Hammed Suleman took second in both the long jump and triple jump in Albuquerque

Jan. 21, 2012

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Angelica Weaver won her second event in two days - taking the 400 meters in a PR 55.23 - and Golden Bears finished in the runner-up position in three others events on the final day of the season-opening Cherry & Silver Invitational Saturday.

Weaver's previous best in the indoor 400m was 55.89 at last year's MPSF Championships. She won her flight Saturday and held onto first after Kaymarie Jones of Adams State was timed in 55.26 in a later race. On Friday night, Weaver captured the 600 meters in 1:34.28.

In the men's triple jump, Hammed Suleman placed second - he was the top collegian - with a best of 50-11.00 that he achieved on his sixth attempt. Josh Como of CVE, who won 2011 NCAA Division II outdoor triple jump title for Cal State LA, took first at 51-11.75. Freshman Jonte Grant was fifth in his first meet at Cal with his effort of 49-5.00, which topped his high school PR of 48-11.25.

Freshman Sydney Gray was the runner-up in the women's 800 meters in 2:16.28, and junior Taylor Dutch took second in the women's mile in 5:03.24.

Tom Blocker was 10th in the men's 400 meters, but did set an indoor PR with his time of 49.00.

Others to place among the top five included Sebastian Sam in the men's 800 meters (1:55.81) and Aziza Baker in the women's triple jump (40-2.75).

In Friday's late action, Suleman set an indoor PR in the long jump, finishing second with a mark of 24-6.50 and a quarter inch ahead of his previous best. Kristin Rimbach and Gianna Fernandez tied for third in the high jump at 5-6, while freshman Evan Barr cleared 15-1.75 in the pole vault.
