SEATTLE – The California Golden Bears men’s team claimed their first MPSF team Championship since the 1992-93 season on Saturday in Seattle, while the women tied for seventh. This came following a very impressive day one on Friday that saw the Bears capture three individual titles (men’s and women’s long jump and women’s weight throw). On Saturday, senior Jordan Locklear won the men’s mile run championship earlier in the day with a time of 4:04.03, setting the pace for a historical finish at the MPSF Indoor Track & Field Championships for the Bears at Dempsey Indoor Facility.

"The staff and I are so impressed with the competitiveness that the team displayed throughout both days,” Director of track & field Tony Sandoval said on Saturday. “We were truly inspired. Everyone brought their "A" game to the MPSF Championships.”

Cal’s men won the team competition with 96 points, edging Arizona State by three and claiming their first team title in the MPSF Championships since the 1992-93 season. The Cal women finished tied for seventh with 38 points, improving on last season’s performance, in which they placed eighth.

“The turning point for us was Locklear's upset victory in the mile,” Sandoval added. “It symbolized that anything is possible. Everyone was closely watching the scoring after that. The drama in the mile relay was classic as Jordan anchored the team to seventh place and gave us a two-point cushion in the event."

Locklear started California off on the right foot on Saturday, winning the mile with a time of 4:04.03 from the first heat. He then went on to anchor the 4x400 relay and grab two massive points for the team with a seventh place finish.

Ristic, a transfer from UNC Asheville, who broke the Serbian indoor record in the 60-meter hurdles yesterday in the prelims with a new PR mark of 7.69, finished second in today’s final with a time of 7.74. He finished just behind defending champion Jonathan Cabral from Oregon, who tied former California Bear Ray Stewart’s MPSF Championship meet record of 7.68.

Blocker and Oliver continued their momentum from their incredible preliminary heats yesterday, which saw Blocker set a new school record in the event. In the finals, each runner was one hundredth of a second off of their pace from a day ago, with Blocker finishing second with a mark of 6.72 and Oliver placing fourth with a time of 6.81. The tandem brought home a key 13 points for the team in the process.

Sophomore Grace Beaudoin equaled her PR of 5-8.00 (1.73m) that she set two weeks ago at the Don Kirby Elite Invitational in Albuquerque and tied for a second place finish on Saturday behind Oregon junior Chancey Summers, who cleared a mark of 5-10.00 (1.78m).

Sophomore Randy Bermea (49.37) and junior Joost de Jong (49.48) each posted new PR’s in the 400-meter dash on Saturday, finishing 17th and 20th, respectively.

The Golden Bears will open their 2014 outdoor season next week at home at Edwards Stadium in the California Outdoor Opener.
