Macias, Kenney Win 21st Tri-City Medical Center Carlsbad Marathon
Sisay, Lagat claim half-marathon titles; more than 8,400 participate in sold-out event
By Patrice Malloy

CARLSBAD, Calif. - (January 22, 2012) - Mario Macias of Alamosa, Colo. and Christine Kenney of New York City claimed victories at the 21st Tri-City Medical Center Carlsbad Marathon held Sunday morning in Carlsbad under mostly cloudy skies with temperatures ranging from the upper 40s to upper 50s.

Macias, 30, claimed a decisive wire-to-wire win in 2 hours, 22 minutes, 24 seconds. It was his first Tri-City Medical Center Carlsbad Marathon appearance.

"I mainly used the race as a workout," said Macias, a Mexican citizen. "I am used to running alone, but it is nice to have someone to push you. The cheers from the crowds helped a lot."

Macias finished more than two minutes ahead of runner-up Jae Yung Hyung, 40, of Korea (2:25:03) and Jacques Sallberg, 37, of Pasadena, Calif. rounded out the podium finishing third in 2:29:11.

In the women's division, Kenney, 33, also enjoyed a wire-to-wire victory, finishing in 2:53:07. "I love Carlsbad and would love to live here someday," said Kenney who has a sister who lives in Carlsbad.

Sarah Hallas (Ursuline HS; Chico State), 32, of Petaluma, Calif. finished second in 2:57:49, while Julie Brekke, 38, of La Jolla, Calif. took third (3:02:38).

In the half-marathon race, Africans took top honors with Ezkyas Sisay, 23, of Ethiopia winning the men's race in 1:04:43 and Kenyan Everlyne Lagat, 31, claiming the woman's crown, clocking a 1:12:44.

Sisay grabbed an early commanding lead, only to have the chase pack of Meshack Kirwa (KEN), Teklu Deneke (ETH) and Joseph Gray (Newcastle, Wash.) catch up to him just past the 4-mile mark.

"My goal was to maintain a pace fast enough for a 1:02 finish, but nobody would go with me," said Sisay, who placed 9th in last November's New York City Marathon. I knew I had enough speed to finish strong though and win."

Kirwa took second in 1:05:10 and Deneke was third (1:05:16).

In the women's race, Lagat and Jane Kibii, the three-time defending race champion, ran together for the first 8 miles before Lagat pulled away for her first Carlsbad victory.
"I knew Jane has won three times and I knew she was very good," said Lagat. "I knew I needed to break away."

Kibii, who according to her manager, Brad Poore, has been ill recently, finished second in 1:15:18, while Heather Jackson, a Carlsbad-based triathlete, finished third (1:16:11).
Overall, 8,468 runners and walkers from 46 states and 12 foreign countries participated in the 2012 Tri-City Medical Center Carlsbad Marathon & Half Marathon.

The scenic 26.2 and 13.1 mile races started and finished at the Westfield Plaza Camino Real in Carlsbad and treated runners and walkers to tours of the Buena Vista Lagoon, the Village of Carlsbad and the Pacific coastline before returning home to the finish line. Twenty-seven musical bands entertained the thousands of participants, volunteers and spectators along the course throughout the morning.

The event enlisted the help of more than 2,000 volunteers and benefited 22 official charities. Both the marathon and the half-marathon sold out months in advance.

ING Miami Marathon Expects $45-Plus Million Economic Impact in 2012
10th edition approaching 25,000 entrants for all races

MIAMI - (January 17, 2012) - As the ING Miami Marathon and Half-Marathon® continues to grow, with race entries approaching 25,000 in 2012, the economic impact that the race has on the South Florida economy continues to surge along with it.
The event, set for Sunday, January 29, is expected to generate more than $45 million for the local economy this year in the form of hotel bookings, restaurant spending, transportation, shopping and entertainment.

That milestone would exceed the $41.4 million that the event generated in 2011 according to a report prepared by the Sport Industry Research Center at Temple University. That total was 24% higher than in 2010, or an additional $8.04 million dollars in economic activity.

Event organizers also estimate that the 2012 economic impact will mean that the event is approaching a cumulative $200 million in economic impact as it celebrates its 10th edition, making it one of the top beneficiaries of the local community over the past decade.

"The ING Miami Marathon and Half Marathon are among our most popular signature events," says William D. Talbert III, CDME, President and CEO of the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau. "Over the past ten years, we have experienced the tremendous growth of this event with its thousands of participants from around the world enjoying our community and pumping money into our local economy. We're very proud and pleased to welcome the ING Miami Marathon and Half Marathon each year and look forward to the next ten years of its continued growth and success."

Specific economic benefits of hosting the 2011 ING Miami Marathon and Half Marathon for Miami-Dade County were:
• $24,853,030 of new money directly introduced into the county
• $7,164,550 of subsequent inter-industry spending within the county
• $9,391,201 of subsequent household spending within the county
• $15,173,318 increase in household incomes for county residents
• 431.8 new jobs created within the county.

The 2011 event had 21,147 registered runners from 79 countries and all 50 states. The report showed that 34,442 hotel room nights were generated by the race. Among non-local participants, the domestic market increased by 37% to 10,589 and the international market increased 35% to 3,210. International participants spend more in every spending category of lodging, food and beverage, transportation, retail shopping, tourist attractions and entertainment.

"The Miami Marathon has definitely earned its place as one of the top running events in the U.S. and now has become an internationally renowned event as evidenced by the increase in foreign registrations," said Dave Scott, General Manager for US Road Sports & Entertainment of Florida and Race Director for the ING Miami Marathon and Half-Marathon . "The increase in registrations from Latin America and the Caribbean is coupled with that from Europe. Our foreign participants are known for staying longer, which increases our hotel occupancies and related travel revenue, and they also embrace the great shopping and all that South Florida offers."

The ING Miami Marathon and Half Marathon is South Florida's largest running event. Visit www.INGmiamimarathon.com for more information.

The "New" Nationwide Children's Hospital Columbus Marathon & ½ Marathon Announced
Event celebrates community's giving spirit and honors patients of Nationwide Children's; 33rd edition on October 21 to also commemorate Columbus Bicentennial

COLUMBUS, Ohio - (January 18, 2012) - The Nationwide Insurance Columbus Marathon and Nationwide Insurance are making Nationwide Children's Hospital the title beneficiary of the annual running and walking event, renaming it the Nationwide Children's Hospital Columbus Marathon & ½ Marathon. The agreement is for three years and takes effect immediately. The goal of the partnership is to engage the community while gaining corporate and participant support of Nationwide Children's Hospital's non-profit mission.

Nationwide Insurance remains as one of the event's lead sponsors and will continue providing corporate support. Nationwide Insurance has been a key sponsor of the Marathon since the event's inception in 1980.

"We are excited about this transition as we continue our involvement with the newly named Nationwide Children's Hospital Columbus Marathon and 1/2 Marathon," said Chad Jester, Vice President, Corporate Citizenship, Nationwide Insurance. "The annual running and walking event has become nationally renowned and showcases tens of thousands of people who participate as athletes, volunteers and spectators. We see the engagement with the hospital as another great opportunity for the entire community to further support the life-saving work undertaken at Nationwide Children's Hospital."

Bill Burns, Chairman of the Nationwide Children's Hospital Columbus Marathon Board of Trustees, said the group is honored to be a part of this. "Adding Nationwide Children's Hospital as our title beneficiary significantly increases the positive impact our event has on the entire community," Burns said. "We could not ask for a better corporate partner than Nationwide Insurance, as they have stood with us since day one. The sky is the limit in terms of how this powerful collaboration will benefit the participants, volunteers and sponsors and the entire Columbus community, and of course, what it can mean for the hospital."

Steve Allen, M.D. and chief executive officer of Nationwide Children's Hospital, added, "We want to recognize Nationwide Insurance for once again coming forward to support both the Marathon and the hospital in their role as one of our community's most engaged corporate leaders. We also thank the Columbus Marathon for selecting Nationwide Children's Hospital as their title beneficiary. This event is already nationally recognized as America's best-organized marathon and is always one of the biggest events on the Columbus calendar. As the City celebrates its Bicentennial year, the hospital marks its 120th year of providing the best possible care to children regardless of a family's ability to pay. We can only do this thanks to tremendous community support and partnerships like the one we've announced today."

To kick-off the spirit of charitable giving, the Nationwide Children's Hospital Columbus Marathon is issuing a "call to commit" to this year's participants - the Nationwide Children's Hospital Columbus Marathon will match the first $100,000 in donations that are raised for the hospital by participants in the 2012 race. Fundraising participants are part of Children's Champions - a team of athletes who dedicate their race to the kids of Nationwide Children's. Hopes are that other corporate partners will provide similar matching opportunities to encourage fundraising efforts.

"We are honored to have such a favorable impact on our community, and this new relationship will help us do even more good work," said Darris Blackford, Nationwide Children's Hospital Columbus Marathon Race Director. "Running and walking can be good for your health, and can make a difference in the lives of others, too."

In addition, there are several new components that will pay tribute to and honor the millions of patients Nationwide Children's Hospital cares for annually. Each of the 26 miles, deemed the "Miracle Miles", will be dedicated to a "Patient Champion" - a current patient of Nationwide Children's. The community will have the opportunity to nominate a child as a Patient Champion (more information about nominating a child will be shared at a later date). Patient Champions will also be involved in other aspects of the event, from cheering participants on at the finish line, to presenting the marathon medals. Each Miracle Mile can be sponsored by a corporate or community organization in which the partners hope to have full engagement.

Today, the partners are also excited to announce the very first Patient Champion who will represent the inaugural Nationwide Insurance Miracle Mile - Alison Hile. Alison, 11, is the daughter of Doug and Jill Hile (Hilliard, OH) who are both associates at Nationwide Insurance. Alison has been a patient of Nationwide Children's since she was just days old when she was first diagnosed with cystic fibrosis. The Hile family leads an active lifestyle and loves to run which is actually very healthy for Alison's lungs and is an important part of her continued treatment as a patient living with cystic fibrosis.

The announcement of this partnership comes on the heels of a recent economic impact study conducted by Fisher Business Services at The Ohio State University that estimated the lifetime economic impact of the Nationwide Children's Hospital Columbus Marathon's 32?year history to be more than $154 million, including $13 million in 2011.

Additionally announced were several special Bicentennial activities to commemorate the City's Bicentennial. These include special recognitions honoring the city at the Race Expo, Start Line and Celebration Village; every 200th finisher will get a special award; hundreds of athletes will hold up large Bicentennial banners at the start line that will feature the 200Columbus logo, which will make for spectacular aerial photographs; all participants in the Children's Run will wear #200 on their runner bibs; and much more.

The Nationwide Children's Hospital Columbus Marathon has helped raise millions of dollars as a fundraising mechanism for many charities over its 32-year history, including the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Team in Training, the Hospice Foundation's Run to Remember, The Susan G. Komen For the Cure's Marathon for the Cure and the American Cancer Society's Team Determination. These and other charities will be encouraged to continue their fundraising efforts under the new agreement.

The 33rd Nationwide Children's Hospital Columbus Marathon & ½ Marathon will be held on Sunday, October 21, 2012 and will have the capacity of 7,000 full Marathoners and 11,000 1/2 Marathoners. Registration officially opens on Saturday, January 21. The Nationwide Children's Hospital Columbus Marathon is among the 20 largest marathons in the United States and is one of the top marathons to qualify runners for the Boston Marathon, according to Running USA. Everclear to Headline Finish Line Concert at Austin 10/20
Course and prize purse also unveiled for inaugural 10 mile road race; 10,000 entrant cap

AUSTIN, Texas - (January 18, 2012) - The Austin 10/20, the new Texas 10 mile running event sensation, has announced the signing of Everclear as the finish line concert band. They will be the feature act on the main stage and will go on at 10:45am race day April 15. The concert is free for all race participants, spectators and volunteers.

Formed in Portland Oregon in 1992, Everclear is well known for numerous radio hits such as "Wonderful" and "Father of Mine". Their songs have been featured in films American Pie and Scream 2. The Austin 10/20 is thrilled to have them take the main stage on April 15 to cap off the inaugural Austin 10/20.

Event Manager Shannon Madigan said, "Everclear has a great following in Austin and are well known nationally. They fit perfectly with our runner demographics and we're looking forward to a fantastic post-race concert."

Everclear will be playing at the finish line party after 10 miles and 20 stages (one every 1/2 mile) full of local Austin bands. The 10 mile course and band locations were recently unveiled and can be seen on the website at www.austin1020.com. The North Austin course starts and finishes at The Domain.

Race Director Peter Douglass said, "Our course is truly flat and fast which is unusual in Austin. Our participants should really enjoy it, especially with all the entertainment we have along the way!"

The race course has undergone full review from the City of Austin and has been conditionally approved. The City expressed concern about overcrowding and has put a cap of 10,000 on the participant number. Race entries have been coming in steadily and a sellout is expected.

The Austin 10/20 has also announced a significant cash prize purse for elite athletes in the male and female Open divisions with $23,000 in guaranteed prize money and another $20,000 in record bonuses are up for grabs. Texas residents get an additional 20% cash bonus if they finish in the money.

"The Austin 10/20 is going to be the most entertaining running event in America this year, but we're hoping that with our prize money and flat course, it's going to be one of the fastest as well," said Douglass. "We'll find out on April 15."
