Demps commits to track and field
University of Florida standout sprinter and football player Jeff Demps made his intentions public Thursday to pursue track and field permanently in hopes of qualifying for the 2012 Olympic Games. The decision not to enter the NFL draft comes less than two weeks after the senior running back played his final game for the Gators.
One of the premier young sprinters in the country, Demps will compete in his senior indoor and outdoor seasons for the Gators. In three seasons, he is already a four-time NCAA champion with Florida. Those national titles include the 2010 NCAA Indoor 60m championship and the Outdoor 100m championship. He is also a five-time NCAA All-American and a five-time SEC champion. Demps placed fifth in the 100m at the 2011 USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Demps ended his football career January 2 when Florida defeated Ohio State 24-17 to win the Gator Bowl. He will make a return to indoor competition in February with Florida.
Jackson, James, Cantwell commit to Indoor Grand Prix
2005 World Outdoor 400m hurdles champion Bershawn Jackson along with reigning World Outdoor 400m champion Kirani James will both take part in the 400m at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix February 4 in Boston. Reigning World Indoor champion Christian Cantwell will be on hand to compete in the shot put.
One of the top names in American hurdling, Jackson won both the Diamond League championship and the Visa Outdoor championship in 2010. It was the same year he won a World Indoor Championships gold medal in the 4x400m along with owning the top 400m hurdles time and the third fastest indoor 400m time in the world.
Competing for Grenada, James burst onto the scene last summer with his gold medal in Daegu, South Korea, and finished the year ranked No. 1 in the world in the event by Track & Field News. At just 19 years of age, his indoor personal best of 44.80 in 2011 makes James the third fastest man ever indoors.
Cantwell is a three-time World Indoor Championships gold medalist, the 2009 World Outdoor Championships gold medalist and won a silver medal at the 2008 Olympic Games. Only three men in history have thrown farther indoors then Cantwell’s personal best of 22.18m/72-9.25.
