Collegians at the 2013 Millrose Games
February 15, 2013
Feb. 16 | 1 p.m. ET | New Balance Track & Field Center – New York, N.Y. | LIVE on ESPN3.com
NEW ORLEANS – Though collegiate track & field fans may not see their favorite teams in action in this pre-conference championships weekend, they will still have the opportunity to watch some of the top collegians in the country compete at the center of this weekend’s track & field universe at the Millrose Games in New York City.
The Armory will host a meet brimming with world-caliber talent – 39 Olympians are expected to compete as of publication – while collegians will look to either break onto or cement their position in the international scene.
Below are previews of each of the collegians competing at the Millrose Games and the type of competition they will be up against. All personal bests listed are from indoor competition and were compiled with IAAF.org data.
WANAMAKER MILE
Individually, nearly half of the 15 collegians competing in the elite fields will compete in the Wanamaker Mile. Arizona’s collegiate 3000 meters leader Lawi Lalang, NC State’s Ryan Hill and Tulsa’s Chris O’Hare will be part of a field including Olympians Matthew Centrowitz and Lopez Lamong that will be chasing the Wanamaker Mile record of 3:52.87. Bowerman Watch Lister Lalang has the fastest mile PR of the collegians at 3:55.09, and this will be his first mile of the season. O’Hare has gone sub-4:00 on four occasions, including a personal-best 3:56.48 in 2011, but will be in a mile race for the first time this season. Hill – also running his first mile of 2013 – went 3:58.33 last season at the Virginia Tech Elite.

Olympic steeplechaser Emma Coburn of Colorado, Dartmouth’s Abbey D’Agostino – the collegiate leader at both the mile and 3000 meters – and Oregon standout Jordan Hasay will test their mettle against Canadian Olympians Sheila Reid and Hilary Stellingwerff, in addition to prep phenom Mary Cain. Hasay has yet to debut in the mile in 2013, an event in which she holds a 4:33.01 PR, while Bowerman Watch Lister D’Agostino ran a career-best 4:34.15 in the mile earlier this season. Coburn, who has a 4:36.08 mile PR from a year ago, will be in action for the first time this season.

JOHN THOMAS WOMEN’S HIGH JUMP
As a 2012 Olympic silver medalist in the high jump and a 2012 finalist for The Bowerman, Brigetta Barrett of Arizona is the most accomplished jumper in the Millrose field. With a 2013-best clearance of 6-3¼ (1.91m) in her lone meet of the season at Arkansas’ Razorback Invitational, Barrett currently leads NCAA Division I in a tie with South Carolina’s Jeannelle Scheper. Though the 2013 Bowerman Watch Lister cleared 6-8 (2.03m) at the Olympics for her silver medal, her best indoors is 6-5¼ (1.97m), set at last season’s Razorback Invitational. Her lone 2013 final mark is equal to or better than the indoor career-bests of all but two of the competitors in the field – Liz Patterson jumped 6-4¾ (1.95m), while Becky Christensen has a career-best of 6-3¼ (1.91m).

NYH&RD 60 METERS
Both the men’s and women’s New York Health & Racquet Club 60 meters races will feature a collegian. The women’s race will feature Oregon’s English Gardner, the defending NCAA champion at both 60 meters indoors and 100 meters outdoors. A member of the 2013 Bowerman Watch List, Gardner has run in just one meet this season, and the Millrose Games will serve as her season debut in the 60. Expect a quick time in her season-opener with three 2012 Olympians in the field – and perhaps a photo finish with Jeneba Tarmoh in the race.

Colorado’s Joe Morris will be the lone collegiate representative in the men’s 60 race. His 6.57 at the Air Force All-Comers meet (converted to a 6.61 due to altitude for qualifying standards) was good for the DI lead until last weekend when he lost the top spot to Marvin Bracy of Florida State. In the field with Morris are four Olympians from 2012 in Doc Patton (USA), Jeremy Bascom (Guyana) and Gerald Phiri (Zambia), along with 2012 Paralympic 100 meters silver medalist Richard Browne.

AT&T WOMEN’S 400 METERS
After a breakout year in 2012 that saw her qualify for the London Olympics in the 400 hurdles, 2013 Bowerman Watchlister Georgann Moline of Arizona is waiting patiently for the outdoor season – and her signature 400 hurdles event – to get underway. In the meantime, Moline is working on building upon the speed that carried her to London in the hurdles. She has already set an all-conditions career best in the open 400 at 52.27 – good for third in DI – and is .65 seconds faster than her outdoor personal best from last season. She could be pushed below that mark and into the collegiate lead in a fast field with 400 meters London Olympian Francena McCorory.

BYRON DYCE COLLEGE MEN’S 4×800 RELAY
Inaugural USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week Casimir Loxsom and the Penn State Nittany Lions have not only a win in their sights, but also a shot at a world record. Loxsom opened his season with a 1:46.98 – the top-ranked collegiate time of the season and No. 6 in the world – while Brannon Kidder is No. 6 among collegians at 1:48.17, Ricky West is 15th at 1:48.92, and Za’Von Watkins is right behind at 16 in 1:49.03. Add it all up and you have a theoretical 7:13.10 on paper – almost a second faster than the 2000 world record of 7:13.94 by Global Athletics & Marketing. The scariest part? Kidder and Watkins are both freshmen. If the stars align properly there may be a new world record in the event by night’s end.
WOMEN’S LONG JUMP
Academy of Art Senior Vashti Thomas will compete in the long jump, an event she currently leads at the Division II level at 20-5¾ (6.24m) by nearly a foot. With that mark she also ranks ninth among all collegians. Her career-best indoors is 21-3 (6.47m) set while she was with Texas A&M prior to transferring to Academy of Art.
