Collegiate Track & Field Weekend Review: February 14, 2011; Kynard With Huge Jump

SOPHOMORE KYNARD WITH BIG JUMP

The weekend’s most-historically significant performance came from Kansas State sophomore Erik Kynard. For his fourth win of the season in the men’s high jump, Kynard took the Tyson Invitational with a collegiate-leading clearance of 7-7¾ (2.33m). Only two other collegians all-time have jumped higher in the indoor season – Hollis Conway, UL-Lafayette, 2.37m, 7-9¼, 1989 and Brian Brown, Northwestern Louisiana, 2.34m, 7-8, 1990.

In the competition, Kynard would clear eight heights, seven of which on first attempts, including 7-5¼, 7-6½, and 7-7¾. Kynard stopped jumping after he cleared 7-7¾ -- not advancing to the next height. Indiana’s Derek Drouin, who came into the competition with ten straight wins in the event would clear a season-best 7-5¼ (2.27m) on his first attempt, but couldn’t keep up with Kynard when the bar went to 7-6½. Mississippi sophomore Ricky Robertson, who finished third, also cleared an impressive season-best of 7-5¼ (2.27m) on his first attempt.

THE WEEKEND TO GO THE DISTANCE

Both literally and figuratively, the second weekend of February becomes a pilgrimage for some teams to “go the distance” and take attempts at securing NCAA-qualifying marks in distance events.

BYU’s Miles Batty clocked 3:55.79 in the mile at the Flotrack Husky Classic to become the new collegiate leader in the event. Batty trailed only professional Chris Solinsky for the race title. Overall, four more collegians would go sub-four in the race, including Florida newcomer Dumisane Hlaselo (3:56.84), Matthew Gibney of Villanova (3:58.12), and Duncan Phillips of Arkansas (3:58.82).

Tulsa’s Chris O’Hare won the Tyson Invitational mile in 3:56.48 and was closely trailed by Oklahoma Christian’s Silas Kisorio (3:56.64) out of the NAIA. In addition, four more collegians went sub-four at Boston University’s Valentine Invitational including Binghamton’s Erik van Ingen (3:57.11), Riley Masters of Maine (3:58.17), freshman Rich Peters of Boston U. (3:58.26), and Julian Matthews of Providence (3:58.87).

Overall, the count of collegians that have went sub-four in the mile so far in 2011 stands at 17.

Matthew Centrowitz (7:50.59) of Oregon was the top collegian in the men’s 3000 this weekend at the Husky Classic – his time stands two seconds off the collegiate-leading time of 7:48.35 set by Indiana’s Andrew Bayer a month ago. Stanford’s Elliot Heath took over the collegiate lead in the 5000 meters with a near three-second win in 13:37.77 at the Husky.

New collegiate leaders were also set in the women’s mile, 3000 meters, and 5000 meters this weekend. At the Husky Classic, Oregon’s Jordan Hasay clocked 4:34.75 as the top collegian in the women’s mile. Also at the Husky, Tennessee’s Jackie Areson drew nearly a five-second victory in the women’s 5000 over Oregon’s Alex Kosinski with a 15:39.81 NCAA leader. Stony Brook’s Lucy Ban Dalen didn’t need an oversized track to run 8:56.77 for the collegiate lead in the women’s 3000. The junior won the Valentine Invite at Boston U., by nearly 18 seconds.

ALL GOOD THINGS MUST COME TO AN END

Some of the longest active collegiate winning streaks fell by the wayside this weekend.

The aforementioned Drouin lost his first collegiate high jump competition in 11 tries on Saturday to Kynard. The winning streak spanned just one day short of a calendar year as Drouin took sixth at the 2010 Tyson Invitational, marking his previous loss preceding the streak.

Washington’s Scott Roth snapped a seven-competition indoor collegiate winning streak in the pole vault this weekend. The 2010 NCAA Indoor Champion no-heighted this weekend at his home meet after opening competition at 17-5¼ (5.31m).

Florida’s Christian Taylor had a six-meet overall winning streak in the triple jump. Teammate Will Claye topped Taylor at the Tyson Invitational by 10 inches in claiming a collegiate-leading mark of 55-10¼ (17.02m).

STREAK MILESTONES

One streak just turned to the number 10. Georgia’s Torrin Lawrence has now won 10 straight races – indoors – in the men’s 400 meters. Lawrence was the overall winner of the Tyson Invitational 400 this past weekend with a season-best time of 45.82. The prior weekend, at the Virginia Tech Elite meet, Lawrence was second overall versus times in the 400, but won his section. So, in 10 indoor tries, Lawrence has been the first to the finish line. The SEC Indoor Championships should make for some interesting headlines as Lawrence could be matched with Alabama sophomore Kirani James, the collegiate leader in the 400, and six-win outdoor streak holder.

INCHING CLOSER

Arkansas junior Tina Sutej, for the third weekend in a row, cleared a new collegiate-leading height in the women’s pole vault. And, for the third-straight weekend, Sutej attempted and came close to clearing the collegiate-record height. This weekend at the Tyson Invitational, Sutej cleared 14-8 (4.47m) to win her fifth-straight competition. The previous weekend, Sutej cleared 14-7¼ (4.45m) at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational, and in the weekend prior to that one, she cleared 14-6 (4.42m) to win the Razorback Invitational.

CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS BEGINNING

The first NCAA Division I conference champions of the indoor track & field season were crowned this weekend. Out of the Northeast Conference (NEC), Central Connecticut’s men (114) claimed a slim, five-point margin over Sacred Heart (109) for their first crown in the league’s history. The top four teams were separated by only 11½ points with Long Island (108) taking third and Monmouth (102½) fourth.

On the women’s side, Long Island topped Monmouth, 138-136, after finishing third in the final-event 4x400 relay to Monmouth’s second. It was Long Island’s first conference win since 2007.

This upcoming weekend will have seven conference championships in Division I including the America East, Atlantic 10, Atlantic Sun, Big East, Metro Atlantic (MAAC), MEAC, and Patriot League.
