STANFORD IMPRESSIVE IN
TRACK VICTORIES
Tonn, relay, shine at Razorback
Invitational
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Jessica Tonn won the
3,000-meter invitational race and her teammates captured the women’s 4x400 relay
– both among the top times in school history – to highlight Stanford
performances Saturday at the Razorback Invitational indoor track and field
meet.
Tonn, a fifth-year senior from Paradise Valley, Arizona,
led wire to wire, running 9:04.93 to jump to No. 5 on Stanford’s all-time indoor
list, passing former Cardinal greats Sara Bei and Kathy Kroeger.
Tonn has opened her season with two substantial personal
records, first with a 4:38.00 mile at the UW Indoor Preview, and now this one.
Her previous best was 9:10.26. Tonn’s specialty is long distance, winning the
Pac-12 10,000 title and finishing ninth in the USATF outdoor 5,000 last
year.
Just as impressive was the Stanford 4x400. The team of
junior Kristyn Williams and three freshmen – in order: Olivia Baker, Michaela
Crunkleton Wilson, and Gaby Gayles – ran 3:36.81 for the No. 3 indoor time in
Stanford history.
Williams (53.92 split) gave Stanford a substantial lead on
the opening leg and Baker (53.33) kept the Cardinal in the lead with only LSU
close, The Tigers took the lead on the third leg despite a 55.06 leg by
Crunkleton Wilson, but Gayles (54.92) lifted the Cardinal to victory on the
anchor.
Particularly impressive was that Stanford beat Texas
A&M, which ran three members of its NCAA outdoor runner-up team of a year
ago. The Aggies were awarded second after apparent runner-up LSU was
disqualified.
