MIT Men Catapult to No. 5 in Newest Division III National Coaches Polls

NEW ORLEANS – The MIT men sent a big message with a team title against a trio of top-11 teams at the Southern Maine Invitational — a message that was received nationally as the Engineers made a monumental leap for the first time in program history into the top five of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division III National Coaches Polls released Wednesday.

Sitting near the bottom of the men’s poll at No. 28 just one week ago, MIT took down a trio of teams then ranked in the top 11 in Bowdoin (No. 5), Bates (No. 7) and Tufts (No. 11) by more than 50 points at USM to leap a whopping 23 spots into the No. 5 position in this week’s edition. The highest the Engineers had ever been ranked prior to this week was No. 7 during a two-poll stretch in 2011.

While the men’s top four of unanimous No. 1 North Central (Ill.), Haverford and UW-La Crosse tied at No. 2, and No. 4 Washington (Mo.) remained the same, MIT’s meteoric rise to No. 5 set off a long chain of changes throughout the rest of the rankings.

After finishing third in its 2013 debut at the USM meet, Bowdoin fell one spot to No. 6. A pair of teams each moved up two spots in No. 7 UW-Eau Claire and No. 8 Dickinson. Williams dropped one spot to No. 9, and St. Olaf rounds out the top 10 with a two-position increase from a week ago.

Falling out of the top 10 were No. 13 Calvin — down seven spots from last Wednesday — and No. 11 Bates, which tumbled four spots.

Little changed in the women’s top 10, with the top seven from last week remaining intact. No. 1 Johns Hopkins is still the unanimous No. 1 over No. 2 Wartburg, No. 3 MIT, No. 4 Williams and No. 5 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

Just behind No. 6 Chicago and No. 7 Calvin, Middlebury made the biggest move in this week’s top 10 with a two-spot improvement to No. 8. Trinity (Texas) and Oberlin were displaced to No. 9 and No. 10, respectively, as a result.

The USM Invitational also produced a big move in the women’s poll, as Tufts improved 11 spots from No. 29 to No. 18 this week.

New to the rankings on the men’s side is No. 29 Carleton, while the women’s poll saw two newcomers in No. 31 Marywood and No. 33 Whitworth, and two returners in No. 33 St. Benedict and No. 35 Kenyon. Marywood’s rank is the best in program history and just its second appearance in the poll dating back to a No. 34 rank in week one of 2011.

The 2013 NCAA Division III National Championships will be contested November 23 in Hanover, Ind.
