USTFCCCA Service Awards Presented at Convention Opening Session

January 11, 2013

NEW ORLEANS – Two in the coaching profession were honored for their long service and dedication to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) at the opening session of the Association’s annual convention on Tuesday at the JW Marriot Grande Lakes in Orlando, Fla. Former Tennessee State coach Ed Temple and was honored with the George Dales Award while Minnesota women’s head cross country coach Gary Wilson was presented with the Jimmy Carnes Distinguished Service Award.

George Dales Award - Ed Temple

Ed Temple, a former coach and professor at Tennessee State for more than 40 years, was presented with the George Dales Award.

The George Dales Award is named in honor of longtime Western Michigan coach George Dales for his relentless pursuit in the growth and development of track and field and cross country over more than half a century. This award is presented annually by the USTFCCCA to a distinguished individual who, through their efforts, has enhanced the profession of coaching track and field and cross country.

Temple never allowed racial barriers to block his pursuit of excellence in the track & field coaching profession, and as a result has helped to create opportunities for today’s African-American coaches. His successes as an athletics coach are among the best in the history of the sport, coaching 34 national team titles and fostering 40 Olympians, 23 Olympic medalists and 13 Olympic gold medalists. His impact as a positive educational role model was perhaps even greater, graduating 90 percent of his student athletes.

He was inducted into the USTFCCCA Hall of Fame in 1996. In addition to coaching at Tennessee State, he coached the U.S. Women’s Olympic Team in 1960 and 1964, and was an assistant on the 1980 team.

The USTFCCCA’s Jimmy Carnes Distinguished Service Award is presented to individuals who have gone above and beyond the call of duty in their service to the Association and to the sports of Cross Country and Track and Field.

As an advocate of the track & field and cross country community, he served as an officer for the Women’s Intercollegiate Cross Country Coaches Association – a predecessor to the USTFCCCA Division I Cross Country Executive Committee – for six years, including as president from 1993 to 1995. In that capacity he spearheaded the movement to expand the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships. He has also served on the USTFCCCA Board of Directors.

Wilson will retire in the summer of 2013 following 28 years of coaching the Golden Gophers, and 45 years of coaching overall.
