Former Olympian Gail Devers bringing message of hard work, hope to area student-athletes
SPRINGFIELD – While many Olympic athletes get their start on high school athletic fields, Gail Devers began her training by pounding the pavement in National City, Calif., where she grew up. With rival gangs lining the streets of the San Diego suburb between her junior high school and her home, the future five-time Olympian three-time gold medalist would sprint home to stay out of trouble.
