AUSTIN, Texas – The first medal of the 2015 IAAF World Championships won by Team USA was claimed by a Texas Longhorn. Michelle Carter took bronze in the shot put on the opening day of the games to register her first outdoor world championship medal.
Carter posted a throw of 19.76 meters (64-10.00) on her second attempt in the final to finish in third place. She had a strong and consistent series of throws with marks of 19.45, 19.48 and 19.71 meters as well. During the qualification round she tallied an automatic qualifying mark of 19.22 meters on her first and only needed attempt.
The bronze medal performance solidifies an impressive 2015 season for Carter. She won her third consecutive and sixth overall USATF outdoor title in June and also stands second in the IAAF Diamond League "Diamond Race" for the women's shot put with one more meet to go in the competition in Zurich on September 3.
Four other former Longhorns and one future Longhorn are still to compete at the IAAF World Championships. Marielle Hall will run the prelims of the 5,000 meters on Wednesday and Leo Manzano opens the 1,500 meters the same day. Trey Hardee starts the decathlon on Thursday and Sanya Richards-Ross is in the pool of runners for Team USA in the 4x400 meter relay. Incoming juco transfer Chrisann Gordon is in Jamaica's relay pool for the 4x4 as well.
The world championships are airing on Universal Sports and NBC. The networks will provide live, tape-delayed and re-aired coverage. The IAAF also is providing a live stream via YouTube. Visit the IAAF's website for more information and links.
