BOSTON - Heading out on the road for the first time all season, the Dartmouth women's indoor track & field team faced some of its toughest competition Friday at Boston University's Terrier Invitational. The meet, held at BU's Track and Tennis Center, regularly features some of the region's top teams in a non-scoring format.
Like last week, sophomore Abbey D'Agostino (Topsfield, Mass.) won the mile race. And like last week, she did so in record time. Breaking the old mark of 4:41.89 set by five-time All-American Kristin Manwaring '96 by running a 4:38.44 last Saturday at home, the Dartmouth sophomore broke her own program record in the mile that had stood for just six days with another stellar showing Friday.
D'Agostino's time of 4:37.41 not only set the new Big Green women's standard in the event, but was good enough for first in a field of 116 other competitors in 12 total sections on this day. Her two times in the mile this season are all the more impressive because they are the two fastest in the NCAA this season.
Senior Alexi Pappas (Alameda, Calif.) did not join D'Agostino in the mile, but instead ran to a fourth-place showing in the 3000 meters. Pappas, who also ran a blazing time in the mile last week with what was then the third-fastest time in program history, posted a mark of 9:14.75 in Friday's 3000-meter race.
Pappas' time in the event set a new school record, eclipsing the old mark of 9:14.90 set by Maribel Sanchez '96. No other Dartmouth runner has run a sub-9:30 in the 3000 meters in the past 14 years.
Elizabeth Short (North Reading, Mass.) also ran in the 3000, finishing 27th in 10:02.84. She was joined by Ashley Ulrich and Claudia Pham (La Crescenta, Calif.), who were 32nd and 39th, respectively, in 10:07.15 and 10:22.66.
Dartmouth's two representatives in the pole vault were Marina Plesons (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Karla Verkouw (Lancaster, Pa.). Plesons led the way by clearing a height of 10-6.00/3.20m to finish tied for seventh. Verkouw was not far back, taking 10th with the same mark, but needing one more attempt to clear that height than Plesons, who did so on her first.
