Flanagan Sets American Record, True Repeats at USA 15K Championships
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Saturday, March 15, 2014) -
Shalane Flanagan took off on a rec ord-setting pace early, while defending champion Ben True ran stride for stride with USA Cross Country champion Chris Derrick, Saturday morning at the USA 15K Championships, hosted by the Gate River Run in Jacksonville, Fla.

The USA 15K Championships are the third stop on the
USA Running Circuit, which concludes this fall with the
.US National Road Racing Championships. The top ten finishers at each race on the circuit qualify to compete in the .US National Road Racing Championships.

A first mile of 4:52 gave Flanagan (above, courtesy USATF) an astonishing 13 second lead over fellow Olympian
Janet Bawcom, a lead she would never relinquish. Flanagan set the pace, cruising mile after mile, nearly all of them between 4:59-5:04. Through the first 5k split, Flanagan hit 15:29, only a second off world record pace and well under American record pace.

Mutai, Kipyego Victorious at NYC Half

NEW YORK (Sunday, March 16, 2014) - What had shaped up as a potential preview of next month's Virgin London Marathon ended less than halfway through the race and turned into a solo time trial triumph for Geoffrey Mutai at the ninth running of the NYC Half on Sunday, March 16. The Kenyan, who has won the previous two editions (2011 and 2013) of the New York City Marathon, showed he's a master of the Big Apple streets at half the distance as well, as he threw together a string of miles in the 4:30 range to outdistance a stellar field on a chilly (31F) and somewhat breezy morning in Manhattan.

Britain's Mo Farah, the double World and Olympic champion at 5,000 and 10,000 meters, who will face Mutai when he makes his marathon debut in London on
April 13, never really got a
chance to test himself against the Kenyan, tripping and falling hard during the sixth mile of the race, as the lead pack of eight men raced down the same hill in Central Park that Mutai (right, courtesy NYRR) has ascended in the opposite direction in both his marathon victories. Farah quickly sprang back up and gave chase - "It's just something that happens in running, no big deal," he said. "I knew I had to try to make up the gap gradually, but it was hard."

Kemei, Zeiger Win 42nd Yuengling Shamrock Marathon
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Runners from all 50 sta tes and several foreign countries traveled to Virginia Beach, Virginia for the 42nd edition of the Yuengling Shamrock Marathon weekend for a variety of reasons including a reprieve from one of the harshest winters on record.

With five events, there was a distance for everyone to choose from: the Yuengling Shamrock Marathon, Anthem Shamrock Half Marathon, TowneBank Shamrock 8K, Operation Smile Shamrock Final Mile or the Leprechaun Dash.

Cooler than normal temperatures in the mid-40s and gusty winds coming off the Atlantic Ocean did not deter
Kennedy Kemei (right), 35, a Kenyan who now lives in Chapel Hill, N.C. He led a field of 2,782 marathon finishers and raised his hand with a number one to the cheering crowds on the famous finish by the looming 34-foot statue of King Neptune. His winning time was 2 hours, 18 minutes, 24 seconds.

"There was no one to help pace," said Kemei who ran most of the race by himself. When asked about the weather conditions he shook his head, "The wind was very, very tough." While Kemei did not reach his goal time, he was pleased for his girlfriend, Susan Jerotich, who won the Anthem Shamrock Half Marathon.

Runners Celebrate Rite of Spring at Rock 'n' Roll USA Marathon
WASHINGTON, D.C. (Saturday, March 16, 2014) - After months of winter weather, the 2014 Rock 'n' Roll US A Marathon & CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon officially kicked off spring on a beautiful Saturday morning in the nation's capital. More than 25,000 entrants from all 50 states and 33 countries gathered on Constitution Avenue for a running tour full of historical landmarks and diverse neighborhoods.

Running in his debut marathon, 23-year-old
Adam Doherty of Charlottesville, Va., won the 26.2-mile main event with a time of 2 hours, 33 minutes and 53 seconds. While Doherty ran unchallenged by any other males, the eventual women's champion, Nuta Olaru, took the lead at 5K and maintained first position through 11 miles.

"I didn't realize she was running the marathon until I passed her and saw her bib. She ran well and held her own, she was definitely rocking and rolling out there," said Doherty, who recently graduated from Dartmouth College where he ran track and cross country. "It feels great to win, you can't ask for much more than that. I came in expecting to run around 2:35 and I got under that too, so success on every front today."
