EUGENE, Ore. -- (Jan. 17, 2012) - The University of Oregon recognized its seven most recent national Academic All-Americans in a ceremony Wednesday at the John E. Jaqua Academic Center. Six of the honors came during the 2010-11 academic year, an all-time high for the University, while football's Carson York made it seven Academic All-Americans in the last 18 months for the Ducks.
The seven scholar-athletes recognized were: Jack Dukeminier, men's golf; Jordan Hasay (Mission College Preparatory Catholic High School, San Luis Obispo 2009; Oregon 2013), women's track & field/cross country; Anne Kesselring, women's track & field/cross country; David Klech (California HS, San Ramon 2006; UCLA 2007; Oregon 2011), men's track & field; Katherine Fischer, volleyball; Amanda Johnson, women's basketball; and York.
The name of each of Oregon's previous Academic All-Americans is now etched on the wood surface on the first floor of the Jaqua Center. In total, 55 UO student-athletes have been named as recipients of 84 national Academic All-America awards.
Jack Dukeminier graduated Summa Cum Laude in 2010 in three years with a degree in Economics and minor in Business Administration with a 4.03 GPA. He was named to the Dean's list seven out of nine terms as an undergraduate student. He is pursuing a master's degree in General Business and will graduate in spring 2012. He was the 2011 Pac-10 Conference Men's Gold Scholar-Athlete of the Year, three-time Pac-10 All-Academic first team, and became the first men's golfer in UO history to earn Academic All-America honors. He was also the recipient of the 2010 NCAA Elite 88 award for men's golf at the NCAA Championships in Chattanooga, Tenn., recognizing the student-athlete with the highest GPA among the 156 competitors.
Jordan Hasay is the 2011 Capitol One Academic All-America of the Year award recipient for women's track & field/cross country. She is the first sophomore ever to be named as the national Capitol One Academic All-America of the year in any NCAA sport. She is the third UO student-athlete to be named Academic All-American athlete of the year (Bill Musgrove and Galen Rupp are previous UO recipients of the honor.) She has been on the Dean's list three of seven terms with 4.02 GPA in Business Administration. She is also a distinguished scholar nominee. On the track, Hasay is a two-time NCAA champion (indoor mile, 3,000 meters) and is an 11-time All-American.
Anne Kesselring, a student-athlete in track & field and cross country, is a 2011 second team Academic All-American and a Pac-10 All-Academic Scholar Athlete. She has been on the Dean's list all seven terms of her university education at the UO with a 4.07 GPA in Business Administration. She is also a distinguished scholar nominee. On the track, Kesselring was the 2011 NCAA champion at 800 meters and is a six-time All-American.
David Klech graduated Magna Cum Laude in Winter 2010 with a degree in Psychology and a minor in Business Administration with a 3.88 GPA. He graduated with a master's in Psychology Research in Winter 2011 with a 3.96 GPA while completing a fifth year of athletic eligibility as a member of the men's track & field team. He is a three-time Pac-10 All-Academic first team member. On the track, Klech is a two-time All-American in the combined events.
Katherine Fischer is a junior working toward her undergraduate degree in Accounting with a 4.01 GPA. She was a 2011 First-team Academic All-American, an All-Pac-12 All-Academic team member, and an Academic All-District honoree for volleyball. She was the second UO student-athlete to ever receive first-time All-American volleyball honors, and was one of two players on the six-person squad that sported at least a 4.0 GPA. She is a member of Beta Alpha Psi and the Oregon Mortar Board Honor Society. Fischer was a starter at outside hitter for the Duck volleyball team that defeated a pair of No. 1-ranked teams in 2011 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
Amanda Johnson graduated Summa Cum Laude in 2010 in just two years with degrees in both Sociology and Psychology. She is pursuing her master's degree in Couples and Family Therapy and will finish at the end of her fourth year at UO. She is a two-time Academic All-American, two-time Academic All-District, candidate for Lowe's Senior Class Award, and two-time Pac-12 Academic First Team.
Carson York graduated in 2011 with a degree in Journalism and Communications. He was named the Journalism and Communications Male Graduate of the Year in 2011, as well as Advertising Graduate of the Year. He is currently a student in Journalism's Community and Society's Master's Program and is a member of the football team. He was named to the 2011 Second-Team Academic All-American, 2010 and 2011 Academic All-District VIII Team, and 2010 and 2011 Pac-12/10 Academic First-team selection. York is a three-year starter at offensive guard for the football team that has won three straight conference titles and the 2012 Rose Bowl.
