ALLMAN NAMED NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR

Stanford discus thrower earns Pac-12 honors

STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford freshman discus thrower Valarie Allman was named Pac-12 Newcomer/Freshman of the Year for women’s track and field, the conference announced Tuesday.

Allman placed second at the Pac-12 Championships and went on to qualify for the NCAA Championships after placing second at the NCAA West Prelims.

In her first collegiate meet, Allman threw 187-7 to shatter a Stanford freshman record that stood for 28 years, and jump to No. 3 on Stanford’s all-time list. Allman was consistent and finished the season as one of two freshmen to qualify for the NCAA Championships, where she finished 21st.

Allman’s 187-7, her lifetime best, ranks No. 16 this year among all U.S. throwers, collegians and professionals. She has qualified for the U.S. senior championships June 26-29 in Sacramento, Calif., and also is seeking a spot on the national team for the IAAF World Junior Championships in Eugene, Ore., on July 22-27.

Allman, who was a co-valedictorian at Silver Creek High School in Longmont, Colo., and anticipates a career coordinating community outreach programs, was the 2013 national high school leader with a best of 184-2. It ranked as the sixth-longest throw in national high school history and broke the Colorado state record by 19 feet, 3 inches.
