MIRANDA MYERS (ST. FRANCIS, SACRAMENTO) COMMITS TO NORTHERN ARIZONA

Distance Standout Myers Commits to Northern Arizona

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior cross country and distance standout Miranda Myers has committed to run at Northern Arizona next fall.

“I am really excited,” said Myers, who will sign officially on Wednesday. “I just got back from an official visit over the weekend. I am really pumped. The team was really nice and the weather is perfect. They have a really good education program. It is going to be a great atmosphere and environment to train in for my running.”

Northern Arizona is located in Flagstaff, Ariz., and sits at an elevation of 7,000 feet, providing beneficial altitude training for distance runners. The Lumberjacks are coached by Director of Track and Field and cross country Eric Heins and assistant Leah Rosenfeld, who works with the women’s team. NAU recently won the Big Sky Conference women’s cross country title and swept both the indoor and outdoor team championships in track and field last spring.

“The coaches were really inviting with their attitude and desire for me to succeed at NAU,” said Myers. “The people in the program want you to compete well and they have the resources there to help.”

Myers is a four-time all-league selection, while helping the St. Francis cross country team to three top 10 CIF state championships, including a second-place finish in 2012, two Sac-Joaquin Section titles and three league titles. She finished 13th overall in a time of 17:52 at the state meet in 2013, the third-fastest junior in the field. On the track, she has helped the Troubadours win back-to-back section titles and three league championships.

“It is a dream come true to run in college,” said Myers. “To be on a scholarship and know that a school like NAU wants you for running makes me really happy. I am excited to go there.”

Myers and her cross country teammates have an important meet this weekend with the Sac-Joaquin Section championships.

“The team goal is to stay positive and relax,” said Myers. “Individually, I want to go out and do my best, stay with the top group and stay strong throughout the whole race.”

St. Francis will be competing for a spot in the state championships.

“We have put in a lot of hard work and it would be really nice to finish out the season with my teammates at the state meet,” said Myers.

Cross Country Head Coach John DuCray is excited for Myers.

“She has been running for the varsity team since her freshman year and she has progressively got faster each year,” said DuCray. “She will do a great job in college.”

Meyers will be one of nine Troubadour seniors participating in a NLI/College Commitment event at St. Francis on Nov. 12 at 9 a.m. The signing event will be broadcast on the TroubieTV Network online. Family, friend and fans can watch the event for free by registering on the PlayOn! Sports NFHS Network.

Editor Keith Conning: Flagstaff Campus[edit]
Perched at 6,950 feet (2,120 m) above sea level, the highest college campus in the country, the main campus is surrounded by the largest contiguous ponderosa pine forest on the North American continent[11] and enjoys a four-season climate. Snow is common in winter, with accumulations most prevalent in January, February and March. Winter skiing is accessible at Arizona Snowbowl, an alpine ski resort located on the San Francisco Peaks, 7 miles (11 km) northwest of Flagstaff.

Miranda Myers is the daughter of Mason Myers, who was an outstanding distance runner at Vacaville High School from 1983 to 1987. Mason placed second in the 1986 Kinney (now FootLocker) West Regional at Woodward Park in Fresno in 15:00.0 and fifth in the 1986 Kinney National Championships in San Diego in 15:08.7.

"Marc Davis (San Diego, CA) edged away from a very strong group to a dominating 14:38.1 win, very close to the Course Record set the previous year, with his over ten second margin of victory over Todd Williams (Monroe, Mich) giving the locals a chance to celebrate with their local prep hero mightily over the last mile! Marc went on to a fine career at the University of Arizona, with Williams the University of Tennessee, with both eventual Olympic level runners of note. Robert Kennedy of North Westerville, Ohio, another future great as he went on to the University of Indiana and Olympic level, was third at 15:05.3, with Paul Vandegrift (Archbishop Kennedy, Gwynedd Valley, Pa) fourth at 15:08.1, and Mason Myers (Vacaville, Ca) 5th at 15:08.7." by Doug Speck
