NEW ORLEANS – The women’s track & field teams at the University of Arkansas and Stanford University were named as Scholar Teams of the Year in Division I for the 2012 seasons by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The squads earned the distinction as a result of being the highest-placing teams with at least a 3.00-cumulative GPA at the most recent NCAA indoor and outdoor championship, respectively. In addition, the USTFCCCA announced 171 teams as All-Academic teams for the track & field seasons.

Indoor Track & Field Scholar Team of the Year – Arkansas

Arkansas tied for fifth place at the NCAA Indoor Championships and holds a cumulative team GPA of 3.18. Tina Sutej won the NCA crown in the pole vault and Region George placed second in the 400 meters.

Sutej was among the 12 Razorbacks that earned All-Academic honors earlier in the week, joining Martine Borge, Tara Diebold, Kaitlin Flattman, Kristen Gillespie, Kristen Hesseltine, Grace Heymsfield, Shannon Klenke, Danielle Nowell, Dominique Scott, Rachel Werner, and Keri Wood.

Outdoor Track & Field Scholar Team of the Year – Stanford

The Cardinal placed sixth at the NCAA Outdoor Championships as a team with 25 points. The squad carded a cumulative team GPA of 3.26 through the 2012 spring semester.

Stanford boasted 11 individuals on the All-Academic list: Emilie Amaro, Mary Kate Anselmini, Aisling Cuffe, Justine Fedronic, Arantxa King, Kathy Kroeger, Jordan Merback, Joy O’Hare, Kellie Schueler, Katerina Stefanidi, and Alyssa Wisdom.

At the outdoor championships, Stefanidi won the NCAA title in the pole vault, tying a meet record 4.45/14-7¼. Kroeger placed seventh in the 5000 meters.

All-Academic Status Earned by 171 Teams

In addition to the Scholar Teams of the Year, the USTFCCCA also announced the women’s 2011 Division I All-Academic Track & Field Teams. A total of 171 institutions earned the distinction as a result of a cumulative team GPA of 3.00 or better.

Duke reported the top cumulative team GPA among Division I women’s programs through the spring 2012 semester with a 3.58 tally. Wofford (3.53) and Weber State (3.52) followed at top-three programs.

Among all conferences, the Big East led them all with 12 teams named as All-Academic. The MAC and Big Ten follow with nine.
