Korir and Cherop to Defend Boston Marathon Titles

BOSTON - Reigning champions Wesley Korir and Sharon Cherop, both of Kenya, return to defend their titles at the 177th Boston Marathon, but will be fiercely challenged by a talented international field of Olympians, World Marathon Majors champions of Chicago, New York City and Boston, and multiple global marathon winners, race sponsor John Hancock Financial announced.

Challenging Korir for the coveted laurel wreath this year is a fast group of men including 2011 Boston runner-up and 2011 Chicago champion Moses Mosop of Kenya, two-time Olympian and 2010 New York City winner Gebre Gebremariam of Ethiopia, Americans Ryan Hall and Meb Keflezighi, and many more.

Headlining the women's field are Cherop, Dubai's two-time winner and 2:19:31 course-record-holder Aselefech Medessa Mergia of Ethiopia and 2012 World Half-Marathon champion and Amsterdam's 2:21:09 course-record-holder Meseret Hailu Debele of Ethiopia.

Canady, Yates Capture USATF 100K Trail National Championships

BANDERA, Texas - Sage Canaday and Michele Yates demonstrated the versatility of their running talent with wins here in the USATF 100K Trail National Championships, held in conjunction with the Bandera Trail Races 100K event on Sunday, Jan. 13.

Canaday (Rick Kent photo, right), 27, of Boulder, Colo., won his first ultra trail championship, following up on his 2012 national title at the USATF Mountain Running Championships. The 100K course in the rugged Hill Country State Natural Area, southwest of Bandera, suited his mountain running expertise well.

From the start, Canaday took the lead and widened as the day wore on. While most of the field was hampered by the damp day, with mud-slick trails, Canady raced to a new course record, breaking the previous best of 8 hours, 16 minutes, 48 seconds set in by Dave Mackey in 2011.
