ARLINGTON, Va. - The Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) is pleased to announce the 4th Quarter round of 2012 selections for the Runner Friendly Community designation: Peachtree City, Ga., Eugene, Ore., and Columbus, Ga.

These communities have shown that they meet the program's criteria, which includes community infrastructure, community support, and local government support for running. Akron Marathon Participants Run 4 Million Miles, Generate $6M for Economy

AKRON, Ohio - The
2012 Akron Marathon,
presented by Time Warner Cable, added an estimated $6 million to Akron's economy, creating the equivalent of 60 full-time jobs. This is an increase of $800,000 from what was generated as a result of the 2011 race, according to The 2012 Akron Marathon: An Economic Impact Analysis conducted by Kent State University's Department of Economics.

The 2012 marathon attracted 15,000 registered participants, of whom 49 percent were local and 51 percent were non-local. The majority of the economic activity was spent in the main sectors of the economy, including hotels, gas stations, restaurants and bars.

"Year after year, the Akron Marathon continues to have a positive economic impact on the city," said Dr. Shawn M. Rohlin, project leader of the study and assistant professor at Kent State University's Department of Economics. "This event brings thousands of people to Akron to experience the city and spend money."

2013 Mankato Marathon Keynote Speaker is Kathrine Switzer

MANKATO, Minn. - The Mankato Marathon is excited to announce Kathrine Switzer will be the keynote speaker for the Speaker Series on Saturday, October 19, 2013. The title of her speech is "Men, Women and the Marathon; Running Away Together".

People who attend Switzer's speech can expect a humorous, inspiring and informative talk about where we have come from as runners and where we are going. Switzer's remarks are a not- to- be-missed talk from the heart from the first woman who officially ran the Boston Marathon and was nearly forcibly removed from the race by the furious race director because she was a woman who had dared to officially enter the race in the era when the marathon was a men's only event.

Switzer's run and her subsequent work as an advocate, organizer, author and broadcaster changed history. Her talk, as she says, is "not about running but changing people's lives."

Rivero Gonzalez, Kramer Win ING Miami Marathon

MIAMI (Jan. 27, 2013) - Running the first marathon of his life, Guatemalan
Luis Rivero Gonzalez won the 2013 ING Miami Marathon Sunday by separating himself quickly from the field and never looking back.

Rivero finished in 2 hours, 26 minutes, 14 seconds on a South Florida morning that alternated between humid and brisk, playing mind games with the 25,000 runners who participated in South Florida's largest running event.

Mariska Kramer, 38, of the Netherlands won the 2013 women's marathon title in 2:46:07.

The highlight of the day came when
Risper Gesabwa and Moroccan
Malika Mejdoub Camacho both shattered the 10-year old course record for the women in the half-marathon. Gesabwa finished in 1:14:00, 14 seconds faster than Mejdoub Camacho
and 1:05 better than the old record of 1:15:05.

Robert Mbithi, 23, blew away the men's field in the half-marathon with the fourth fastest time (1:05:44) in the 11-year history of the event.

Macias, Kleppin Capture 22nd Tri-City Medical Center Carlsbad Marathon Titles

CARLSBAD, Calif. (January 27, 2013) - What began as a potentially-dreary morning quickly transformed into a day of new beginnings and celebrations for race champions, and over 8,400 finishers of the 22nd Tri-City Medical Center Carlsbad Marathon & Half Marathon held Sunday morning in Carlsbad.

Pesky light drizzle which cleared to mostly-cloudy skies with temperatures in the mid-50s were anything but dreary conditions for defending champion, Mario Macias of Manitou Springs, Colo. and Lauren Kleppin, of Big Bear Lake, Calif. who claimed decisive victories in the men's and women's divisions of the marathon.

In the half-marathon race, Stephen Sambu, 24, of Kenya won the men's race in 1:03:02 and Belianesh Zemedkun Gebre of Ethiopia, claimed the woman's crown in 1:12:10. It was Sambu's first half-marathon.

The Warm-Up Lap: Weekend News and Notes (Jan. 31)

January 31, 2013

NEW ORLEANS – Some of the strongest fields to be seen prior to conference championship and NCAA Championship are in store this weekend, setting up a weekend that could significantly alter the national leaderboards and rankings in all three divisions.

More than 20 percent of all 150 teams ranked in this week’s National Computer Team Rankings between both genders and all divisions will be in action at New York City’s Armory for the Armory Collegiate Invitational, included six top-10 women’s teams and five top-ten men’s teams.

Division II will be on display at the Division II Team Challenge hosted by SPIRE, and the top of the DIII rankings could see a bit of a shake-up as the top four men’s teams are all in action at the UW-Whitewater "Squig" Converse Invitational.

Keep reading for previews of each of these meets and their top match-ups, in addition to some general collegiate track & field news and notes to prepare you for the upcoming weekend.

(DIII); No. 23 Johns Hopkins (DIII)

Though the unseasonably warm January weather in New York City will cool down this weekend, the college track & field action at The Armory for the Armory Collegiate Invitational will be hotter than anywhere in the country. With 22 of the 50 ranked teams in Division I, between both men and women, and 31 total ranked teams in all divisions set to descend upon the Armory, this weekend will provide some of the best indoor fields to be seen prior to conference championships weekend and perhaps even National Championship weekend.

Four national leaders in the men’s championship events and two in the women’s will be in action in the Big Apple, headlined by a stacked women’s 60 hurdles field that will feature No. 1 Clemson’s Briana Rollins, running her first hurdles race since setting her collegiate-record 7.78 three weeks ago, against 10 of the top 25 performers in the nation. Of those 11 top-25 hurdlers, seven are within the top 10, making for a potential Indoor Championships preview. The men’s race is just as competitive, with 10 of DI’s top 25 taking the track.

The women’s championship pole vault field of 19 is made up of nine of the top 25 in the country, with another top-25 vaulter in the college division. Five of DI’s top ten performers are in the event, with three having gone over 14 feet. Also challenging the field will be DIII Ramapo’s Michelle Favre, who could make a run at the DIII indoor record of 13-9¼ (4.20) just two inches shy of her performance this past weekend.

Six of the top 10 female sprinters at 60 meters will be in action, including Clemson’s second-ranked sprinter Dezerea Bryant and reigning winner of the Bowerman Kimberlyn Duncan of LSU. The men’s field is likewise stacked with eight of the top 25 sprinters set to take the blocks. The 400 meters fields for both the men and women will be graced by the nation-leaders in Texas A&M’s former USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week Deon Lendore and Arkansas’ Regina George, respectively. Both headline a field with eight of the top 25 in the nation.

The list of intriguing events seemingly never ends, with 19 championship events featuring five or more top-25 competitors/teams. The collegiate leaderboard could end up with a revision following this weekend and this meet in particular, so be sure to keep an eye on the Armory this weekend.

DII MEET OF THE WEEK
NCAA Division II Team Challenge hosted by SPIRE
Friday, Feb. 1 – Saturday, Feb. 2 | 3 p.m. ET/10 a.m. ET | Geneva, Ohio | Live Results

Men’s Ranked Teams: No. 15 Findlay
Women’s Ranked Teams: No. 13 Findlay; No. 22 Hillsdale

The largest gathering of DII teams at one competition this weekend will occur at the Division II Team Challenge hosted by SPIRE in Geneva, Ohio. A total of 23 teams from around the Great Lakes/Midwest regions will compete in this meet, which is open only to Division II teams – no schools from other divisions or unattached participants.

Ranked teams Findlay (No. 13 women/No. 15 men) and Hillsdale (No. 22 women) will split time this weekend between the Findlay Classic and the DII Team Challenge, and as a result some of their biggest names will not participate in this meet. However, that does not detract from the many high-quality events throughout the weekend.

A number of races/events feature multiple top-25 DII performers, based on performances from this season. The women’s 60 hurdles will pit three of the top 15 hurdlers in Tiffin’s Kina Anderson and Edinboro’s Tabitha Bemis (both No. 10 at 8.68) and No. 13 Sashawna Bennett (8.73) against one another, as will the women’s long jump, headlined by No. 4 Laurie Ajavon of Indiana (Pa.) (19-4¼/5.90m).

The men’s 400 is an event to watch on the men’s side, with Lake Erie freshman Keith Hemphill (No. 8 at 48.24) leading a field of five men seeded at 49.00 or faster.

Keep an Eye on DII: Abilene Christian’s Diarra Elea (No. 2 female in the 400 at 55:05) at the Armory Collegiate Invitational; Ted Nelson Open (Feb. 2); Findlay Open (Feb. 1)

DIII MEET OF THE WEEK
"Squig" Converse Invitational (Men)/Warhawk Classic (Women)
Friday, Feb. 1/Saturday, Feb. 2 | 6 p.m. ET/1 p.m. ET | Whitewater, Wis.

Flash back three weeks ago: the North Central (Ill.) men entered their home DIII Meet of the Week as the No. 1 team in the nation. After a narrow defeat at the hands of UW-Oshkosh and UW-La Crosse, the Cardinals slipped to No. 3.

Back to this weekend, the Cardinals have a chance to exact some revenge as it once again is set to compete at the DIII Meet of the Week with No. 1 Oshkosh and No. 2 La Crosse this weekend at the "Squig" Converse Invitational, hosted by No. 4 UW-Whitewater, which will also be looking to make a run into the top three. Meanwhile, the Oshkosh women will be looking to hold on to their newly-acquired No. 1 ranking the following day at the Warhawk Classic.

The division’s aforementioned top four men’s teams combine for a total of nine individual/relay event leaders of the 15 championship events. The most hotly contest events between all four teams could be the 400 and 800 meters, in which all four have at least one student-athlete ranked in the division’s top 25.

The remainder of the scored meet -and the order of the DIII top four – could be decided in how well each team plays to their strengths and breaches into their opponents’. Oshkosh fields arguably the best throwing corps in the country, Whitewater excels in the hurdles and jumps, La Crosse boasts an impressive sprinting group, and North Central fields a well-balanced attack.

Keep an Eye on DIII: Pointer Invitational (Feb. 1-Feb. 2); Tufts Stampede (Feb. 2); Keck Invitational (Feb. 1-Feb. 2)

Solomon named USA Track & Field Athlete of the Week

1/30/2013

INDIANAPOLIS - Duane Solomon (Los Angeles, Calif.) has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after setting a 600-meter American record of 1:15.70 at the Five Nations Match in Glasgow, Scotland, on Saturday.

Solomon’s time bettered the nearly 26-year-old record of 1:15.80 set by Chip Jenkins.

“The record wasn’t even on my mind,” Solomon admitted. “This was my rust-buster race of the year. I was definitely eyeing the record for Millrose, but not my first race.”

This was Solomon’s first race since his 2012 season that saw him finish fourth at the Olympic Games and claim the No. 2 spot on the all-time U.S. list, only behind his coach Johnny Gray.

“It is really good to start my season this way,” Solomon said. “After the games and the competitions after, I took two weeks off, but I really didn’t loose any fitness. [My coach and I] wanted to build on what we had done the previous year, and I feel we are starting the year just right.”

With Solomon having a better than expected 2013 debut, he was forced to alter his goals for the Feb. 16 Millrose Games at the Armory.

“The whole idea was to go after the American record at Millrose,” Solomon said. “now it might be the world record.”

The current 600m world record of 1:15.12 was set in 1999 by Nico Motchebon of Germany.

Now in its 12th year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on www.usatf.org. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.

2013 Winners: January 9, Bobby Mack; January 16, Mary Cain; January 22, Ajeé Wilson; January 30, Duane Solomon

WEEK IN REVIEW -- JANUARY 21-27
From USATF Statistician Glen McMicken

CAIN SLAYS HS MILE RECORD
New York high school sensation Mary Cain shattered one of the oldest prep marks in the books at the Armory in New York City, Jan. 26, finishing third in the mile at the New Balance Games with a 4:32.78, well under the existing standard of 4:38.5, set in 1972 by Californian Debbie Heald.

En route to the mile, Cain, the sixth-placer in the 1500m at the 2012 World Juniors, also claimed the American junior indoor record in the 1500m at 4:16.11, breaking the old record of 4:18.9 set by Lynn Jennings in 1978.

RUPP SHOWS SPEED WITH HUGE MILE PR
London Olympics 10,000m silver medalist Galen Rupp chose to run a much shorter distance at the Boston Terrier Classic Jan. 26 and his move down paid huge dividends. Rupp moved to No. 2 on the all-time U.S. indoor mile list with his 3:50.92 PR, and also became the fifth-fastest performer in history.

LOXSOM OH SO CLOSE TO 600m AR
Were it not for Duane Solomon's AR earlier in the day at the Glasgow Five Nations meet, Penn State's Casmir Loxsom would be in the books as the 600m record-holder after his 1:15.79 Jan. 26 at the Penn State National Invitational. The 2010 World Junior 800m silver medalist did set an American Collegiate Record, and is the eighth-fastest man ever at the distance.

BERRY NICE WEIGHT THROW IN KANSAS
Gwen Berry of the New York AC tossed the 20-pound weight to a PR 23.53m/77-2.5 to win the Kansas Jayhawk Classic in Lawrence Jan. 25, climbing to No. 9 on the world all-time list.

LAZAS TOPS 6K IN ARKANSAS MULTI
Kevin Lazas set personal bests in three individual events on the way to a lifetime-best 6,042 in the heptathlon at the Razorback Invitational in Fayetteville Jan. 25-26. The NCAA heptathlon and decathlon bronze medalist in 2012, Lazas improved to sixth on the all-time collegiate heptathlon list.

BRACY PACY IN INDOOR DEBUT
2011 Pan American Junior 100m champ Marvin Bracy made his collegiate debut for Florida State at the Razorback Invitational, zipping to a 6.61 to win the 60m.

2012 Legacy Coach Award Recipients: The Legacy Coach Award has been initiated by the PA Coaches Committee in recognition of the many influential coaches who have served in our association, and have selflessly strengthened our sport(s) through teaching, mentoring, and promoting our profession.

Margaret Dixon, Oakland PAL

Coach Dixon is a retired Oakland Police Officer and has dedicated over 33 years volunteering to serve youth in the city of Oakland. It was during her years as a police officer that Margaret founded the Oakland Police Activities League (PAL) Track and Field Team, and since then, the program has grown to be one of the largest youth track clubs in the bay area. The PAL track team has allowed hundreds of Oakland youth to travel beyond the city limits, a first-time experience for many kids in the PAL program. Every year, more than 100 boys and girls, ages 5-18 years old, register to run for PAL, and many of those boys and girls continue running in high school and college.

Walt Lange, Jesuit High School-Carmichael

Walt Lange ranks as one of the nation's most successful cross country coaches guiding the Jesuit Boys teams since 1970. Under Lange's guidance Jesuit has won nine state Div. 2 Boys Championships with eighteen appearances. Through the decades Lange has been a great resource for regional coaches speaking at countless clinics in addition to writing training article for distance runners. As an ultimate tribute, many of Lange's runners have gone on to coach in Lange's footsteps including Scott Abbott, currently the distance and cross country coach at Sacramento State, Micheal Stembler, along with Micheal and Eric Mastalir who work for Nike.
