WASHINGTON - All-American Katrina Coogan (Exeter, N.H./Phillips Exeter Academy) won the individual race and led five Hoyas among the top six en route to the 2014 BIG EAST Cross Country Championship, held at Northview Church in Carmel, Ind. The Georgetown women won with a commanding score of 19 points, eclipsing the 10-team field. The men's squad finished second with 51 points behind BIG EAST rival Villanova in the field of nine.
Coogan led a quintet of Hoyas among the top six with a time of 20:31.0 over the 6,000-meter course. Haley Pierce (Wilmington, Del./Tatnall School) finished third, timing in at 20:52.7, followed by Samantha Nadel (Glen Head, N.Y./North Shore) in fourth (20:56.5). This was Nadel's first race of the 2014 season.

Track All-American Andrea Keklak (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury/Princeton) was the fourth point-scorer for the Blue & Gray with a time of 20:58.4 (fifth place) followed by All-American Hannah Neczypor (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton) in sixth place (20:59.0).

"When you get to see these women behind the scenes and see how much work they put in - it's really gratifying to see an end result like this," Women's Head Cross Country Coach Michael Smith said. "I'm thrilled for Katrina for the individual win as well. She and I know that it has been years in the making to reach a place of confidence and fitness so she can perform to her capabilities."

Coogan becomes the first individual champion in Georgetown history since 2007 when All-American Melissa Grelli claimed the title.

"I just stayed as relaxed as I could," Coogan said of the race. "The biggest difference from last year to this year is that with each race, I'm taking a step forward and I'm learning more each time we go out.

"I'm really happy for the team - the BIG EAST is a really tough conference and to bring home the team title is a great accomplishment. We are running for each other and we want to make huge statements as a team."

The Hoyas won the conference championship with a dominating 19 points followed by Providence (65), Butler (82), No. 24 Villanova (95), Marquette (131), Xavier (198), Creighton (203), DePaul (253), St. John's (271).

This is the second championship in three years for the Hoya women, tabbed No. 2 in the country by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), and the fifth title overall in program history. Georgetown's 19 points is the lowest team score since 1990 (Villanova, 15 points) and ties for the second-lowest team score in meet history. With a 49-point margin of victory, Georgetown eclipses the previous record of 44 points set in 2009 by Villanova (VU-30, WVU-74).

The men's team, ranked No. 16 in the last regular season poll released by USTFCCCA, took second place with 51 points behind No. 7 Villanova (23). The 17th-ranked Providence Friars finished third with 64 points followed by Butler (108), Creighton (176), Marquette (185), Xavier (198), DePaul (210) and Seton Hall (286).

Georgetown executed another solid meet with pack running as the strategy with Jonathan Green (Berlin, Mass./Saint John's High School) finishing fifth, with a time of 23:52.7 over the 8,000-meter course. Darren Fahy (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon) timed in at 23:55.8 (7th), followed by Scott Carpenter (Lenox, Mass./Lenox Memorial) in 10th (24:03.3), All-American Ahmed Bile (Annandale, Va./Annandale) in 14th (24:22.3) and Ryan Gil (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) in 15th (24:24.3) as the final point scorer.

The Hoyas continue the postseason on Friday, November 14 at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional, held in State College, Pa.
