- No. 1 Gators Put Thrilling Finish On Remarkable Day at the Rod McCravy
LEXINGTON, Ky. -- A pair of world and NCAA leading 4x4 relay marks capped off a remarkable afternoon of competition for the No. 1 Gators on the final day of the Rod McCravy Memorial Invitational at Nutter Field House in Lexington.
Robin Reynolds, Destinee Gause, Kyra Jefferson and Claudia Francis crushed the University of Florida indoor 4x4 record in a NCAA and world-leading 3:29.58, notching the 12th-fastest all-conditions indoor time and just the 14th sub-3:30 mark in collegiate history in the process. The quartet’s performance was a preview for the men’s race, as Najee Glass, Hugh Graham, Jr., Nick Uruburu and Gino Hall followed in suit with a 3:04.22 NCAA and world-leading performance themselves in the night cap.
While the relays provided the final excitement of the evening at Nutter Field House, a staggering 20+ personal-best performances for University of Florida athletes highlighted the second and final day of competition at the Rod McCravy Memorial, including an event win for senior jumper Marquis Dendy (16.06m/52-8.25) in the triple jump, followed by a runner up finish from freshman KeAndre Bates (15.85m/52-0), and domination in the women’s 800m from Francis (2:06.96) before her anchor leg in the 4x4.
Eight performances from Saturday’s action edited the Florida all-time top-10 record book, including a personal-best throw unleashed by men’s senior Stipe Zunic in the shot put (19.97m/65-6.25) for second all-time at UF in the event. Senior jumper Ciarra Brewer PRed in the triple jump (13.77m/45-2.25) and sophomore Yanick Harthad the best 60-meter hurdles performance of his Florida career (7.83) as the duo solidified Rod McCravy runner-up finishes. NCAA outdoor national runner-up in the 800m, Ryan Schnulle, started the indoor season off right with a third-place finish Saturday in 1:48.78.
The Gators will look to carry the momentum into the Razorback Invitational Jan. 30-31 in Fayetteville.
HEARING OUT HOLLOWAY
“I am extremely proud of the group today. I talked to them after the meet and I told them I am especially proud of them because of the level of competition we faced at this meet; we didn’t come in and try to do too much, we didn’t come in intimidated. We came in, held our heads high and got it done.
When you think of the number of PRs and collegiate leaders or top-five performances we had, our group did a wonderful job of coming in and going to work. Our entire freshmen crew -- KeAndre (Bates), Lloydricia (Cameron), Darrielle (McQueen), Jhonny (Victor), and everyone else in the freshmen class did a phenomenal job of sticking their nose in at a meet where 15 of the top 30 programs in the country were competing, and then on top of that, they all PRed this weekend. It would have been really easy to be intimidated, but it tells you two things: one, they trust their coaches, and two, the future of the program is in very good hands.
Big shout out to Claudia (Francis) for her hard work this week in the DMR, the 800m and anchoring the 4x4, she did a phenomenal job.
So proud of our 4x4 relays, too. For the women to come in and get a school record in the first meet of the season was big, and I’m really proud of the men’s 4x4 for going out there and holding off an extremely tough LSU team. I am just so proud of this group right now.”
