Senior Brighie Leach (Campolindo, Moraga), sixth at the Stanford Invitational 5k in 17:46, set a new course record of 17:27.2 (5:49 per mile). The old record of 17:30 was set by Carrie Verdon (Campolindo) in 2012. Verdon (Colorado) placed fourth in the 2013 NCAA DI Mountain Region 6k in 20:39.3.
Steve Leach, the father of Brighie Leach, told me that she is going to Princeton University. Steve, his wife, and my oldest son James, 48, all majored in Geography at UC Davis. My son graduated in 1989 and was a member of the UC Davis marching band.
"I just started going as fast as I possible could," said Leach to Phil Jensen (BAY AREA NEWS GROUP). "I wasn't expecting this to happen."
