Onyewuenyi Breaks UC Davis Record In Shot At Washington

Aggie senior leads Aggies who have seven top-15 performances at season-opening meet

SEATTLE, Wash. - Chidinma Onyewuenyi set a school record in the shot put with a mark of 48 feet, 1.75 inches while teammate Leslie Reed posted a pair of top-five all-time marks in the sprints as the UC Davis women's indoor track and field team opened its season on Saturday at the UW Invitational at Dempsey Indoor.

Onyewuenyi finished fourth in the shot, eclipsing her previous best of 45-8.50 from last year by more than two feet and jumping her past Sara Clinkenbeard who set the previous record of 48-0.50 in 2006.

Reed opened her day by tying for 27th in the 60-meter dash prelims with a time of 7.93 seconds and tying her for fifth with Mina Mohamadi on the Aggies' all-time leaders list. School-record holder Melanise Chapman had UC Davis' best time of the day, crossing in 7.87.

Reed came back later to earn an impressive 12th in a field of 63 in the 200, finishing in 25.50 and placing her third all-time at UC Davis. She moved just in front of Rochelle Carter who held the spot after posting her time of 25.52 in 2004.

Saturday's meet, featuring thousands of elite and collegiate track and field athletes from throughout the country, was the first of two for the Aggies this season at Dempsey Indoor. UC Davis had seven top-15 performances in the high-caliber competition.

Besides her fourth in the shot put, Onyewuenyi had another with her 14th-place in the weight throw (53-7.75). Other marks included a 13th from Ashley Hearn in the shot put (43-4.75), a tie for 13th in the pole vault from Lauren Radke (11-7.75), a tie for 15th from Carrington Mahr in the high jump (5-2.25) and a 15th-place showing from Ofunne Okwudiafor in the triple jump (36-5.50).

The Aggies will return to Seattle in two weeks for the Husky Indoor Invitational.
