MONTICELLO EMPIRE LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP

I lived in Vacaville from December 1999 to January 2014, so that my wife could fulfill her dream of operating a House Church for the United Church of Christ. I announced both cross country and track meets for Vacaville High School, the Yolo County Cross Country Championships in a vineyard near the town of Yolo, the Woody Wilson Classic, the Sacramento Meet of Champions, the Sac-Joaquin Section, and the Golden West Invitational during my time in Vacaville. Kay Nekota, who is the coach at Vacaville High, invited be to announce the Lagoon Valley Classic on September 6, 2014.

The MEL was the first cross country title of any kind for the Armijo Indians of Fairfield since the varsity girls team won in 1976.

"The school has never won two titles in the same year," head coach Dave Monk said to Mike Miller of the Vacaville Reporter. "It was just a lot of hard work. We have high-quality kids with character. They're like a family. They really came together."

"At the Southwest Conference Indoor Championship on February 20, 1996 Baylor took the lead when senior David Monk from Fairfield, Calif. won the 3000-meters.

Before the race, coach Clyde Hart made it clear to Monk that his win was what they needed to come out ahead.

'I said 'David, we've got to have it. If you think I'm putting pressure on you, I am,' ' Hart said in an article in the Dallas Morning News.

His pressure worked. Monk took the lead at the one-mile mark and set the pace for the rest of the competition.

'Coach Hart was very blunt,' Monk told the Waco Tribune-Herald. 'That was a lot of pressure. It changed my tactics. I set the pace. I was going to do whatever it took to take the lead. I wanted to push it and run those Texas guys out of the race.'"
