Senior District Judge D. Lowell Jensen Honored

On Thursday, June 25, judges from all three court divisions gathered to view Judge Jensen's portrait, newly hung in Courtroom 1 in the Oakland Courthouse on the same wall as that of Senior District Judge Saundra Brown Armstrong. At the gathering, the judges surprised Judge Jensen with the dedication of the Oakland attorney lounge in his name.

Judge Jensen's life and career reflect a long association with, and deeps roots in, the East Bay. He earned his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of California at Berkeley and spent more than 25 years as a prosecutor for Alameda County, including a lengthy period of service as District Attorney from 1969-81. After that, he served in the United States Department of Justice from 1981 until 1986, the year in which President Ronald Reagan nominated him to the seat vacated by William H. Orrick, Jr. on the United States District Court for the Northern District of California. He was confirmed by the Senate and received his commission soon after his nomination. Judge Jensen served as an active district judge until 1997; since 1997, he has served as a senior district judge of the court. For the bulk of his time as a senior judge, Judge Jensen presided over criminal cases in the Oakland Division. In 2012, Judge Jensen transferred to the San Jose Division, where he currently presides over criminal matters.
