SANTA ROSA -- Kelli Bercier traversed the soggy six-kilometer course at Spring Lake Regional Park in Santa Rosa in the same exact time she did so last year (23:34), but instead of placing 16th, she led the Sonoma State women's cross country team with a fifth-place finish as the Seawolves came in fourth place at the fourth annual Sonoma State Invitational on a rainy Saturday morning. Bercier finished 1:12 behind the women's race champion, Hannah Bell of Cal State Monterey Bay.
Cal State Monterey Bay took home the team title in the women's 6K race while UC Santa Cruz captured the title in the men's 8K race. Ben Garland of Cal State Monterey Bay won the men's event, crossing the line at 26:01.
Savannah Silacci placed 13th with a time of 23:59, followed by Veronica Kays (25:15) in 23rd, Abby Utic (25:23) in 26th, Debra Daubenspeck (25:38) in 28th, Brittany Smith (26:04) in 32nd, Raelynn Brett (26:15) in 34th and Hayley Sa (27:36) in 41st.
The Seawolves scored 89 points, finishing behind team champion Cal State Monterey Bay (30 points), runner up San Francisco State (37) and third-place UC Santa Cruz (82). Santa Rosa JC placed fifth with 119 and Dominican came in sixth with 177.
It is the first SSU Invitational title for the Cal State Monterey Bay women's squad after placing second in 2010 and 2011; the Otters did not compete in the event last year.
In the men's 8K race, CSUMB's Garland edged UC Santa Cruz's Tyler Hoyt (26:06) for first place by five seconds. Dominican's Justin Valdez (26:16) and Santa Rosa JC's Jaime Silva (26:28) and Cristian Nazarek (26:36) rounded out the top five men. Only three teams were eligible for team scoring -- champion UC Santa Cruz scored 32 points, followed by runner-up Cal State Monterey Bay (47) and third-place Santa Rosa JC (48).
Sonoma State will travel south next Saturday to compete in the Cal State San Bernardino Invitational.
