Ortiz Wins Gold at World Mountain Running Championships


The 201 3 U.S. Mountain Running Team competed at the 29th World Mountain Running Championships on Sunday, September 8, in Krynica - Zdrój, Poland, with four individual top-ten performances, and no team finish below fifth place.



On a crisp, clear morning with temperatures in the low 50s for the start of the first race at 9:15, the U.S. junior women's team earned a silver medal led by the gold-medal individual performance of 18-year-old Mandy Ortiz of Eagle, Colo., racing in her first international event.


The senior women's squad included newcomer to the team
Magdalena Lewy-Boulet, 40. Lewy-Boulet, in just her second mountain race, led the team to fifth place among the 17 teams with her 11th place finish in a time of 44:56



The senior men's race was the final event. Temperatures had reached the mid 70s under bright, sunny skies. Of the 137 starters, eight did not finish including USA's Max King, the defending up/down champ from the 2011 World Championships, who rolled an ankle on the downhill section in the second loop of the three-loop 13.56-kilometer course.

New Balance Reach the Beach Relay Celebrates 15 Years Running


HOPKINTON, Mass. - The New Balance Reach the Beach Relay (RTB) will celebrate its 15th anniversary on Friday and Saturday, September 13-14. with new activities and more than 5,750 athletes running from Cannon Mountain in Franconia to Hampton Beach. Teams of 6 to 12 runners will rotate through 36 transition areas as they cover the 200 mile race. Runners rotate in a set order covering approximately 16.5 miles each over three run segments until the final runner "reaches the beach".


In 1999, 30 teams finished the inaugural event which started at Loon Mountain, including a team with Danvers resident Jack McManus, the sole athlete to have run in all 15 consecutive relays. McManus credits team camaraderie and amazing volunteers with bringing him back each year. "The fun, the laughs, creating memories with an incredible group of runners, and meeting runners from different parts of the country motivate us to return each year," McManus said. "The race is an incredible challenge."



This year's relay will begin on Friday, September 13 at Cannon Mountain in Franconia with 490 teams and runners coming from as far away as Europe, South America, and Asia to take part in RTB.

Allstate Life Insurance Atlanta 13.1 Marathon® Set for Sunday, October 6


ATLANTA - US Road Sports & Entertainment Group (USRS), owners and operators of the Miami Marathon, Publix Georgia Marathon, Salt Lake City Marathon, Palm Beaches Marathon, New Jersey Marathon and the Allstate Life Insurance 13.1 Marathon® Series, are making final preparations to host the Allstate Life InsuranceAtlanta 13.1 Marathon® and Hyundai Hope On Wheels 5K. The events will take place in Town Brookhaven, 4330 Peachtree Rd, NE, Atlanta, GA 30319 on Sunday, October 6, beginning at 7 a.m. ET.


The course encompasses Town Brookhaven in Atlanta's Brookhaven community, situated on Peachtree Road, north of Lenox Square Mall and Phipps Plaza, and borders the historic Oglethorpe University.



The event is family-oriented and includes a kid-friendly 5K course.

XTERRA Regional Champions Announced


The "regular season" of the XTERRA Trail Run circuit came to a close for the 2012-13 season last weekend. It was a season that featured more than 70 races across the country, with a record 16 regions hosting a series.


With the season complete, more than 220 runners can now claim to be an XTERRA Regional Champion for the 2012-13 season. They range in age from 9-year-old Jake Mackleer in the North Carolina Series,

to 76-year-olds Adrian Wolford in the Texas Series and
John Williams in the SoCal Series.

Reyes, Doerksen Win Inaugural Kelowna Wine Country Half Marathon

KELOWNA, British Columbia (September 7, 2013) -
Sergio Reyes, of Palmdale, Calif. and Kimberley Doerksen, of Gibsons, BC, won the inaugural
Kelowna Wine Country Half Marathon
, on Saturday, Sept. 7.


Produced by Destination Races, the event was the first in the Wine Country Half Marathon Series held outside of the United States. The 21.1-kilometer (13.1-mile) course began at The Vibrant Vine Winery, which offered spectacular views of Okanagan Lake, downtown Kelowna and the surrounding mountains. The course meandered past vineyards, farms, and apple orchards, before taking runners onto the Mission Creek Greenway. The final four miles of the course took runners along Okanagan Lake to the finish at Waterfront Park for the post-race Wine & Music Festival.



Reyes, who has now won five different Wine Country Half Marathons, completed the rolling, winding course in 1 hour, six minutes, 19 seconds, beating runner-up Richard Mosley of Coquitlam, BC (1:08:42) and Hans Aabye of West Kelowna (1:14:04).



Doerksen of Gibsons, BC, ran a time of 1:18:04, ahead of second place finisher of Jessica O'Connell, of Calgary, AB by 40 seconds and Kelowna's own Christy Lovig, (1:24:26).
