Ray Stewart Sets Cal School Record in 60 Hurdles Junior Blazes to Time of 7.77 Seconds at Husky Indoor Classic

Feb. 12, 2011

SEATTLE, Wash. - Racing for the first time as a Golden Bear, junior Ray Stewart set a school record in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 7.77 seconds en route to a runner-up finish on the second day of the Husky Indoor Classic.

Stewart, a junior who came to Cal after two years at Merritt College in Oakland, broke the three-year-old Golden Bear standard of 7.89 seconds set by Thomas Mack at the 2008 MPSF Championships, also held in Seattle.

On Saturday, Ronald Brookins of Sac State edged Stewart at the wire to win in 7.75, just 0.02 seconds in front. Stewart actually broke Mack's Cal mark twice on the day, as he ran 7.83 in the morning heats for the fastest time among qualifiers.

Stewart enrolled at Cal this year from Merritt, where he was a two-time California JC champion in the 110 high hurdles. His PR in the outdoor event is 13.72 seconds, a time he ran twice as a freshman at the Mt. SAC and Jim Bush invitationals.

A pair of Golden Bear women matched Stewart with second-place showings at the Husky Classic. Cherrelle Garrett claimed runner-up honors in both the 60 (7.55) and 200 (24.55) meters, with her 200 time a season best. Freshman Charnell Price was third behind Garrett in the 60 at 7.58.

In the 400, Angelica Weaver set a PR with a time of 55.96 in taking second. Freshman Ashley Cooke was next in third place, timed in 55.99.

Sophomore Chad Jones had a strong day with lifetime bests in two events. He was the top Cal finisher in the long jump, going 23-1.75 on his final attempt, to place seventh, He also took seventh in the triple jump with a 48-10.00 effort. Hammed Suleman was fifth in the TJ at 50-0.75 despite passing on his three attempts in the finals. He still surpassed 50 feet in a meet for the third time this season.

Emani Truluck continued her improvement in the women's 60 hurdles by finishing fourth in a PR 8.48 seconds.

In the women's pole vault, Allison Stokke placed fourth at 13-3.75. After clearing her opening height of 12-4 on her first try, she needed three attempts on the next two heights to advance before ending her day in fourth. Theresa Raub was eighth in the event after tying her PR at 12-10.

Former Golden Bear Ed Wright, competing unattached, captured the high jump at 7-1.50. Brian Carmichael was the top Cal finisher, taking 12th at 6-7.50.

The Bears will take next weekend off before returning to Seattle for the MPSF Championships Feb. 25-26.
