Jan. 27, 2012

SEATTLE, Wash. - Sophomore Idarre Coles set three personal bests in his four events Friday and now stands in third place in the heptathlon after the opening day of competition at the UW Invitational. The meet continues through Saturday when a full squad of Golden Bears will be on the track.

Coles began the day with a PR effort in the 60 meters when he was clocked in 7.24 seconds - the third-best time among the field of competitors. He also set a lifetime best in the shot put with a mark of 36-7.00, which was more than a foot further than he threw in Albuquerque last weekend. Coles closed out Friday by tying for first in the high jump at 6-6.25, another PR.

Overall, Coles has 2,818 points, trailing only Chris Randolph (Sketcher) with 3,022 points and Corbin Duer, competing unattached, with 2,926 points.

A total of 10 other Bears saw action Friday night. In the men's 200 meters, freshman Jonathan Berry-Smith led the Cal contingent and won his flight and finished 11th overall with a time of 22.77. The mark of 0.35 seconds faster than his performance at the Cherry & Silver Invitational last week.

Elisa Karhu finished 10th in the women's 5000 meters in 17:21.06, five seconds faster than her best outdoor performance last year.

In the men's 5K, Simon Schmidt (14:29.56) took seventh and Matt Miller (14:33.95) placed ninth to give Cal a pair of runners in the top 10. Two former Golden Bears were near the top of the leader board with Bolota Asmerom second (13:51.81) and Yosef Ghebray third (13:55.89).

The meet resumes Saturday morning with the completion of the heptathlon and a host of events that will be run throughout the day.
