BERKELEY – The California Golden Bears finished their week at the Hornet Invitational on the campus of Sacramento State University on Saturday. Seven Golden Bears took home individual titles, while the men’s 4x100-meter relay team also came out on top. Freshman Khalfani Muhammad showed a lot of improvement today across several events, including the 100-meters, 200-meters, setting PR’s in both and ran the first leg of the 4x100-meter relay team who won with a time of 40.51. Cal’s throwers had a nice day, as redshirt senior Derek White took home the hammer and discus titles, setting a new PR in the hammer with a throw of 210-9 (64.24m). Redshirt junior Scott Esparza was second to White in the hammer, coming up just short of his personal best (206-3, set in 2012 in Austin, Texas) with a throw of 203-9 (62.11m). Additionally, sophomore Grace Beaudoin equaled her PR, clearing a height of 5-8.75 (1.75m) on her way to the event title.

"It was a quiet day for us considering we held out a number of athletes with the next two weeks on the horizon as we are competing at the Texas Relays, the tri-meet in Virginia and the Stanford Invitational,” Director of track & field Tony Sandoval said on Saturday afternoon. “We've had to get in some good training for most of them since MPSF’s. We had a number of redshirts from indoor compete that performed well today. Newcomers Kiare Tanner won the triple jump and Brenden Song was runner up to Derek White with a PR in the discus.”

Muhammad continues to improve in both the 100-meters with a mark of 10.60, as well as the 200-meters with a time of 21.57. Additionally, his first leg of the 4x100-meters helped the team to the win, and an incredible time of 40.51. Redshirt senior Tom Blocker was right behind his teammate Muhammad, with a time of 10.66. Blocker also impressed in the 200-meters, clocking a time of 21.57.

Also on the track on Saturday was sophomore Leland Later, who won the 1500-meters with a big kick, setting a new PR with a time of 3:50.85. The 800-meters came down to a photo finish between a pair of Bears teammates, as freshman Ivan Gonzalez came away on top with a season-best 1:52.04, topping teammate Josh Lewis, who PR’ed with a mark of 1:52.15. Redshirt senior Simon Schmidt also won the 3000-meter steeplechase unopposed, with a time of 9:13.82 in his first steeple in two seasons.

Beaudoin nearly set a new PR, just missing a clearance of 5-11.00, but equaled her all-time best by clearing a height of 5-8.75 (1.75m) in her event win on Saturday.

Cal’s throwers were very successful in the state capital on Saturday, as White smashed his PR in the hammer with a throw of 210-9 (64.24m), surpassing his previous best of 192-4 set in 2012. Song, a freshman from Santee, Calif., set a new PR in the discus, finishing just behind White, with a mark of 174-2 (53.10m).

The Bears will be in action next week, sending a large contingent to the Texas Relays in Austin from Wednesday, March 26 through Saturday, March 29.
