oregon won the women's race.

"Saturday was a good day for the Golden Bears, and I thought everyone competed very hard," said director of track & field Tony Sandoval. "The trio of Mike Morrison, Hammed Suleman and Ray Stewart dominated their respective events. We had a number of indoor PRs, and I was especially impressed with those who competed in multiple events and scored. Other than for Morrison, we'll have to wait out the descending order next week to see which athletes qualify for NCAAs on provisional marks."

Morrison successfully defended his 2010 heptathlon crown, winning by 280 points over second-place Casey DiCesare of UCLA, who finished with 5,414 points. Morrison didn't finish below third in any of the seven events and will now have a chance to improve on his third-place NCAA national showing from last year.

Morrison's point total was just above the NCAA standard of 5,675 to earn an automatic berth at the championships, which will be contested March 11-12 in Fayetteville, Ark. In addition to his performance, Kevin Kuechler took eighth in the heptathlon with 5,014 points and Idarre Coles was 11th with 4,717.

Suleman captured the triple jump with a personal-best 52-10.75, which puts him ninth on Cal's all-time performer list. Only Lenards Ozolinish, set the school indoor record of 54-2.50 in 1995, has leapt further for the Bears over the past 16 years.

Suleman prevailed by just 1.50 inches over runner-up Jonathan Clark of UCLA, whose top effort was 52-9.25. Suleman posted his winning jump on his fifth attempt, then had to hold his breath as Clark closed the margin on his final try. The Bears picked up another point in the event when freshman Taylor Kientzel-Means placed eighth with a PR 46-9.50.

Stewart won the 60-meter hurdles in 7.91 seconds, a 0.03 margin over runner-up Eric Hersey of Oregon. Earlier this season, Stewart set a Cal record with a time of 7.77 seconds at the Husky Indoor Classic in mid-February.

In addition to Stewart, the Bears picked up additional points in the hurdles from Aaron Burney, who was sixth in 8.27, and Monte Corley, who was seventh in 8.29.

In the men's 800 meters, freshman Jordan Locklear finished third in 1:50.96, a mere 0.68 seconds out of first. Locklear was second to UCLA's Scott Crawford (1:50.28) in the first section, while Washington State's Joe Abbott squeezed between the two by running 1:50.86 in section 3.

Steve Sodaro ran a PR 8:05.68 to take seventh in the 3000 meters, just ahead of eight-place finisher Collin Jarvis, who was timed in 8:06.08.

Patrick Kowalsky, the defending champion in the shot put who underwent shoulder surgery in the offseason, came through with a season-best effort of nearly three feet to claim third at 57-3.50.

The best finish for a member of the women's team was third, a level achieved by four different athletes - Cherrelle Garrett (60 meters), Kirsten Meister (high jump), Allison Stokke (pole vault) and Aziza Baker (triple jump).

Garrett, who was eighth in the 200 Friday night, ran a season-best 7.49 seconds in the 60 Saturday afternoon. Meister also notched her best effort of the year by clearing 5-8.50 in the high jump, while Baker led a 3-4 finish in the triple jump, going 40-2.00 to teammate Amanda Hunter's 40-0.75.

In the pole vault, Stokke set a PR by going over the bar at 13-7.75. Her previous best was 13-7.00. Theresa Raub also PR'd in the event, taking fifth at 13-1.75 to clear 13 feet for the first time.

Taylor Dutch was seventh in the women's mile in a PR 4:48.97. She just missed Cal's school record of 4:48.89 set by Chelsea Reilly last year. Reilly was 13th in Saturday's race in 4:54.86, while teammate Taylor Bryson placed ninth in 4:53.13.

Cal begins the outdoor season next Saturday, March 5, when the Bears host the Cal Outdoor Opener at Edwards Stadium. In addition to Cal, teams from

Freshman Chioma Amaechi Takes Second in Women's Weight Throw

Chioma Amaechi

Feb. 25, 2011

SEATTLE, Wash. - Freshman Chioma Amaechi took runner-up honors in the women's weight throw, while Mike Morrison leads after the first four events of the heptathlon to pace California's efforts on the opening day of competition at the MSPF Indoor Track & Field Championships.

Amaechi and Linda Oseso gave the Bears their first points of the meet by finishing 2-3, respectively, in the weight throw, both in PR efforts. Amaechi's 59-4.25 was more than two feet further than her previous best and came on her second throw of the competition. Oseso improved by more than a foot with a throw of 59-1.50 on her final attempt.

Morrison owns a 114-point lead in the heptathlon with 3,157 points to Oregon's Dakotah Keys' 3,043. The Cal senior, the defending conference champion, won two of the four events Friday. He posted the fastest time in the field in the 60 meters, covering the distance in 7.04 seconds, a season best and just 0.01 shy of his PR. Teammates Idarre Coles (7.27) and Kevin Kuechler (7.36) also ran career bests.

Morrison had the top mark in the long jump , as well, with an effort of 23-7.50. Both Kuechler (22-8.50) and Coles (22-0.25) added PR leaps, too.

Morrison was third in the shot put at 41-3.75 and tied for second with Coles in the high jump with a PR 6-6.00, an inch-and-a-quarter over his previous lifetime best.

Overall, Kuechler stands in seventh place in the heptathlon with 2,787 points, and Coles is eighth with 2,777.

Junior Ray Stewart qualified for Saturday finals in two events. He had the fastest qualifying time in the 60-meter hurdles at 7.95 seconds, while he was fifth in the 60-meter sprint in a season-best 6.93. Joining Stewart in the hurdles final will be fellow Bears Aaron Burney (8.21) and Monte Corley (8.25).

Freshman Chase Wheeler took fourth in the long jump with a PR mark of 23-10.75 despite fouling on five of his six attempts. Hammed Suleman added more points for Cal with a tie for sixth at 23-8.25.

In the sprints, Cherrelle Garrett established a pair of season bests. She qualified for Saturday's final in the 60 meters with the No. 3 time of the day in 7.51 seconds, while she placed eighth in the 200 in 24.42. In addition, Emani Truluck qualified for Saturday's final in the 60 hurdles in 8.55 seconds.

Both the men's and women's distance medley relays finished fifth - the men in 9:38.69 and the women in 11:23.91.

Through six events, the Cal men stand in eighth place with 15 points and the women are fifth with 19. Stanford leads the men's competition, with Arizona State atop the women's field. The MPSF meet resumes at 11 a.m. Saturday and continues through the final event at 3 p.m.
