Western State Men Climb to No. 1 in the Division II National Coaches Poll
October 30, 2013

NEW ORLEANS – After taking down defending men’s national champion No. 1 Adams State at the RMAC Championships, Western State has taken over as the No. 1 team in Wednesday’s Week Six U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) National Coaches Poll, headlining a number of post-conference championship changes.

Conference championships weekend produced a number of significant shifts in both the men’s and the women’s polls, none more seismic than Western State’s move to unanimous No. 1. It marks just the second time in the past 43 editions of the poll that Adams State, now No. 2, hasn’t occupied the No. 1 spot dating back to 2009.

The only other team to hold the top spot during that time? None other than the 2011 Western State Mountaineers, who took over the top spot after winning RMACs en route to a national title. Adams State took the Central Region title that year over Western State.

This year’s iteration of the Mountaineers captured the RMAC title behind an individual championship effort by National Athlete of the Week Vegard Olstad. The junior defeated former national honoree Kevin Batt and defending RMAC champion Tabor Stevens of Adams State to lead a contingent of seven WSC runners in the top 10.

Adams State, meanwhile, dropped to No. 2 in the poll. The Grizzlies ran without two of their five returning All-Americans from last year’s national champion team. The two squads will meet again next weekend for the South Central Region Championships, and likely again at the National Championships two weeks after that.

Western State wasn’t the only big mover, as the men of Lock Haven and West Texas A&M moved into the top 10, as did the Minnesota Duluth and Southern Indiana women.

Men
Behind Western State and Adams State, the Lakers from Grand Valley State remained No. 3 in the nation following their 12th consecutive GLIAC title.

No. 4 Chico State moved up one spot from a week ago after turning in a dominant performance at the CCAA championships, turning in a perfect 15 team score with the race’s top six runners, all within just over three seconds of one another. The title was their 12th in a row.

Down to No. 5 was Colorado Mines, which finished third at the RMAC Championships.

No. 6 Augustana (S.D.) remained stationary in the poll after winning its fifth straight NSIC team championship. Paul Yak earned his third individual conference title in a row as the men scored a slim 16 points.

Also remaining put in the poll was No. 7 Southern Indiana, which followed former National Athlete of the Week and individual GLVC champion Johnnie Guy and four other top-eight finishers to a ninth-straight league title.

New to the top 10 this week is Lock Haven at No. 8, up five spots from last week. The Bald Eagles were guided by three-time PSAC individual champion Alex Monroe and four other top-15 finishers to the conference title over then-top-10 Edinboro, 37-72. Edinboro is now No. 14. This is the first time in the top 10 for Lock Haven since week two of the 2012 season, and the highest it has been since holding the No. 8 spot during the 2011 preseason.

Despite winning its fourth consecutive GNAC title, the Alaska Anchorage men fell one spot to No. 9. The Seawolves’ margin of victory was a narrow one, just three points over No. 16 Western Washington, which moved up six spots from a week ago.

Rounding out the top 10 is West Texas A&M, which joins the top 10 for the first time since the beginning of USTFCCCA records in 2009. Behind individual champion Dylan Doss, the Buffs placed five runners among the meet’s top eight finishers for a comfortable team victory.

After knocking off then-No. 10 Missouri Southern by just one point at the MIAA Championships, 56-57, Central Missouri is up to a season-best No. 11. The Mules haven’t been ranked this high since week six of the 2011 season when they peaked at No. 10.

Missouri Southern fell to No. 13.

Making a return to the poll is No. 22 Stonehill, which won the Northeast-10 title this weekend over No. 25 Franklin Pierce.

Women
No. 1 defending national champion Grand Valley State extended its streak of consecutive conference titles to 13 with another GLIAC title, lengthening the longest active streak among women’s DII teams. The Lakers placed all five scorers within the top 11 finishers, led by runner-up Allyson Winchester and third-place Jessica Janecke .

Adams State stayed put at No. 2 following its second straight RMAC title, edging No. 3 Western State by just eight points behind individual champion Lauren Martin and two other top-five finishers.

Led by fourth-place Anna Marshall, WSC put four runners in the top 11 finishers.

The No. 4 spot is held by a new team as former occupant Augustana (S.D.) fell to No. 12 after finishing runner-up at the NSIC Championships. Up one spot to replace the Vikings is Alaska Anchorage, which defeated No. 6 Simon Fraser en route to its fourth consecutive GNAC title. Two-time individual winner Susan Tanui led three Seawolves in the top four finishers as the squad is now ranked its highest since holding a No. 4 position in week seven of the 2011 season.

Chico State improved two spots from the last poll to check in as the No. 5 squad. The Wildcats dominated the CCAA en route to a sixth straight title, led by individual champion Ayla Granados and three other top-seven finishers.

Simon Fraser remained stationary at No. 6.

No. 7 Metro State was a distant third behind No. 2 Adams State and No. 3 Western State at the RMAC Championships (37-45-105), but behind individual runner-up and former National Athlete of the Week Janelle Lincks the Roadrunners are up one spot to their highest rank in program history.

No. 8 Minnesota Duluth is into the top 10 for the first time since early in the 2011 season following an upset of five-time reigning NSIC champ Augustana (S.D.), 50-67, behind fourth-place Samantha Rivard and fifth-place Hannah Olson and two other top-10 finishers. This marks the first time the Bulldogs have had a single-digit rank since late in the 2010 season, and the last top-10 NCAA finish for the program was a seventh-place showing in 2009.

No. 9 UC-Colorado Springs narrowly finished fourth behind Metro State at the RMAC Championships, 105-110. The Mountain Lions moved up one spot from the last poll.

Rounding out the top 10 is Southern Indiana, which rejoins the top 10 after its third consecutive GLVC team title. The Screaming Eagles were ranked as high as No. 8 in week three of the 2013 poll.

Just outside the top 10 was Mansfield, which shocked four ranked teams, including five-time defending champ Shippensburg, en route to the PSAC title to jump from receiving votes nationally to No. 11. After starting the season at No. 12 — then the best rank for the program since USTFCCCA records began in 2009 — the Mountaineers had been unranked for all but one week this season. Among those teams they beat are current top-25 teams in No. 14 Edinboro, No. 16 Shippensburg and No. 20 Indiana (Pa.).

Making a similarly large leap was No. 13 Saginaw Valley State, which was receiving votes nationally a week ago. The Cardinals finished runners-up to No. 1 GVSU at the GLIAC Championships and ahead of No. 15 Malone and No. 19 Hillsdale. The rank is the program’s highest since the beginning of USTFCCCA records, and is on par with 12th- and 13th-place showings at the past two NCAA Championships.

Also returning to the poll were No. 17 Southwest Baptist, No. 20 Winona State and No. 25 UW-Parkside. Southwest Baptist is tied at No. 17 with West Texas A&M, and Winona State shared the No. 20 spot with Indiana (Pa.).

The Division II National Championships will be held Saturday, November 23, in Spokane, Wash., and will be broadcast live on NCAA.com.

Shortly afterwards, a 105mm Howitzer M2A1 fired the celebratory salute to signify the beginning of the race and over 31,000 runners began their run. This year's course featured a slightly restructured route that flattened the terrain of the race. Runners ran through Rock Creek Park instead of past Georgetown Reservoir, which was a tough stretch in past years. This modification added to faster finishing times. One of these time was that of Girma Bedada. Bedada blew through the course and won the marathon with a finishing time of 2 hours, 21 minutes, 32 seconds. Quickly pulling away from the pack shortly after the first mile, the 33-year-old Ethiopian crossed the finish line before Patrick Fernandez. Fernandez finished the race with a time of 2:22. As expected, Kelly Calway. part of the United States Army Running Team. was the first female finisher and ran the course in 2:42:16. At mile marker eight, she separated from her group and didn't look back. Calway was followed by Virginia Slaby with a race time of 2:48. Emily Shertzer trailed Slaby by less than a second and came in third. Saucony and Competitor Group Collaborate to Inspire With 26 Strong Project

LEXINGTON, Mass. and SAN DIEG O, Calif. - Global performance running footwear and apparel brand Saucony® and Competitor Group, Inc. (CGI), the global active lifestyle sports media and event entertainment company, have partnered to create the Saucony 26 Strong Project, a program that enables individuals of all running abilities to accomplish the shared goal of completing their first-ever marathon. The project further brings to life Saucony's Find Your Strong marketing platform: that people find personal strength through running. And though running is often viewed as an individual sport, the Saucony 26 Strong Project demonstrates the power that a shared goal can have on a community of runners.

"We were overwhelmed with interest from the running community and received hundreds of applications to be part of the 26 Strong Project team," said Chris Lindner, chief marketing officer and senior vice president of commerce for Saucony. "With the help of our run specialty partners, we narrowed the field down to 52 runners making up 26 teams, each featuring a 'veteran,' or experienced marathoner and a 'cadet,' or first-time marathoner."

Bedada, Calway Win 38th Marine Corps Marathon

WASHINGTON, D.C. - (October 27, 2012) - An 11-member skydiving team carried a 7,800 square foot American flag high above the start line of the 38th Marine

Corps Marathon.

One of these time was that of
Girma Bedada.

Calway was followed by
Virginia Slaby with a race time of 2:48. Emily Shertzer trailed Slaby by

less than a second and came in third.

Conference Championships Shake Up the Division II Regional Rankings
October 29, 2013

NEW ORLEANS – Five new teams have assumed the mantle of being the top ranked squad in their respective regions in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II Regional Rankings following a very eventful conference championship weekend.

REGIONAL PDFs: Regional Summary | Week-by-Week
Division II XC Rankings Central

Western State (No. 2 nationally) took down defending national champion Adams State (No. 1) at the RMAC Championships and now in the South Central Region rankings to headline three new men’s teams atop their regions, while Minnesota Duluth’s women (No. 15) and Mansfield (receiving votes) took down top-10 national teams to take the top spots in their regions.

These moves will likely have a significant impact on the National Coaches Polls, which will be released Wednesday morning.

Led by National Athlete of the Week and RMAC Champion Vegard Olstad, Western State’s men took control of the South Central Region for the first time this season. The Mountaineers accounted for seven of the top 10 finishers for a team score of 26 to Adams State’s 45. Adams State dropped to second in the region.

In the men’s Atlantic Region, Alex Monroe of Lock Haven won his third consecutive PSAC individual crown to lead the Bald Eagles (No. 12 nationally) to the team title over defending champion Edinboro (No. 9). Lock Haven moved to the top spot in the region as a result, while Edinboro fell to No. 2.

Rounding out the new top-ranked regional men’s teams is Stonehill (receiving votes nationally) in the East Region. After falling to third last week from first in the region earlier this season, the Skyhawks won their third Northeast-10 title in a row to jump back to the top spot. Franklin Pierce (No. 19) finished runner-up to Stonehill and dropped from the No. 1 spot to No. 2 as a result.

Minnesota Duluth’s women placed four runners in the top 10 at the NSIC Championships to earn the team title, led by Samantha Rivard and Hannah Olson in fourth and fifth, respectively. With a team score of 50, the Bulldogs were able to derail five-time defending champion Augustana (S.D.) (No. 4 nationally). The Vikings fell to No. 2 in the region as a result.

Mansfield’s women made the biggest leap of any team this week to No. 1, leaping four spots to the top of the Atlantic Region after taking down four teams ranked ahead of them in the National Coaches Poll. Led by third-place finisher Jessica Scordino and two other top-10 finishers, the Mountaineers took down Edinboro (No. 9 nationally), five-time defending champ Shippensburg (No. 13), Indiana (Pa.) (No. 18) and Seton Hill (No. 24), in that order — which also reflects the new regional ranking.

Elsewhere in the men’s rankings:

Central Missouri (No. 15 nationally) moved to No. 2 in the Central Region after taking down Missouri Southern (No. 10) at the MIAA Championships.
GRU Augusta moved two spots to No. 2 in the Southeast Region following a Beach Belt championship, displacing Columbus State from second to fourth in the region.
Western Washington (No. 22 nationally) came just four points from upsetting Alaska Anchorage (No. 8), 32-35 at the GNAC Championships, and move just behind the Seawolves to third in the region.
More noteworthy moves in the women’s rankings:

In the latest in a back-and-forth rivalry, Chico State (No. 7 nationally) moved from third to second in the West Region following a CCAA title, trading spots with Simon Fraser (No. 6). SFU finished runner-up to Alaska Anchorage at the GNAC Championships.
Flagler claimed the Peach Belt title to move three spots to second in the Southeast Region. King moved up one spot to third following a Conference Carolinas title and Queens (N.C.) was up three to fourth after a SAC title.
Saginaw Valley State jumped three spots to third in the Midwest Region after finishing runner-up to defending national champion Grand Valley State (No. 1 nationally) at the GLIAC Championships. The Cardinals finished ahead of Malone (No. 12), Hillsdale (No. 14) and Northern Michigan (No. 20).
NCAA Division II Regional Championships will be held November 9 & 10, and more information about host sites and dates for specific meets can be found at Regional Championships Central.

HIGH SCHOOL WEIGHT THROW PERFORMANCE LIST

The high school weight throw events have been progressively increasing in participants and quality the last few years.

Last year there were 225 boys over the 45 foot performance list standard with the 25 pound weight, and 222 girls over the 30 foot standard with the 20 pound weight.

These numbers far exceeded the intended top 100 for the performance lists.

Based on the approximate distance of the 125th thrower in each gender last year the standards for this year’s performance list are being changed to the following:

. Standards:

. Boys’ 25# 50’

. Boys’ 35# 40’ No change.

. Girls’ 20’ 35’

In order to be included on the performance list the athlete’s performance must have been made in a recognized competition.

The high school weight throw is an indoor event, but in a number of states (e.g. CA, FL, GA, MO, WA and others) the opportunities are very limited, if not nonexistent.

The performances at these meets do not meet indoor meet criteria, but should, and have been recognized on the performance lists.

In previous years indoor and outdoor performances have been included in the same lists with outdoor performances indicated with an “o” at the end of the line on the right which, among other things has caused a lot of confusion.

Starting with the 2013-2014 performance lists indoor and outdoor weight throw performances will be in separate sections as follows:

. Sections:

. Boys’ 25# Indoor

. Boys’ 25# Outdoor

. Boys’ 35# Indoor

. Boys’ 35# Outdoor

. Girls’ 20# Indoor

. Girls’ 20’# Outdoor

An athlete may be on both an indoor and an outdoor list, providing that the outdoor performance is better than the indoor performance.

In such a case, if and when such an athlete’s indoor performance then exceeds his/her outdoor performance the outdoor performance will be dropped from the list.

Wishing all throwers and coaches a great 2013-2014 throwing season.

Bedada, Calway Win 38th Marine Corps Marathon

WASHINGTON, D.C. - (October 27, 2012) - An 11-member skydiving team carried a 7,800 square foot American flag high above the Start Line of the
38th Marine Corps Marathon.

Calway was followed by
Virginia Slaby with a race time of 2:48. Emily Shertzer
trailed Slaby by less than a second and came in third.

Sara Bei Hall and Michael Nicks Win Healdsburg Wine Country Half Marathon

HEALDSBURG, Calif. (October 26, 2013) - Michael Nicks of Portland, Ore. and Sara Bei Hall of Redding, Calif. won the 6th Healdsburg Wine Country Half Marathon on Saturday, October 26. Produced by Destination Races of Sonoma, (www.destinationraces.com/runhb), the sold-out wine harvest and Halloween themed race hosted 2,500 runners from 47 states and 8 foreign countries. The 13.1-mile race ran through the beautiful Alexander and Dry Creek Valleys on a picture perfect day.

Nicks completed the course in 1 hour, 8 minutes, 8 seconds, beating second place finisher Greg Reindl of Denver, Colo. in 1:09:11 and Jesus Campos of Fresno in 1:10:58. It was a happy homecoming for Sara Bei Hall, as she shattered the course record with a time of 1:14:33, outpacing second place finisher
Elle Pishny of San Francisco in 1:20:17 and
Maria Rivera of Visalia in 1:21:05.

"What a fun and challenging race. The course kept me engaged", enthused Bei-Hall. "It was fitting to run my first half-marathon where I started my running career."

Beiseman Repeats, Kurian Claims Redemption at Rock 'n' Roll St. Louis

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (October 27, 2013) - As sunrise broke over th
e iconic Arch, 13,000 runners readied themselves for a chilly early morning journey through St. Louis. The Quinn Family Foundation Rock 'n' Roll St. Louis Marathon & ½ Marathon to benefit TASK returned for a third year with thousands decked out in red in celebration of their hometown Cardinals' World Series bid.

Defending marathon champion Charles Beiseman, 32, won handily despite being seven minutes over his previous time. Beiseman was the solo marathoner in a pack of half-marathoners for the first half of the race, before being left on his own at the split. Finishing in 2 hours, 39 minutes, 59 seconds, the De Soto resident pushed through some tough moments in the final miles to win."It was a good course," he said. "I went out planning to go faster than I did today but I got light headed and my muscles got tight. But I still managed to win luckily and had a decent day. I pulled it off."

In the women's marathon, Emily Kurian, 30, returned to claim redemption after placing 2nd in 2012. Kurian attended St. Louis University and currently lives in Wisconsin.

KAPALUA, Maui, Hawaii (O ctober 26, 2013) - Familiarity was the key to success at the XTERRA Kapalua Trail Runs on Saturday morning.

NEW ORLEANS – It seems like just yesterday the cross country season kicked off, and now the collegiate championship season is about to get underway.

Division II Conference Championships Central

Division II is set to host its conference championships — except for the PacWest, which will hold its meet next weekend — marking the official beginning to the most important part of the season. Divisions I and III will follow next weekend with their own league meets.

In the meantime it’s DII’s chance to shine, with premiere match-ups in many of the 23 meets this weekend. A number of meets have national significance, as seven different men’s conference meets and seven more women’s races will feature two or more ranked teams.

The RMAC leads the way in both ranked team representation and top-flight matchups with five top-25 men’s teams and four women’s teams — including defending national men’s champion No. 1 Adams State among six other top-10 teams.

The PSAC and the GLIAC are also both well-represented in the top-25 with four women’s teams and three men’s teams each. A full breakdown can be found in the chart to the right.

With the other two divisions largely inactive with their own conference championships next weekend, Division II has The Warm-Up Lap all to itself. Read on for previews for the top conference meets this weekend.

*Defending Champions

As has become customary for the top teams in the RMAC, this weekend’s conference meet is just the first in a series of duels over the course of the next few weeks that will culminate in a final showdown at the National Championships in Spokane, Wash., on November 23.

Three of the top four men’s teams in the nation — five from the top-25 in total — and four of the top 10 women’s squads suiting up for RMAC supremacy this weekend, and then Regionals in two weeks and then likely the National Championships two weeks thereafter. By the end of November, the top teams from this conference will be so used to running with one another that they’ll almost feel like running partners.

In the men’s race, No. 1 Adams State has won seven of the past eight RMAC titles, all but a three-point runner-up finish to Western State in 2011. Led by Roy Griak Gold Division I race runner-up Kevin Batt and third-place Tabor Stevens — the defending RMAC Champion — the Grizzlies finished fourth in a field with nearly two-dozen Division I squads, without Matt Daniels, who finished fourth at the NCAA Championships last year.

If the streak is to continue, the Grizzlies will have to get past No. 2 Western State, the only other team to win an RMAC and National title during the Grizzlies recent success — and the owner of the final first-place vote this year. The Mountaineers have competed sparingly this season, with their highlight coming at the Colorado Rocky Mountain Shootout where they finished strong against current No. 1 Colorado of Division I.

Vegard Olstad has been the top finisher in both of his meets this season, finishing third at Colorado.

Rounding out the top contenders is No. 4 Colorado Mines, the runners-up at last year’s NCAA Championships. The Orediggers’ signature performance this season was at Stanford, where they were the top non-Division I program ahead of now No. 5 Chico State.

Also vying for the championship are No. 16 Metro State and No. 20 New Mexico Highlands.

Just as in the men’s competition, Adams State is the defending conference champion and the top-ranked team in the field at No. 2. And just like the men, the Grizzlies will have to contend with Western State, just one spot back in the rankings at No. 3 — making for another national championship preview.

Unlike the men, however, the women have two other top-10 programs breathing down their necks in No. 8 Metro State and No. 10 UC-Colorado Springs.

The Grizzlies finished 11th at the Roy Griak Invitational in the Division I race, led by top finisher Kelly Lamb in 39th overall and Lauren martin in 49th.

Western State’s women were the top non-DI program at Colorado, led by seventh-place overall finisher Tara Richardson in third place among two other top-10 finishers.

Upstart Metro State is looking for its first conference title. The Roadrunners have won each of their past two competitions at the Colorado College Invitational and the Metro State Invitational, led by former National Athlete of the Week Janelle Lincks both times as the top collegiate finisher.

No. 10 UC-Colorado Springs is also going for the title, having finished fourth at the Erik Anderson Invitational and runner-up to Metro State at Metro State earlier this season.

*Defending Champions

Defending women’s national and GLIAC team champion Grand Valley State is up against a field of three other top-25 squads who are looking to derail the Lakers’ streak of 12 consecutive GLIAC titles — which is the longest active streak by a Division II women’s team and the only streak of 10 or more.

Jessica Janecke has led the way for the Lakers in their last two races against mostly-Division I competition. The sophomore finished 29th in leading GVSU to a ninth-place finish in the Division I race at Roy Griak, and she placed fifth in the Notre Dame Gold race to pace the Lakers to a runner-up team finish. Also running well for the Lakers is Allyson Winchester, the defending GLIAC and Midwest Region Champion.

A trio of top-20 teams will aim to snap GVSU’s stranglehold on the GLIAC, led by former National Athlete of the Week Tina Oprean and No. 12 Malone in their first full season of Division II competition. No. 14 Hillsdale and No. 20 Northern Michigan will also give chase.

The No. 3 Grand Valley men have been similarly dominant in the GLIAC of late, having claimed 11 consecutive titles. An unofficial early-season victory over then-No. 30 Michigan State of Division I was the start of a strong 2013 campaign against DI competition that includes a 12th-place showing at the Roy Griak DI race and a team title in the Gold race at the Notre Dame Invitational. Junior Alan Peterson has spearheaded the Lakers in all three of those races.

No. 15 Malone and No. 22 Ashland are the other ranked teams gunning for the team title.

Ranked Women’s Teams

9. Edinboro
13. Shippensburg*
18. Indiana (Pa.)
24. Seton Hill

*Defending Champions

The women of Shippensburg holding the PSAC Championship trophy at year’s end has become a common sight in recent times, as the Raiders have claimed each of the past five conference titles. But for the 2013 Raiders, ranked No. 13 nationally, an up-and-down season in the rankings and strong seasons by conference rivals have cast some uncertainty over the prospect of a sixth-straight title.

The preseason No. 6, Shippensburg fell all the way out of the rankings early in the season before working back up to No. 13 last week. A strong runner-up showing in the Paul Short Invitational Brown race went a long way toward rebuilding the Raiders’ national stock, led by a pair of freshmen in Casey Norton (12th) and Allison Marella (24th).

Though the Raiders have climbed back toward the top of the rankings, they’ve yet to pass the top-ranked team from the conference: No. 9 Edinboro. The Fighting Scots were the top Division II squad ahead of then-top-10 Southern Indiana in the Gold Race at the Greater Louisville Classic. Senior Sarah Krolick was the team’s top finisher in 16th overall among Division I runners in that race, leading three top-100 finishers.

Other ranked teams hoping to break Shippensburg’s hold on recent history include No. 18 Indiana (Pa.) and No. 24 Seton Hill.

Edinboro’s men are the defending champions and the favorites, ranked No. 9 in the national polls just like their female teammates. The Fighting Scot men turned in a very strong second-place showing among DII teams at Louisville with all five scoring runners placing within the top 100, led by senior Bryan Deibel in 47th.

No. 13 Lock Haven is bolstered by one of the top individuals in the nation in senior Alex Monroe, the two-time defending conference champ who finished fifth at NCAAs a year ago. He has either won or finished runner-up in three races this season as the Eagles won the Kutztown DII &DIII Challenge and its home invitational. They also took 19th at the Paul Short Invitational as the second-best non-DI team.

No. 18 Shippensburg rounds out the ranked teams in the field.

*Defending Champions

Both the men’s and women’s races at the GNAC Championships will feature two ranked teams, but the headliner is the women’s competition between four-time defending conference champion No. 5 Alaska Anchorage and No. 6 Simon Fraser.

After a pair of dominant early-season meets, the Seawolves of Alaska Anchorage have been largely idle from competition. A trip to Hawaii in late August/early September produced two perfect team scores in two meets, led both times by 2012 NCAA runner-up and defending GNAC champion Susan Tanui, the country’s top returning individual from the 2012 NCAA Championships.

In just two seasons in the GNAC, Simon Fraser has finished seventh and sixth at the conference championships. This year the Clan will be challenging for the title. Lindsey Butterworth led SFU to a narrow loss against No. 7 Chico State at the Stanford Invitational earlier this season, 51-61, one week after finishing runner-up to Division I Lipscomb at the Erik Anderson Invitational, again led by Butterworth in fifth place.

On the men’s side, Dylan Anthony leads No. 8 Alaska Anchorage as it goes for a fourth-straight GNAC title. The junior has claimed the individual title in each of his three races so far this season, leading the Seawolves to team titles each time.

Providing the challenge to UAA will be No. 22 Western Washington.

Ranked Women’s Teams

4. Augustana (S.D.)*

18. U-Mary

*Defending Champions

Augustana (S.D.)’s men and women are the favorites in the conference, as the No. 4 women are the five-time defending champion and the No. 6 men are going for their fifth in a row.

The Viking women dominated the Maroon II race at the Roy Griak Invitational, winning the title behind two-time National Athlete of the Week Runa Falch. Falch claimed two consecutive NSIC titles in 2010 and 2011.

Challenging the Vikings in the women’s race are a pair of top-20 teams in No. 15 Minnesota Duluth and No. 18 U-Mary, which finished runner-up and fifth at Griak, respectively. Former National Athlete of the Week Jennifer Agnew will be among those taking on Falch for the title.

On the men’s side, the Vikings made quick work of the Maroon II field at the Griak, winning with 54 points and nearly doubling runner-up UW-La Crosse. Two-time defending NSIC champ Paul Yak and Adam Braun finished second and third overall in that race, and turned in similarly strong performances against Arkansas at the Chile Pepper Festival.

No. 24 Sioux Falls is the top-ranked challenger to Augustana.
