A graduate of Cornell University, Class of 1953, he was inducted into the Cornell Athletic Hall of Fame in 1991. In 1953 he set an indoor world record for 300 yards that stood for 17 years. In retirement he enjoyed his ranch in Clayton and horseback riding on Mount Diablo. His passion for history led him to travel extensively throughout Europe. The most important thing in his life was his children Craig Lingel (Robin) of Danville, Tom Lingel of Fairfield, and Nancy Robertson (Randy) of Danville as well as 8 grandchildren that he loved dearly. In addition he is survived by his two sisters Helene Lou Bly (Doug) of Rockville, MD and Elizabeth Ann Kasting (John) of Rock Hill, SC. He also leaves behind a multitude of loving nieces and nephews.
Nothing made him happier than to share a good meal with some great wine, under his Oak tree and enjoy a spirited exchange of ideas with his friends and family. In his final years he enjoyed a close relationship with his dear friend Ms. Marcella Sleep of Felton, CA. Over the years he maintained lifelong relationships with his Cornell Track and Field teammates as well as several close friends that he traveled with over the years.
