USC finished in the top five of seven events and Robert Ford and Ricky Morgan bettered school records on the final day of the McCravy Memorial track meet in Lexington, Ky. today (Jan. 24). During the two days of action in Kentucky, the Trojans posted 14 top five finishes.
The freshman Ford for the second consecutive week bettered the USC men's 800m record, setting the new standard at 1:50.46, more than two seconds faster than last week. Ford finished second in his heat and eighth overall. Taking 10th overall was senior Myles Andrews with a time of 1:50.80. That time was a PR of over three seconds for Andrews. Freshmen David Manahan and Jordon Wallin ran in their first races as Trojans, with Manahan finishing 32nd with a time of 1:55.04 and Wallin finishing 36 with a time of 1:55.85.
Junior Reika Kijima was the only Trojan entered in the women's 800m race and she took 19th with a PR of 2:13.52. That time was nearly nine seconds better than her previous best running for APU last season.
The freshman Morgan also set the USC men's indoor 400m record with a time of 47.14. He knocked a half-second off his first 400m race as a Trojan and finished second in the second heat and sixth overall.
In the women's 400m race, sophomore Amalie Iuel ran 53.98 to win her heat and place sixth overall. Her time was a PR by nearly 2.5 seconds. Junior Jaide Stepter won her heat and was seventh overall with a time of 54.04 and senior Vanessa Jones won her heat and placed 12th overall with a time of 54.48. Freshman Kendall Ellis had a season-best time of 54.63 to finish 15th and senior Akawkaw Ndipagbor, in her season debut, placed 26th with a time of 55.81.
Senior Melia Cox got things started for the Trojans by placing seventh in the women's triple jump. She won the first flight with a leap of 41-1.75 (12.54m), but did not improve upon that mark in the finals.
Cox showed plenty of improvement in the 60m hurdles races, by matching her old PR in the preliminary rounds with a time of 8.34, then setting a new PR of 8.30 in the finals to finish fourth. Freshman Dior Hall made her debut today and didn't disappoint, running 8.31 to win her prelim heat and then running 8.26 to finish third overall.
In the men's 60m hurdles, freshman Marquis Morris had a season-best time of 8.11 to place 13th and senior Allen Williams had a time of 8.22 to place 14th. The top nine hurdlers advanced to the finals.
USC had six women finish in the top 15 of the 60m dash, led by junior Alexis Faulknor who set a PR of 7.27 in the finals to place fourth. Freshman Ky Westbrook took fifth in the finals with a time of 7.29, after running 7.28 in the prelims. Redshirt junior Tynia Gaither placed 10th with a time of 7.45, freshman Deanna Hill 12th with a time of 7.48, sophomore Destinee Brown 13th with a time of 7.50 and freshman Gabriella Cantrell 15th, also with a time of 7.50.
Junior Andre De Grasse set a PR of 6.61 in the men's 60m dash finals to place fourth. Senior BeeJay Lee ran 6.71 in the finals to take eighth. Both runners won their prelim heats, De Grasse with a time of 6.67 and Lee with a time of 6.69.
The final events of the meet for the Trojans was the 4x400m races. The women's team of Stepter, Iuel, Ellis and Jones placed fifth with a time of 3:36.26. The men's team of Morgan, Ford, Andrews and Davonte Stewart placed fourth with a time of 3:11.05.
