BERKELEY, Calif. – The California Golden Bears men captured the team title with a total of 152.50 points, while Virginia was second (143.50) and Michigan was third (100) in the annual triangular meet with the three preeminent public institutions on Saturday at Edwards Stadium in Berkeley, Calif. Cal’s women’s team finished third with 111 points, behind team winners Virginia (143) and Michigan (132). Individually, the Bears set 23 PR’s at an exciting meet under the California sun. Sophomore Khalfani Muhammad won the double for Cal in the 100-meters (10.44) and 200-meters (21.28). His 100-meter time was a new personal best and placed him in a tie for sixth on Cal’s All-Time Performers List. Junior Thomas Joyce also improved his standing on the All-Time Performers List, moving into ninth in the 3000-meters after his time of 8:06.98, which was a new PR. He also won the 1500-meters in 3:46.61. Junior jumper Jonte Grant also seized two important wins in the long jump (24-9.75) and triple jump (50-6.75) to help carry the men’s team to victory. Additionally, on the women’s side sophomore Kiare Tanner placed second in the long jump (18-0.50), which was a new PR and won the triple jump (39-1.00).
“There was a time in there where I thought we might lose the meet on the men’s side,” Director of track and field Tony Sandoval said on Saturday. “The 800 was a real switcher for us, then the 100, 400 hurdles got us on a roll and some other individuals stepped up for us to help get us the win. Thomas (Joyce), Eugene (Hamilton III) and Ellis (Newton) all played big parts today. The latter went 1-2 in the 800-meters, and then for us to also go 1-2 in the 1500 and win the 3000, those were some huge swing points for us.”
Muhammad set a new PR in his 100-meter win, posting a time of 10.44, placing him in a tie for sixth with Eddie Hart (1970) on Cal’s All-Time Performers List. Additionally, freshman Elizabeth Flatley ran the 3000-meter steeplechase in 11:30.12, placing her 10th on Cal’s All-Time List as well.
On the men’s side, PR’s were also set by freshman thrower Peter Simon in the hammer on Friday night (182-8) as well as in the shot put (57-10.25), freshman Jalen Doss in the 400-meters (49.01), Hamilton III (1:49.17) and Newton (1:49.67) in the 800-meters, where the Bears went 1-2, freshman Alex Wilde in the high jump (clearing a height of 6-2.75) and junior Andrew Scholnick in the javelin (177-3).
In addition to Tanner’s PR, the women were also keen to put forth their best, with multiple PR’s as well. Freshman Adrienne Hinkston set a new PR in the 400-meters (58.26), as did sophomore Nijae Jones in the 800-meters (2:11.64), sophomore Katherine Haysbert in the 1500-meters (4:36.05), freshman Morgan Robertson in the 100-meter hurdles (14.15), senior Arielle Stevenson in the 400-meter hurdles (1:04.41), sophomore Christine Canning and freshman Asia Chesley in the high jump (both clearing a height of 5-7.00), senior Rukayah Bent-Mikail in both the long jump (18-0.25) and triple jump (38-11.75), freshman Asha Culhane in the javelin (108-11), freshman Destiny Parker (on Friday night) in the hammer (153-2), as well as the shot put (47-11.25) and fellow freshman thrower Ginika Iwuchukwu in the discus (127-8).
The Golden Bears will be back in action next week, competing at the Big Meet on the campus of Bay Area rival, Stanford on Saturday, April 11. Both the Cal men and women won the Big Meet last year for the first time in 14 years and are looking to go back to back with sweeps for the first time since 1995 and 1996.
