First Regular-Season Division III XC Regional Rankings Features New Top Teams

September 17, 2013

NEW ORLEANS – The portrait of the Division III cross country landscape painted in the preseason regional rankings is slowly beginning to become clearer and take shape after three weeks of competition, resulting in a handful of new No. 1 teams for a number of regions in the first U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) DIII Regional Rankings of the regular season, released Tuesday.

Four new men’s teams and two women’s squads have overtaken (or tied) the preseason favorites in the respective regions, highlighting a week of upheaval that also saw four other regions — between men and women — keep their No. 1 teams but establish a new No. 2 program.

In the men’s rankings, Centre made the biggest jump to No. 1, moving up to spots to the pinnacle of the South/Southeast Region, displacing preseason favorite Emory to No. 3.

Pomona-Pitzer took control of its region in a swap, exchanging with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps for the West’s top position. St. Olaf also swapped places with Central (Iowa) in the Central Region, edging out the Dutch by one vote, 138-137.

An even tighter race for No. 1 moved SUNY Cortland into the top spot of the Atlantic Region, as both Cortland and NYU garnered 129 points within the region to share the top spot.

In the women’s rankings, National Athlete of the Week Cassie Vince helped boost Calvin into the throne of the Great Lakes Region, dropping preseason favorite Oberlin to No. 2.

In the neighboring Midwest Region, Chicago moved into the top spot after UW-Eau Claire tumbled four spots to No. 5.

A trio of teams from other regions made the move up to No. 2 in preparation of being the next new No. 1 squad. St. Olaf (Central Region), Dickinson (Mideast) and Willamette (West) all climbed into the passenger seats of their respective regions.

NCAA Division III Regionals will be held Sunday, November 16. More information can be found at Regional Championships Central.
