Matador Women Eighth, Men 15th at Indoor-Opening Great Dane Classic

NEW YORK, NY - The Cal State Northridge men's and women's track & field teams opened the 2012 indoor season Friday at the Great Dane Classic at the Armory Track & Field Center.

The women, led by senior Jackie Harrison [Junior 5-6 Union City, Calif. (James Logan HS)] and junior Tiana Webberley [Sophomore 5-4 Palmdale, Calif. (Highland HS)], scored 38 points to finish eighth among 23 teams. The men's squad finished with 16 points to take 15th-place among the 23 teams competing.

Webberley set a personal indoor-best after clearing a top height of 12-9.5 (3.90) to earn 10 of CSUN's 38 points. She came within .09 of the Northridge indoor pole vault record of 13-1 (3.99) set by Krystal Quinn in 2008. The Matadors also got a seventh-place finish from sophomore Jenna Yowell (11-9.75) and a 13th-place finish from Jenna Hulion (11-3.75).

Harrison led the Matadors on the track by winning the 400 meters in an indoor lifetime-best 54.89. Harrison's time betters her previous best (55.46) and ranks third in Northridge indoor history. Senior Preciuos Watkins added six points to Harrison's 10 points by finishing third in the 400 in a career-best time of 55.30.

Also on the track, sophomore Briana Davis finished seventh in the 60 meter final in a time of 7.97 while Watkins clocked a team-best 7.63 in the prelims while freshman Leshel Vines ran 7.91 and freshman Tiffain Reneau clocked a time of 8.10. In her prelim heat, Davis ran 7.86 to finish second.

A trio of Matadors ran the 200 meters with Davis finishing 32nd in 25.91, Reneau finishing 41st in 26.15 and Vines finishing 45th in 26.51.

Also in the field events, senior Ese Ntekume picked up six points with a third-place finish in the triple jump, posting a lifetime-best 40-1.25 (12.22) which is the fifth-best mark in Matador indoor history. Ntekume also finished seventh (3 pts.) in the long jump after jumping 18-9 (5.71) which shattered her previous best of 17-5.25 (5.31).
