2013 State of the Sport - Part IV: Largest Road Races
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - (September 22, 2013) - Each year,
Running USA releases rankings for the nation's top road races including such popular lists as the Top 100 U.S. Timed, Largest by Distance, Largest by State, Largest Festivals, Women-Only and Youth Runs as well as the World's Largest. These lists are cited by the media, used by the races and perused by running fans around the world.
Top 100 U.S. Timed - In 2012, the Top 100 U.S. Timed list accounted for more than 1.5 million finishers compared to 922,500 finishers in 2000 or an impressive 73% increase. In 2000 the 100th race on the U.S. list had more than 3,600 finishers and by 2012 that number had grown to more than 8,300 (a record high).
In 2003, half-marathons represented 17 of the races listed in the Top 100, and last year, the 13.1 mile distance accounted for an astonishing 43 races listed in the Top 100, with 15 from Competitor Group's popular Rock 'n' Roll Marathon Series. As mentioned in past State of the Sport Reports, since 2003, the half-marathon has been the fastest growing distance in the U.S., with women - 60% of fields now - driving its growth.

Willis, Simpson Triumph in NYRR Fifth Avenue Mile
NEW YORK CITY - For Nick Willis, it was a season marred by injury; for Jenny Simpson, it was another year on the medal stand. Both, however, walked away from their victories in the
NYRR Fifth Avenue Mile Presented by Nissan
on Sunday, Sept. 22 sorry to see it end.
Willis, 30, of New Zealand, became a two-time winner of the Fifth Avenue Mile when he crossed the line in 3 minutes, 52.1 secibds, followed by 2011 winner Bernard Lagat of the United States in 3:52.9. Willis had an easier time of it over Lagat than he did in 2008, when he edged the two-time Olympic medalist at 1500 meters by barely a step.
In the women's race, Simpson was comfortable all the way, leading from before the quarter-mile mark and breaking the tape in 4:19.3 for her second Fifth Avenue Mile victory in three years. It was the fourth-fastest women's time in race history.

Utah's Smyth Captures First XTERRA Title, Breaking King's Streak
OGDEN, Utah (September 2 2, 2013) - Patrick Smyth made quite the first impression on Snowbasin Resort and the XTERRA Trail Run National Championship.
Although he lives in Salt Lake City - about 40 miles away from Snowbasin - Smyth had never been to the picturesque trails at Snowbasin until Sunday. All he did in his first XTERRA Trail Run was win the overall National Championship.
"I've never actually been to Snowbasin, but always wanted to, so this was a good excuse to get up here and get on the trail system here," said Smyth, 27.
Lindsey Anderson, who made her first visit to Snowbasin last year and ran away with the title, successfully defended her women's XTERRA Trail Run National Championship. She is the second female runner to win back-to-back XTERRA National titles, following Lauren Fleshman (2009 and 2010).

Professional Headliners Announced for Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon
ST. PAUL, Minn. - Three naturalized American citizens and a local favorite will headline the fie lds for the 2013 USA Men's and Women's Marathon Championships held in conjunction with the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon on Sunday, Oct. 6.
Kenyan expatriates Shadrack Biwott (Eugene, Ore.) and Josphat Boit (Mammoth Lakes, Calif.), who have found success this year at shorter USA Championships distances, are favorites in the men's field that will race from downtown Minneapolis to the Minnesota State Capitol in St. Paul in the race recognized as "The Most Beautiful Urban Marathon in America®." The competition will mark the eighth time the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon has hosted the USA Men's Marathon Championship.
The USA Women's Championship, which is making its seventh visit to the event and eighth stop in the Twin Cities, features Romanian-born Adriana Nelson (Boulder, Colo.), the winner of the USA Half Marathon Championship in Duluth this June, and Team USA Minnesota's Meghan Peyton (Richfield), who was the surprise victor at the USA 20K Championship in New Haven, Conn. earlier this month.
Competitors in the USA Championships will be racing for $145,000 in prize money, including $25,000 for the winners and an additional $25,000 course record bonus should the men's champion break Phil Coppess's men's mark of 2 hours, 10 minutes, 5 seconds set in 1985 or the women's winner better the record shared by Zinaida Semenova (2001) and Irina Permitina (2004) at 2:26:51.
